Screen Printing Experiment: Can A Heat Press Cure Plastisol Inks?
Please visit catspitproductionsllc.com and take advantage of the free screen printing educational materials.
This is an educational screen printing video is an experimental video. In this new KZfaq production we test out the idea of curing plastisol inks using a heat press. Many people have asked us before and it seems that some people actually do this so were taking a quick look at the method per your request. In the screenprinting video we lay down a decent amount of white ink on a black tee shirt which has to be among the most difficult to cure on a heat press and we test out the method. This should be a fun video to watch as Jonathan dives in and tries it with only craft paper. I think you'll see why if you're going to try this you'll need a Teflon sheet for sure. For us the print was a total disaster and it really looked bad. Some of the ink picked up on the craft paper while the heat press pushed the ink so much into the knit it spread out some filling it and creating a jagged edge. You certainly would have to lower the pressure, temperature, and perhaps the time to do this without messing up the print. It seems some testing would be in order if this were to be your only means of curing screen printed plastisol inks. I use a heat press to do both water base and plastisol ink, no pressure at 350 to 375 depending on your heat press. It gives a really good look and feel.

For some reason white is a little tricky. If you try any other color you would see it gives great results each time. With white you normally have to do more than one stoke. If you dry in between passes you will get more consistant results with using a press. It is time consuming but Im just starting out with little room so its working great for me.

I use a press all the time since I dont have a dryer yet. I heat to 340 and press light for 20 secs. I dry with a gun first because if you dont dry well to the touch it will distort the image. You definitely need the Teflon sheet. It also looks like you had a lot of ink. Its to much thats not dry under the top layer so when heated it smears. I have this happen with the poly ink so I first hover the press for twenty then press normally if I know the ink is on the thick side.

330 for 15-20seconds at the right amount of pressure works great. lasts longer than a conveyor cured shirt. takes the ink longer to crack over time. pressure will dictate what texture the final product has because of the teflon or craft paper used

That's interesting. Not sure about the longevity comparison but if you cure plastisol ink properly through the belt dryer it will outlast the shirt. I have never had an issue with cracking until the shirt becomes very old. That will happen with any plastisol print 20 years later. Thanks for watching. It's kool for someone to finally address the issue fully, i actually started doing this about a month ago since i don't have a dryer but yes you need a teflon sheet, very low pressure and it has to be a cold peel in most cases. So i would say, its easier and faster than a heat gun cure but slower and more trouble than conventional commercial methods. It works for me only because i only have on average 20-50 prints a week.

Have been using a heat press for years to cure my plastisol prints and get a much better finish than the conveyor dryer, it flatterns out the t shirt fibers when curing giving it a much more crisp finish, I flash it then put it in the heat press with a sheet of grease proof baking paper over the print for 40sec works every time.

I saw a guy once, and he used a piece of the back paper that comes with vinyls, that ones for plotter machines.. he putted that paper with the bright side facing the stamp and pressed with the heat press.. he said it cures the plastisol and give it a "brighty" look. Sorry for my basic english, Im from Argentina, greetings man! I love your videos!

Hi, thank you for all your great videos they helped me a lot in the beginning when I first started working on printing t shirts, I work with vinyl, sublimation and screen printing, I don't have a dryer but I do have a heat press that I use in all 3 of the different types of jobs, so I use it to cure the ink. Plastisol is basically vinyl or viceversa, and to apply vinyl the settings are about 320 F for 10 to 15 sec, so to use a heat press to cure plastisol the settings are 340 F for 10 sec using light pressure and a teflon or silicone sheet. Once again thank you and keep up those videos coming. If you are ever in Ensenada Baja Mexico look me up...

You can use the teflon, 385 degrees with 3 seconds but before take out the teflon you have to be press very little the whole print usign a napkin or towel and then take out the teflon without any ink. That's take down the temperature in the print after press for 3 seconds in order to prevent any ink reciduous in the teflon.

Interesting watching your video as I had wondered about using a heat press as well, but only using the heat press to hover over the ink the same way a flash cure unit would. With a swing away heat press, it would provide an even area of heat straight down rather than a clamshell press where one side is higher than the other. Enjoying your videos to learn more. I do sublimation printing but am interested in doing some silk screen maybe in the future.

Maybe you could try reducing the pressure until there is little to no contact. I don't think that you need any actual contact. You could even try hovering it 1/8th above the shirt.

Surprised to hear your thoughts on this. I do this because I think it makes my prints look more smooth lol. But i also do it much different. I use my flash dryer and semi cure the ink. I get the ink to about 320 and keep it there for around 10 seconds. Then I bring it to the heat press and press it for the last little bit. If you dont at least flash the ink well- you are going to run into issues of it sticking to the teflon.... or just making a mess as you try to carry the shirt over to the heat press. I believe a lot of screen printing shops charge a premium for a heat press finish.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 2 жыл бұрын
This video was really about using a heat press to cure the ink. Not necessarily using it to provide a smooth finish. In any case if you provide it as a finishing effect then you should charge more for that since it increases the work involved with printing the shirts. And please don't get me wrong, many people use a heat press to cure inks. You have to remember, for me this is an experiment because I have a flash cure and a belt dryer. Thanks for watching! Yup, Andy has it pretty much. The off contact is a small space between the screen and the item you are printing. It allows for proper ink shear which results in good coverage and resolution. 350 at 25 seconds. white ink on black hoodie. If you peel off the sheet before cooling it will pull up ink. If you let it cool. It looks great. I don't know why it pulls off when hot because the ink is fully cured. Maybe being hot its still in like a liquid/melted mood? Its takes a lot longer then a belt but its all i have and ive done 100 shirt order and 48 hoodie order front and back. takes Time but works

Dude, your videos are awesome... I'll go as far as to say I've learnt more from you than anywhere else... Although, I have one thing to say on this video! DON'T CLAMP DOWN THE HEAT PRESS! I only cure using a cheap Chinese heat press, I have adjusted it so it's basically a hot plate! My press has a screw on the back which makes it so that even when the press is fully clamped there is a gap of about 1-2 cm. I set my press to 190 degrees C. And leave it for about 30 seconds to a minute. (when printing dark colours to white tees on a t77 screen, about 22-240 for thicker inks/darker shirts). Hope this helps others in my situation! Keep on making these awesome videos and hello from sunny (not sunny) England! 😉

Very cool, it works for a lot of people but I really didn’t like my adventurous test. If I played with it more I know I could do it regularly and do it well. But if you have a flash cure unit I would suggest using that instead of the heat gun. And if what you’re doing with the heat press is working, then maybe it would be wise to stick with that. Only a belt dryer will speed things up enough to warrant the cost and space. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠

Yes it is posible to cure a plastisol ink with Heat Gun, but you have to be an extra careful to move heat gun at the entire surface of print and to cure a whole 1,5 min at 10sm height from tee-shirt to the gun. Rotate a heat gun over a print, and don't stop at one point coz u gona BURN a t-shirt. If a part of a t-shirt you don't cure properly, that part of the ink will come OFF at the first washing. I use a 2000w heat gun Extol,Einhell and Black & Decker. 3 years with expirience of heatGun.

I think the shirt needs a powder coating that helps dry the ink, then when you press it, the powder is absorbed by the ink while it sets. (just guessing from watching plastisol transfer vids) I really don't know.

That would be for a plastisol heat transfer. Here I was just experimenting with a method to cure a plastisol screen print on the shirt. It does work and will work if you adjust the pressure on the heat press. But for a plastisol heat transfer, yes. There is a powdered adhesive that is semi cured with the print when you make the transfers. But this video is not about plastisol transfers. Nice! Thanks for sharing your details. I know this can be done but it does seem a bit touchy and you would certainly have to work out the time or heat as well. Back side of adhesive paper, eh? Interesting. It seems a Teflon sheet would be needed but you are using something like I used in this video? Thanks for sharing; I know everyone will appreciate that. Hi, Can i use my 16x16 IR flash dryer to cure plastisol transfer print care label
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 11 жыл бұрын
No I do not do any of this any of the time. This was an experimental video. I use a belt dryer to cure my shirts and I have a flash cure unit on press for multi colored jobs. You can use a heat gun on press for testing and set up but you don’t want to use it to cure the plastisol inks. Some people may do this but it is very inconsistent and you’ll never truly know if the entire print is fully cured. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠

some use just a home iron. why not use that heat for 10sec? (i am not yet aware of the heat settings how far or low a heat press machine can be set) and whats the best sheet you would recommend? :)
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 7 жыл бұрын
Because this is plastisol ink, not water based ink. An iron cannot reach 330 degrees F as far as I know. If you have one that can, then it might work. But plastisol ink needs to be cured at 330 degrees F for up to a minute or longer depending on how much ink you actually print. Water based inks can be heat set with an iron on the other hand. Hey, I was wondering whether pre-printed plastisol ink on a thin (virtually see through) paper would withstand a temperature of 200 degrees Celsius (392 F). I intend to use printed paper on my grinding wheels, which will then go into an oven for baking. The temperature in the oven is around 180-200 degree Celsius. The main issue is, the ink shouldn't melt at that temperature kept for a prolonged time..
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 10 жыл бұрын
No, you would not want to use plastisol ink for that. At very high temperatures the ink will become tacky and fragile. I would probably contact and ink manufacturer and discuss your project as it may be technical and require a specific product. Hey Jon! I'm still a newb in screen printing but this "curing plastisol ink with a heat press" thing kinda works for me. I press my shirts for 10 seconds in about 320F and I use a teflon sheet. I have a flash dryer but I wonder, can a heat gun alone fully cure plastisol inks??

do you think if you used less time it would've been a better outcome?
@CatspitProductions

I think less pressure would have been the trick. It's totally doable though. You just have to dial it in to where you have a cure and like the results. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

Christophe Delhougne Yeah a belt dryer will do the trick much better and faster. Also unless you hover the heat press over the shirt to cure it can flatten out the image changing the way it looks somewhat more like a plastisol transfer. But many people do this with great results. Actually my white inks have no problems passing through a 110 mesh all by themselves. If you need to add a thinner or a curable reducer/soft hand base in order to get your white ink to flow through a 110 mesh then the ink may be semi gelled. You shouldn’t have to add anything to a white ink for it to print through a 110 mesh. Adding anything to a white will reduce the opacity that you are paying for from the vendor. I keep burning shirts with my flash dryer. Do i need to do like 2 shorter runs under the flash dryer maybe? Or would it be better to just shorten the time under the flash dryer? I’m just worried about the ink not curing.

LOL... I think it can work but you need little to no pressure for the higher volumes of ink. It probably works great with water based ink heat setting after the ink dries by air. But plastisol inks seem to be much trickier to do this way. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

Yeah it is possible. That is the key phrase. Possible. But I don’t recommend this. Most people do not have the patience or attention to detail to make this work well with plastisol inks. Water based maybe but not plastisol. Even a flash cure can be sketchy so a heat gun is not the greatest idea but if it works for you then that is great. ☠

I see. Thanks for the reply. But i have another question though. I see you drying the ink when it's still in the platen. Do you do that everytime when printing plastisol inks? I mean, does it really work to dry it evenly to the touch? I haven't use that technique. Because some of the people I talked to discourage me from doin' it because, according to them, you cannot dry the whole design evenly expecially if it's beyond A4 size. Hope you can give your side. Thanks again!

Irish Redneck I never use the dry stencil commercially. I did some testing with it and I did a few prints and found it to be very cool. Finicky but cool. The only flaw to it is; it is what it is and it may or may not work on all laser printers. Some people have more trouble getting it to work than others. But if you have patience, time and a little money to invest in testing it's worth a try. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

If it were not "dried" enough that would actually require more time under the heat rather than less. Plastisol ink has to reach about 320 to 330 degrees F for it to cure properly. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

Thanks for trying my inks! I appreciate your support! I do have an issue with that wrist but it came about by years of abuse I think. Not just from screen printing but riding BMX, skate boards and dirt bikes. And then the screen printing..... LOL ;) My shoulders are more of an issue these days. I wear the wrist support to remind me to be careful when working with that hand. It also does give a bit of support. I used to have to wear wrist locking braces at night because I would tweak my wrists while I slept. Today I sleep like a mummy so it's not an issue anymore. But the wrist is sensitive and can hurt.
