FUN FACT: Not only is this the ORIGINAL recording of the song, but it was meant to be more sentimental and soft, but everyone at set that day including Jay and his band gotten extremely drunk, this lead to the recording becoming more loud and spooky, this gave birth to Jay's "Voodoo Personality" and allowed him to be the father of "Shock Rock"

From wiki: Hawkins had originally intended to record "I Put a Spell on You" as "a refined love song, a blues ballad". However, the producer (Arnold Maxin) "brought in ribs and chicken and got everybody drunk, and we came out with this weird version ... I don't even remember making the record. Before, I was just a normal blues singer. I was just Jay Hawkins. It all sort of just fell in place. I found out I could do more destroying a song and screaming it to death.

@opensourcecurrency
@opensourcecurrency 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelryan9311 No, this is from 1956- hers was from 1964. There are so many covers of this song- even a huge hit for Creedence. There is only one nuclear version. A lot of musicians tell tales about how they came up with a monster hit by accident- fooling around in the studio for 15 minutes- one take- etc. Some may be half true, but there are no real accidents in music. Also, I think when you go as big and heavy as he does here you may need the "drunk" backstory and the comic voodoo fillers as a defense mechanism. Jimi pulled off the most intense apocalyptic blues usually affecting an offhand manner, fooling around with lyrics, dressed up as Little Richard. You have to sing Vesti La Giuba in a clown suit...

That was his stage persona for that specific song. It was a HUGE hit and twisted everybody's mind who heard it. Part blues- early R&R with a strong element of "novelty". Actually novelty songs were really big in the late fifties through the sixties. But once you had a hit with one, your name was forever tied to that musical category and almost impossible to shake.

I heard this song at some point as a young boy but never gave it much attention or thought until now, at this moment I write this. Wow! Screamin' Jay must have been from another planet, was adopted and raised by Blackfoot Indians, and developed an outstanding voice and such uniquely creative expressions that were out of this world. America is blessed to have so many outstanding artists, with gifts forged in the terrible experiences of slavery and Jim Crow.
