/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Alright so the mid 90’s slasher scene was completely gutted inside out and upside down by the release of one specific movie… SCREAM babay. Wes Craven, Ghostface, a twist on the usual slasher genre, all of this was a unique mixture that captivated audiences, and somehow was able to get meta on an entirely different level, and is what has kept this franchise alive for almost 3 decades now. But why did Scream become the horror slasher darling it is today?
Well because it bullied those formulaic horror troupes from years prior, chewed them up, and spit them right in our faces, while establishing a world where these horror and slasher films live, and the characters are privy to the ins and outs of everything they watch. A whole new way to Scream. So join me, pick up the cordless, and let me know
Kicking things off, since Scream is like a reinvention, meta, slasher “the characters have ACTUALLY watched a horror movie or two before” type movie, there are plenty of horror references, nods, even blatant call outs. So I’ll try to touch on all of them when they pop up, but the main framework for a lot of Scream comes from 1978’s John Carpenter’s Halloween. Specifically a masked villain, high school victims, a lone surviving scream queen, and the slasher rules to live by, which we’ll talk about later.
We’re first introduced to Drew Barrymore’s Casey. She picks up the phone, and the TV behind her has the “blue dead screen” that used to show between inserting VHS tapes into a VCR. Director Wes Craven added this little detail to symbolize, quote “We’re about to see a film.” Casey continues talking to this stranger, saying her favorite scary movie is Halloween, ding ding, first horror movie drop. But she also pulls a knife from the butcher block while saying this, as a nod to the big ole’ knife Michael Meyers uses in the first Halloween.

Favorite detail was the callback to the use of Red Right Hand in almost every sequel regardless of if it was nondiegetic or not. Particularly since each Ghostface has some stupid vengeance motive that isn't really a motive so it seems apt to the theme of what the Red Right Hand stands for in literature. The vengeful killer for God... why does go need a killer, what can god ever get revenge on a person for when they are supposed to be all knowing and all seeing? It in reality should be a useless tool much like the Ghostface incarnation are carrying out revenge for useless reasons and on the wrong people. Like Roman going after Sidney in Scream 3... like what?

I always found Stu to be the most frightening character. While Billy was set off by his mom’s abandonment, Stu doesn’t really have a motive. He’s a complete psycho who isn’t really ever a suspect because he’s so goofy. Billy seemingly can’t hide his sinister side at all, having to get caught and cleared by police, then having to fake his death before he’s finally trusted … for about 30sec, and then he reveals the truth.

What I always thought was so brilliant about the film, is the fact that they make Billy seem extremely sketchy. Like, He shows up at Sydney's house right after Casey dies. He shows up at Sydney's house (then drops a phone) right after she got a call from/was attacked by the killer. He showed up at Stu's party ominously in the doorway right after Tatum's murder. There's so many creepy moments of billy in the movie that as an audience member It makes you think: There's no way he's the killer because he's too obvious. They're trying too hard to make us think it's him. So it makes us rule him out, and then brilliantly he was the killer all along. Reverse psychology.

Something I noticed on my last rewatch, when Stu "kills" Billy in his parents bedroom, he goes to wipe off the fake blood and his glove squeaks on the knife. Because it's not as thick as real blood. Also Billy's "blood" sticking to his hands and clothes is a different color and viscosity from the other characters. One of the boys watching Halloween earlier had complained that the blood in it looked so fake, I just love this little detail they added in. The whole movie is full of them, I think that's what makes it so special

One thing that I think a lot of people either overlook or don't think much about, is yes Sidney is the scream Queen and she is badass, but I think a lot of people overlook the fact that she was dead to rights during the first attack. She didn't survive because she was strong. She survived because they had a plan and part of the plan was her surviving, accusing Billy, and staying alive until the finale at the house. They were not trying to actually kill her there. She was always part of the plan till the end. The knocking her senseless against the ground, and then taking his sweet ass time to slowly rub the knife along her neck and then take even more sweet ass time to hold the knife in the air and then not catch her when running up the stairs, they absolutely positively let her go on purpose as part of the plan. Which ended up being a big mistake because here we are almost thirty years later and she's killed like 80% of the murderers haha

@@DanielMartinez-el3uzyeah motivated Billy to kill maureen. And get a partner to help and to sell out in case they got caught. He had no idea that they were going to do the ghost face stuff nor did he have any part of that. He was only in on the Maureen stuff. Which is why in the third movie he said he had no idea that they were going to make a movie of their own and do all the ghost face stuff a year later. But he ended up benefiting greatly from it. He was hands off but the initial driving force to get Billy to kill Maureen and then Billy's anger took off all on its own after that. I would have loved to see scream 3 as it was supposed to be. Before they cut out all of the gore for the most part and dulled it down to basically a PG-13 movie with way too much comedy.

I want to point out that the scene where you can see ghost mask in the principals eyes is an old Victorian theory that one could see the last image of what someone saw before they died etched in their eyes. The police even photographed one of Jack the rippers victims eyes in hopes they could identify the killer this way.

The scene when they're all eating lunch was a key one for me. In my earlier viewings, I assumed the obvious hints around Billy and Stu were too conveniently obvious...like they wouldn't BLATANTLY give away the killers that early in the film, would they? But I appreciate how the film immediately casts doubt when Tatum provides an alibi, for Stu at least. Love how they used red herrings. Also, I initially thought Billy saying "it's called tact you fuck rag" was in defense of Sydney, considering Maureen Prescott's murder. Look at how Sydney reacted to Stu's description.

Man, the very first horrormovie I watched was "Nightmare on Elmstreet" when I was 5.I love that movie and watched it too many times to count since then. When I was 12, "Scream" came out, and I fell absolutely in love. Had to wait for the VHS back then, and I drove my Moviestore guy absolutely insane with almost.allmost daily visits to ask if the movie came out. one of my best memories. I'll hold this movie close to my heart, probably forever 🥲

The music cue of her opening the closet door was more than a misdirection it was telling the audience later this would be important not only that Stu was already in the closet as later on Ghostface jumps out the closet to attack Sidney in the next scene. The creak when she walked by later was her hearing Stu in the closet but she simply ignores it. Right when she answer the phone you hear a weird bird noise in the background when she is on the phone with Tatum. I always thought this was Billy giving Stu the signal to prepare to lunge out the closet as a cue when Sidney finishes her phone call with Ghostface.

I was 9 when this movie was released... It changed my whole outlook on horror/slasher movies since. The original Scream is my number one movie on my Mount Rushmore of all time movies. The jury is still out on the other 3 to complete said Mount Rushmore! It just had such a huge impact on me and how I ended up working out my own manuscripts during high school and winning multiple awards. I still have plenty of scripts optioned. Without Scream influencing me, I don't know where my career would be. RIP Wes

I saw scream 3 on tv before I saw scream and I’d already seen scary movie. NOTHING could have prepared me for the raw horror of scream unedited for tv when I finally watched it and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve seen this movie at least 10 times, mostly by myself, just because I enjoy the humor, the scares, and the talent

There's another reference to a classic horror movie that wasn't covered here. When Sidney, Tatum, and Dewey are out and about and all the stores are closing down for curfew, Tatum mentions 'The Town That Dreaded Sundown,' which is a 70s horror movie based on the real 1946 Texarkana Moonlight Murders.

I’m so confused about the origins of the mask. The mask looks directly correlated to the painting called The Scream. No way that is a coincidence.

I always notice when the sheriff and Dewey are talking about the case outside that restaurant, the sheriff is smoking a cigarette and Dewey is eating an ice cream cone. Every time the sheriff takes a puff, Dewey takes a lick 😂 I was kind of hoping the creator of this vid would say something when he got to that part, but maybe there's no bts info for that bit. In my opinion, it could be a parallel to emphasize how young and immature Dewey is, but it could've also just been for a laugh lol

I worked at a theatre during the original release of the first three movies, so I always got to see them first and then my friends wanted me to take them on my days off so I could get them in free and share my free concessions. So when watching Scream 3 for the second time when Sidney was dreaming of her mother at the window I jabbed my best friend in the side right when Ghostface smashed though the glass. She screamed at the top of her lungs making everyone turn and look at her as she half jumped out of her seat. We are both horror buffs and rarely get scared or startled in movies. She slapped me on the shoulder and we still laugh about it to this day. In fact I just told her 8 year old daughter the story who thought it was hilarious. We watched so many movies together, with me always being on the second or third viewing and she would constantly ask me what was going to happen, to which I replied “watch the movie” eventually evolving into me just holding up three fingers when promoted.

Since I see a lot of people being blown away by pretty common Easter eggs Let me tell you a fun fact that that Matt himself confirmed to me when we were working on his NFT project When he invites Tatum and Sid to the party he says some kind of jive/slang “Kizoo cuz skizoo isouu” He then hands Tatum a face down flower and Sid A face up one It was on my mind for decades so I asked him during the midnight movie club NFT watch along of scream 1 that I helped him host When I asked him he said I was the first person to ever notice that and he completely forgot but when the scene came up he remembered and said he ad libbed it knowing people would never notice Honestly once you hear it it’s so obvious because it’s just Snoop for kill you cuz school is out but yeah I always found it interesting nobody ever found that Easter egg

ole harvey weinstein was also a producer of the movie, which is hinted at his foreshadowed sentencing in real life about how young actresses had to sleep with producers to get leading roles in movies. just like the girl playing neve campbell's character in scream 1 n 2. she said "i can't believe i fkd... to get this role" and then is killed. neve's in-movie mother was also an actress who slept with that producer to get a role and he just brushed it off as "it was the 70s."

Unfortunately I just don't think it would be enough material to make for a good movie. First off they wouldn't be able to use skeet and Matthew Lillard they are way too old. At least not Matthew haha maybe skeet he looks pretty good in the new scream movies. But this would have been pre ghostface so there wouldn't be any ghostface in it and entire movie would be leading up to one single kill if they were going to do that it should have been done within a few years of making the first one. I would have rather see flashbacks to it included in one of the early sequels. That way you don't have to do an entire movie on it everyone is still young and you get some scenes from back then. The closest we got was the movie set made to look like the crime scene

Great video! I remember when Scream came out and, for some reason, I didn’t rush out to see it…despite being the Horror guy in my friend group and one of my friends even saying that it was made about me. 😂. Finally caught it at a drive-in in the Spring/early summer of ‘97 as the 2nd movie on a double feature with The Lost World: Jurassic Park! Loved it…and was trying to keep up with the trivia and nods throughout. And then, the very next day, it was released on video and I immediately rented it! 😂

Great video but I gotta point something huge out that you seemed to have missed. Billy did have a motive and it was that Sidney's mother had an affair with Billy's father and that's why his mother abandoned him. Huge part of the reveal, prolly the biggest of the movie.

I don’t like horror or slashers BUT I have a soft spot for this movie. Back when this came out on VHS, myself, my sister and a cousin were watching this in our living room, and we were youngish teenagers. Me and my sister come from a very religious family and we all still are. So all three of us were totally freaked out in the dark living room watching this, when my very church lady mom came running in from the kitchen screaming she’d been stabbed, while holding one of the big kitchen knives. We screamed bloody murder until we realized my mom was cackling. That’s when I found out my mom has a really twisted sense of humor LOL! doesn’t come out often, but when it does, it’s amazing!! Thank you, Scream, for letting me find out more about my mom! 😂

If I named it tho it would be “A Scary Movie” which would b a nod to “A Nightmare…” and to the play “A Dolls House” by using “A” it basically means that this story can happen anywhere and I love that. Very spooky!
