Your one comment "Pick your landing spot first and not pick your club first." really hit home with me. Big time! For decades I've always picked my club first and try to make the club perform the way I want it to. Picking the landing spot first makes perfect sense for so many reasons and I'm embarrassed I never looked at chipping that way. I have an entirely new perspective on how to execute chip shots now and I can't wait to get to the chipping green and practice this new concept (new for me that is). Thank you!

The talking/TEACHING is necessary!!! Golf is 90% mental. Those of you who despise her teachings are likely making your game 90% physical, which is why you want to SEE her take shots so you can mimic her. Then when you screw shots on the course you’ll never know 1) WHY you screwed the shot or 2) How to fix it. Thank you Carolin for the talking/teaching!🫡

Great explanation. I usually bring an 8, pw, & sw to ‘around the green’ shots & make final club choice based on green read. Works out well. ( just get used to ‘takin ‘em w/ you!).

Very helpful tips, Carolin! Can’t wait to try at the chipping green. I couldn’t see the ball land/roll from the angle the camera was positioned. Perhaps an additional camera placed at the opposite end, could help your followers see the entire shot-from the strike to the ball coming to a stop by the pin.

Look up the Rule of Twelve and give it a try. The Rule of Twelve focuses on ALWAYS landing the ball about 3 feet on the green from the nearest edge always. There is a simple ratio that determines which club you use according to how far away you are from your landing spot which is just 3 feet on the green. Of course an uphill pin or downhill pin will have an effect, but with a little practice you will learn how to make the proper adjustment club joice wise. Love the video and atttempting each chip with the toe slightly down to prevent the heal from grabbing. That actually is my most frequent miss. Thanks and be well.

Great advice but one small comment. She states that the A wedge flies 66% and rolls the rest, and the 56 degree 50 %........I think the A Wedge should fly 33% and roll the rest. Of course I might well be wrong!!!

Great tips. Some prefer the lower, running 9-iron chip claiming a mishit is less bad than a mishit with a 56* wedge. I agree but also think the lower shot adds more complexity in that you now have to consider the green slope, contours and speed. Whichever shot you choose I advise practice.

I just putt all of those with my PW.....and i would expect to make a few get up and down most of the time and very rarely bogey it You can also close the face a little and the ball runs much further as you are slightly delofting and lowering the spin (it's how us old guys always did it in years gone by try it...works well) i would pretty much never go for loft unless there was something essential to carry over

Excellent lesson on a key part of this game. Drives me crazy if I get close to the green only to chunk the chip which for me leads to double bogey because I am so irritated. I am not a very good golfer but the lesson illustrates getting to the hole when you're so close is not rocket science but it does take some personal discipline and an understanding of the basics to execute correctly. Thank you Carolin.

Good reinforcement of risk management. I also use my 56 to fly the ball 1/2 way from 20 yards-and-in. I have to fly it closer to the pin outside of 20 yards (all by feel) because of more spin. Same for the A-wedge (my 48). I fly it 1/3 from 20 yards-and-in but again adjust landing spot by feel because of spin beyond 20 yards. From 60-50-40 yards out I use the exact same 1/2 swing for each distance using my 52-56-60 respectively and fly it nearly all the way to the pin with enough spin to check. If the greens are firm I'll adjust for rollout. Between 35 and 20 yards out it's all guesswork. My golf buddies bet against me getting up-and-down from that distance.

Seems to me that controlling how far the ball rolls once it's in the ground is more difficult than controlling the amount of flight. And since using differently lofted clubs require different arc in you backswing (for the same total distance), I find that flying it LONGER and running it as short as possible allows me to control the distance. Also, flying it all the way there avoids issues like green slope and grain

Some people are a little rude; please ignore them. I appreciated the explanations. Perhaps others are more advanced than I am and are therefore not needing explanations? I have had good luck with an 8 iron and putting stroke. I have not had great luck with higher lofted wedges on that tight a lie. My 56 has 12 degrees of bounce and my 50 has 11, and I’ve bladed some balls on very tight lies. I press forward on 46 degree pitching wedge with 8-9 degree bounce and even some on 8i. Pressing forward take more bounce out of play. If there is a fluffy lie, I consider the higher bounce clubs. Just not much margin for error in fat/thin on big-bounce wedges.

I used to experiment with ball golf to see if I had a short game at all by throwing balls down all around the practice putting green and would practice chipping balls onto the green. I never understood 'why" golfers would always practice chipping from the same exact spot all the time before they go play their round?? you would never chip from the same distance out on the course, so I always would practice chipping from different distances around the green to different hole locations.
@jsav5207
@jsav5207 Ай бұрын
Thanks helpful but given you said the 9 iron with the shortest flight is the least risky, why would anyone try the other clubs? I get if the lie is below the green you may want more loft to get up and so the 9 might not work but in this video I don't understand ? the shortest landing spot would always dictate a longer club

Nice clip, nice lesson but my issue here is distance accuracy. So all th clubs have pretty much the same back swing?
@dumbdumbfakefake4233
@dumbdumbfakefake4233 Ай бұрын
Yes to start with -- Solution to start with for distance control is get a metrenome (free online). Set up in the fringe, 3 feet off a flat green. Find your tempo that feels comfortable and REPEATABLE with just a 1 foot back swing. Then take each of your wedges and 9 iron and hit 5 balls each with that tempo and a 1 foot swing. Pace off and write down how far each club average traveled to land and then rolled out. This gives you a great, REPEATABLE starting reference. Pace off your shot, add or subtract a pace or 2 for uphill downhill and use the club that you know goes exactly that distance. I can tell you that my attack wedge at my tempo lands 3 paces and then rolls 7 paces and my 9 iron goes 16 total. These are my numbers. Start with this and you will develop feel for all the adjustments you'll add in the future. For instance, if I need 11 paces total I'll just add 1 inch to the backswing of my 10 pace attack wedge. Money!!!! Best of luck!
