One by one, the residents of San Francisco are becoming drone-like shadows of their former selves. As the phenomenon spreads, two Department of Health workers, Matthew (Sutherland) and Elizabeth (Adams), uncover the horrifying truth: Mysterious pods are cloning humans - and destroying the originals! I remember seeing this with my older brother when I was 12. It was on Christmas Eve day (12/24) and was kind of a damp, drizzly day. This was one of THE best 70's sci-fi movies. And , like Jaws, it was pushing it with a PG rating. Not just for gore, but the suspense seemed to me to be a few pulses stronger than just any other genre film. This definitely is a creepy classic. It was just on late last night on HBO or Cinemax..it has aged well.

This is probably the best example of why PG horror movies shouldn’t be taken lightly because most often times, they tend to be the scariest somehow. This film is one of the best horror films I have ever seen and despite what you may think going into it, it may just be the scariest movie that was ever made! I have seen many horror flicks and none are as frightening and shocking as this one!

@lw3646

Not really fair. There were some very average and poor horror movies then too just like today, the swarm, the awakening, frogs, night of the lepus, Dracula 72. Jaws 3-4, Jason Takes Manhattan, Nightmare in Elm Street 4-6, the exorcist II. The 70s had some great ones largely because of fresh young directors with new stories like Alien, Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre not because of remakes and sequels, though Dawn of the Dead is popular. In the 1990s you had Silence of the Lambs of the lambs at the start and The Blair Wiitch at the end, both very original and well crafted and scary. The problem in between was it started to turn into parody with all these in jokes winking at the audience movies, the scream films, Anaconda, etc. Cape Fear was dam scary, though not strictly horror. Horror films in the 2000s were mostly slasher remakes with just updated gore. The 2010s had the cattle prod stuff with all the low budget Insidious Paranormal activity rubbish, terrible films like Bye Bye Man and Texas Chainsaw 3d, but also had some really good films too like The Witch, IT, Get Out. Every decade has good ones and also some real stinkers, with most being average.

Each was good in its own way. I think this had the best cast, it goes on too long though the ending. The 1993 version has the best effects and good subtext, the 1950s version is really excellent, the effects are the most basic but it has the best red scare subtext and again very good pacing. The srorylines are near identical so it all comes down to the casting, performances, effects, music.

The bagpipes playing 'Amazing Grace' appear late in the soundtrack of the film at an emotional moment just before the climax; I won't say more lest I spoil it for people who have not yet seen Phillip Kaufman's masterful remake of the 1950s classic. The film, though well regarded, is, in my opinion, somewhat underrated: extending from the darkly comic vision of communist paranoia like its 50s progenitor, it proffers a new take - one that resonates today - the inability for many to differentiate between being and 'appearing', that a replicated self (public persona, media footprint, authenticity based on one's commitment to the simulacrum - whatever you want to call it) overtakes a 'real' self.

Fraser M - Stop Gang Stalking sorry, but it’s not at all a “patriotic tune.” It’s a Christian hymn penned by John Newton, who was English. The words: 1 Amazing grace (how sweet the sound) that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see. 2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! 3 Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come: 'tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. 4 The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures; he will my shield and portion be as long as life endures. 5 Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, and mortal life shall cease: I shall possess, within the veil, a life of joy and peace. 6 The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, the sun forbear to shine; but God, who called me here below, will be forever mine.

Hope not. There's already been 4 versions of it, 3 were excellent. Can just think today it would need to be somevirtue signalling movie with not so subtle themes of big tech, veganism, climate change, gender, mental health, BLM, all neatly packaged into digestible bites for the generation z viewer..... I'm not saying its bad to care about any of these issues, but they tend to make for boring unengaging films when they're thrown in.

Though I am well aware of being in the minority, my opinion points to this film as a MASTERPIECE which far outstrips its predecessor! The 50's version was so bent on alluding to the Red Scare that it forgot to SCARE the viewers! In 1978 the focus was placed in the right place, and they succeeded admirably!
@lw3646
@lw3646 Жыл бұрын
The 50s version for me was great because a lot of horror films are about subtext. The concept of what's happening is the scariest thought of all, I don't need people jumping out from behind doors or loud sound effects. The slow realisation that the whole town is being affected and the way they've taken over the phone lines. The story is basically the same in every version its just the different setting and direction. I do think the 78 version had the best cast. The 1993 version is also worth seeing too with different subtext and updated effects with a faster moving story and less talking. They are all good in their different ways.

The Pulse-Pounding Precision of a Paranoid "Pod"- Cast ... Who are the unemotional somnambulant drones who spitefully denied this absolutely top-drawer "Me-Decade" redo of at least a paltry smattering of "Oscar" nods? I am well aware that genre pictures, let alone remakes, tend to get indifferent short-shrift from the cantankerous white-haired cruds firmly-entrenched within the "Academy"; but this little '70's Sci'- Fi' sizzler was clearly deserving of some "Above-the-Line" nominational love to be sure; not to mention Chapman's coldly-clinical off-kilter San Fran' lensing and Zeitlin's memorably offbeat one-off incidental soundscape. Whenever I put scissors to paper, I am always chillingly reminded of a stylishly-primped Disco' - era Sutherland's "Matthew Bennell" and the remaining balance of that fabulously real leading-four polyester ensemble. From the most-excellent secondary cast, an Art Hindle Genetic Duplication Trimester-Trifecta would be completed with the busted NBC pilot "The Clone Master"(also from '78), then deftly followed by Cronenberg's chilling child-custody manifesto "The Brood" as the placenta-ripping Midnight Afterbirth. Everybody Needs Some "Body" Sometimes ...
