Scratch DJ Session ★ 13 Female Turntablists 🎚️ Technics | SCRATCH LIKE A GIRL 2024 ★ Freestyle 1 // In this video I'm scratching with the ladies during 1 of 10 scratch sessions at our “Scratch Like A Girl Showcase 2024” as we rock on Technics 1200 turntables at The NAMM Show!
Formerly known as "Style & Grace" beginning in 2020, the newly re-branded SCRATCH LIKE A GIRL Showcase" is an empowered, improvised, all-female scratch DJ freestyle session that I host at the Technics/Stokyo NAMM show booth.
This 3rd iteration was the biggest one we've done yet, featuring 25 fierce, female turntablists rocking 10 round-robin, Q&A-style scratch sessions lasting 2 hours.
This first session I'm sharing with you features 13 dope female scratch DJs cuttin' it up to a funky fresh beat by The Funk Hunters (in order of appearance):

wow.. So It's early, like 5am and I happen to see your videos because I was looking for a review of the Rane hybrid decks. I'm born in Harlem raised on Technics .Numark, CM Labs, Rane, Vestax, etc. Now I skate professionally and spun records in the underground scene, so I always loved those who work the turntables GRAF, and the battles were in the park, then a few clubs here in NYC as HipHop DJs made their mark. By the time I heard of the X-ecutioners, I also saw you with your former partner on YT. I already knew some DJs, took some youth to battles, and then met Steve Dee at my house in person. It was you, DJ Rap, Coco Chanel, Joyce, Spinderella a few others. So today I am seeing your vision come to life, because when I asked folks why there's not way more ladies on the decks, I get a blank stare. It reminds me of why I do not encounter more ladies in the IT/music/open source community. I have to say that I was a bit blown away and there was a nice flow, clean techniques, and it was ON BEAT which I value as a DJ. To all you ladies, keep working, keep moving, and encourage each other. I'm a bit older yet DJing music, and skating saved my life. It kept me grounded, kept me busy, .kept me focused, kept me off the corners and from the wrong places, and was my safe space from what was going on at home sometimes. Without DJing I would have been in a dark place because I'm really apt to be direct and active with my thoughts/actions. Yes I have my 20k+ records still, my 1210s from overseas, my Rane mixer, Stantons/ Ortofons, my ASR10, MVC8080,Tracker, and I always shared what I knew, what I am blessed with, and believe me, someone is always watching your character, will take the second step with you once you take the first. Real folks show and prove ,not just talk, not just want to be seen. What you do is an art. It started here with us buying breaks, playing them in parks house parties ,and community rooms, then they started looping the breaks, then Steve Dee came with 'the funk', and turntablism was born. I played everything so I just spin all sorts of ways, and two of my three daughters loved me having records, so they are used to gear, cables, crates, instruments, etc. This is what we need to do as we learn and evolve, to share, to teach, and keep us doing more productive things with our time. I appreciate you Shortee, and I probably need to let my first grandaughter watch what you do too... From the Boogie Down Bronx, remember, you probably might never meet most of the people you inspire....
