Sabaton History

Күн бұрын

When the Germans launched their last western offensive through the Belgian Ardennes in the winter of 1944, it was up to the American 101st Airborne Division to defend the key city of Bastogne. Surrounded by camouflaged German soldiers and endless artillery bombardments, the 101st, a.k.a the Screaming Eagles, endured.

My grandfather fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the US Army. When the war ended in 1945, he was 21 years-old. He was also the only one in his entire unit who could speak French. He used to say that he went into the army with high school-level French and by the time the war was over, he was fluent. In fact, he spent so much time speaking French that he actually forgot words in English. He died in 2018 at the age of 94. My grandmother, who's three years younger than my grandfather, is still alive and completely mentally intact. In fact, she's become very interested in computers and it's funny to hear this 94 year-old woman (as of 2021) talk about computer components and actually understand what she's saying.

My great grandparents both served in the war, (Grandma as a nurse) Grandpa in this division. None of us really knew until very recently when he opened up while we were visiting, and then I made the connection later while listening to the song. It's cool to learn about it since he doesn't like to talk about it very much, Thank you!

I personally was friends with a veteran of Item Company, 506th parachute infantry regiment, 101st Airborne Division. He sadly has passed on, but told me of his experiences from the jump into Holland through to the end of the war. He told me that he went into Bastogne without a weapon or ammunition. Staff Sergeant Harley Dingman, from Watertown, New York, was awarded the Silver Star for heroism at Foy, Belgium, where he and 14 remaining members of his platoon covered Item Company’s fall back to Bastogne against a company of German infantry. He was the platoon leader, as all senior officers and non-coms had been killed or wounded.

@@voyteee they've previosly told that they don't release their vids based on historical anniversaries. The videos take a long time to make and are usually made in advance (according to Indy, about a month) since everybody lives in different places and there is editing and research etc. They would really struggle to get videos on precise dates. I hope i haven't gotten anything wrong.

"Nuts!" also became the rallying cry of the fans of the TV show Jericho. It even helped the show get a third season when the network wanted to cancel it; fans delivered tons of mixed nuts to CBS headquarters via chartered trucks. I will never forget that show; neat stuff!

My father was drafted in January 1941 in the first draft for one year. On December 6th he was on a ship going out from California to somewhere. They came back the next day. His signal corp unit was sent to Iceland for two years. There was a rumor that since they were overseas for two years they would be sent home. When they were releaved, the rumor was that they would go to Scotland and take the Queen Mary home. When they got to Scotland, there was the Queen Mary. A while later there was a formation and everyone expected to hear that they were going home. They all cheered when told that they were getting a pay bonus each month. No one cheered when told the money was for being in gliders. The glider pilots were the ones who flunked out of bomber school. He didn't make any combat glider landings but his unit was on standby on D Day. He was with the 101 st at Bastogne.

My uncle Wilhoit, who I unfortunately never got to meet, fought in the battle of the bulge and later became a guard at the Nuremberg trials due to his rather large frame. Grandson of Prussian immigrants funny enough; my grandmother always made that clear to me that her family wasn't just German but Prussian. Also, I'm from Texas as well so greetings from the Lone Star State Sabaton History!

Robin de Roos I think that has to do with how the pacific in general was a more brutal theater to fight in than Europe. In Europe, for the most part, civilians were removed from the fighting as best as they could be. Meanwhile the Japanese had no problem using the islands’ natives as traps and completely disregarded the rules of war.
@HaloFTW55

My Grandfather (nicknamed the old man, he was like 33 or so when he joined) was in the 101st airborne in the Ardennes in the winter of '44 (I'm not sure if it was Easy Company or not). He was injured from a grenade or a mortar and got shrapnel in his arm and took a bullet in the shoulder. He never spoke much about his service, but he did give an extra pair of boots to a Frenchman and some chocolate to a young child. I love hearing more about this part of the war to see what he went through to allow me to be here today.
