Sad news to end 2023 - GBRf have retired one of their two remaining Ruston/Paxman engined 'Grids'.
BR Blue liveried 081 will be moved to Longport in the next few days to be stored. It's not announced yet whether the loco will be used to provide donor spares for the GBRf class 69's or whether it will enter the conversion program as an additional loco to become '017'.
The other remaining Ruston/Paxman grid 098 will remain operational for GBRf for the near future.
Here's a selection of some of my favourite recent clips of 081 at work.

56097 has been removed from the class 69 program after bends were found in the chassis mid strip down, 081 is its replacement in the program.

Will 56097 be returning to Mainline again love to see her on Charters and in its Trainload Coal Livery if the bends were repaired and fixed

@@danspotter8618 well since GBRF have basically removed its chance to go back on the mainline by removing it from the program and written it off, no. no it won't be going back on the mainline.

Not that surprised, really. These locos have reached past the 40 year mark, and I thought they'd be retired earlier than that. Fingers crossed it does get preserved.

Sad news for us enthusiasts, but to be fair, 56081 [along with 56098] were due to be stood down after the GBRF class 56 farewell railtour last January

I have never been particularly attracted to the class 56, but , as it sort of carries the DNA of 47 and 50, the class deserves to have a reasonable number preserved as 56s. And whether as 56 or 'modern conversions' its good to see them in day to day use.

You probably like them because they don't ying-ying-ying... In USA it's been EMD ever since steam finished - and the EMD ying-ying is better than the clank-clunk-clank-clunk of the steamers.

Oh no this is sad news. Hopefully it gets preserved on a heritage railway. Definitely shouldn't get scrapped though, wouldn't be suprised though if GBRf are considering to turn in into a class 69. It has such a nice livery, hope it avoids the scrappers torch . Although all great things must come to an end Hopefully it still will have a life into the future. Thanks for the information, great footage of 081 at work as well. 👍

The chassis and bogies are primarily what they’re using in the 69 program, so yes, you could say they’re stripping it for parts

Was it English or Romanian built. I remember jumping up and down in dog sh alley (I never knew it's name - I never saw any). I jumped so I could see through the paint and erection shop windows. And a cruel kid telling me those cabs and pile of scrap were the remains of 55018 the last of the class I needed to see them all - hence my favourite I'd been told it would never leave Finsbury Park it stopped right in front of us at a signal they never stopped at and my bad news telling mate was with us!! I was only 12.

081 was English built. 001-030 were the Romanian built models 👍

Not at present but it could be added as an additional loco (as 017)..

It is now - 097’s got a bent frame and isn’t suitable. 081 is the new donor. (Edit: or not… apparently any damage is reparable and it’ll be staying. Just spares for 081 now…)

@@bfappleGBRf never provide official confirmation of anything anyway, no matter what it is. This particular gen was not speculation but came from a friend with a contact at UKRL in Leicester, but it has turned out 097 is still usable and 081 will return to just being spares.

@@al66class59 the last update that I received from GBRf is that 081 and 098 won’t be converted. Hence my comment about speculation.

I don’t think GBRF would be converting it into a 17th class 69, I believe they only have 16 power units for the program. There are well over a dozen 56s left, so it’s not like this is last of a kind

56097 was the sixteenth loco but it’s got a bent frame and is therefore unsuitable hence 56081s re addition into the conversion list

@@Channel-ij5px Yes, I did see that elsewhere. I do suspect that GBRf would rather have 18 class 69s, but unfortunately they only have the 16 engine blocks

@@andrewreynolds4949 it’s sad considering the amount of work went into restoring 56097 and now since it’s mostly stripped it will just be scrap, at least If it was a 69 it could of being mainline running and maybe even have some sort of plaque/nameplate dedicated to those who restored 097

No. It's a Ruston Paxman, so from the same parentage. Though what you can hear is the turbocharger and I don't know who made them for RP, but I don't think they built their own. I might be wrong but I suspect they were Napier turbos (as in English Electric). It's likely a very similar turbo to the Valenta.

@derektaylor2941 They are napier turbos indeed. SA-085s on the Class 56, Valenta HSTs had either SA-084s or NA256s (some had one, some had the other)

@@Danse_Macabre_125 thanks. It's quite a distinctive sound. Hopefully soon we'll hear a Valenta powered HST return to the network, if Project Miller complete their ambition. Out of curiosity, do the 56s make that same 'grunt' noise when running up as the Valenta does?

These private companies sure like throwing money to the wind by rebuilding Loco's and then scrapping them, may be the whole Railways should be renationalised.

This one hasn’t been rebuilt yet, and probably won’t be scrapped anytime soon. If one has a bent frame like rumors say they’re going to pull it off the conversion line instead of putting work into it.

Four of six traction motors gone. Heard 56097 has a bent frame from canton days so it’ll probably be replacing it in the class 69 project now

cant see why the clowns have retired 56.081 could have kept it, and used it on specials or as a promotion loco.

Maybe the "clowns" are trying to run a business, and keeping around locomotives that they don't need, just because you like them, doesn't make financial sense?
