This week at the screened porch I installed the sub-rake, the second layer of synthetic roof paper, framed in and installed T1-11 on the knee-wall, started framing in below the roof line and installed the solid soffit.

17:00 One alternative way to deal with the mismatch between your 3" beam and the 2x4's you're installing there would be to lay the cripples at 90-deg., with their wide side flush against the outside. Gives you plenty of structural strength for the roof (not that any is really needed) plus more nailing surface for the siding. Anyway, that's how I do mine. 🙂

12:00 Although I haven't tried it, I wonder if some slender stainless steel brads would serve better fastening down that T-111 to the knee wall. Screws always seem to chew it up and promote rot, whereas stainless (maybe aided by some construction adhesive) should give plenty of grab without the gouges.
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 8 ай бұрын
I agree with your opinion, but, my jobs are dictated by my customers. The customer changed his mind and wanted the T1-11 covered with siding, so, in the end it wouldn't have made much of a difference. Very few customers will pay for stainless fasters, which, is what settles this kind of discussion. Thanks

Looking good! I am curious though, what happens when the roof needs to be replaced and all those shingles are buried under the patio roof? do they just cut around them? seems like it would have been more work, but better to peal back the shingles to attached the patio roof to the house, then waterproof and shingle everything back up?
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 4 жыл бұрын
Yep the roofer will just cut the shingles around all the framing. You could remove the shingles and install the ledge or ledges as I did here, but, it's not necessary and takes longer. Ask a roofer how many valley's he has had to cut because they framed it the same way that I did here. Thanks for watching and commenting.

9:30 I may have to dispute the claim that deck screws can or should be used as "utility screws" (i.e. installed anything but vertically straight down). They are hella brittle compared with true construction screws and, of course, 10p or 12p nails.

Hey thanks for making this video. I'm doing something very similar on my house and using your videos as a template. One question though... you mentioned you used regular 2x6s for the rakes on the side and used the home depot pre-bent rake metal on the side for the fascia but I noticed the rake metal only has a 1" width and regular 2x6s are 1.5" in depth. Is this correct? Do you not cover 1/2" of the regular 2x6. I was considering getting 1" pine boards as the rake which are only 0.75" in width and would fit the rake fascia but wasn't sure if I'm missing something here.
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 3 жыл бұрын
No you're absolutely right I usually don't cover the last 1/2" of the rake. The j-channel is 1" depth and covers, so, it hides the gap. You could use the 3/4" trim, but, if you are finishing with siding the j-channel will hang proud of the face of the metal. If the 1x is on top of the finish product ( T1-11 maybe ) then sounds like a good plan. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope everything works out for you.

Unless you used the new structural screws that came out this year. You have to nail those beams. Ordinary screws don't have the structural strength of nails. Nails are for shear, screws for axial torsion.
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 4 жыл бұрын
In the old days....like 6 years ago nails and screws were interchangeable. I have included a link to a construction guide from 2014. This is no excuse because what you're saying is true. My only point would be that building code is starting to evolve beyond minimum standards and is turning into a CYA for the jurisdiction...IMO. Nobody wants to have deck failures so they are going above and beyond with there deck guides now. For example, is there really anything wrong with field cut stair stringers? Well, the newest deck guides say you can only do this for horizontal lengths of roughly 7ft. Someone commented how I installed the ledger onto the brick veneer and how you can't do that by code now. But we all know just a couple years ago this was perfectly acceptable and is fine when installed correctly. This has nothing to do with nails in a beam providing more shear strength, I agree with you, but, in indicative of building departments writing codes now to achieve a "perfect" build...again IMO. "Old" deck guide from 2014: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.cascadetwp.com/Services-Departments/Building-Inspections/How-To-Resources/Wood-Deck-Construction-Guide.aspx&ved=2ahUKEwi2kIaz5aHpAhUDgnIEHVn7DxUQFjAAegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw3_KQT915LMK4DAISmjySo0 "New" deck guide from a nearby county, where it takes a week to get a deck permit mind you. Note that it still shows screws as acceptable for beam work. Also note stringer detail section and window glazing specs: www.howardcountymd.gov/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=UX6n2vQ3T8I%3d&portalid=0 Thanks for watching and commenting I love the discussion

@@horstcarpentry no worries, i could just hear my statics and dynamics professor in the back of my mind. FWIW i learned the hard way to always sister beams on the most level true surface you can find. Never going to power plane in the air again god help me. I get the ledger change to the code. Seen many decks pulling away. Bricks aren't attached in a manner to support the force in that direction either. Simpson makes those new strong tie connectors, you only need two per 12 linear ft iirc. Okay the stringers seems over board. I bet someone did something stupid, someone sued. Since tort precedent basically makes the laws these days... sadly here we are :(

Great work, my only comment would be to a say that screwing absolutely everything is such a pain. If youre at an angle then the wood will walk on you. Personally I nail framing and sheathing. I might use some extra hidden screws on joists but screwing on siding is just too time consuming to make any money. I like the way you work tho, I do most projects alone as well. Yes I screwed down the posts to the deck surface. In my opinion, the most important aspect of the build is to stack all of your loads. You work hard but not smart. I would have tied the stoop step's into the framing to begin with. Cut the asphalt back Square so the platform look's square to the wood. Same thing with where your lattice ties into the asphalt. If it was cut back it would look better and easier to make your bottom lattice tie in better. You do a good job but man you sure earn your money. Working by yourself is hard so make every move count.
