Every week, Eco India brings you stories of innovations from across India and Europe, and the people who make them possible. Our top story this week puts the focus on what it takes to run a hyper-local farm in the middle an urban jungle. Using hydroponics, Mumbai-based Herbivore Farms grows leafy greens and delivers it right to your doorstep.

Pros: 1)Vertical farming which saves space. 2)Everything is under a controlled environment, even post harvest management practices which ensures fresher food and intact flavours 3)Saves water Cons: 1)Electricity costs must be very high because one has to maintain temperature, light , humidity etc. The technology to maintain these climatic factors must be very expensive. This translates into 21$ for around 1kg of leafy greens!! 2) this farming technique has been mostly adopted in the Arctic where u don't have optimum conditions for growing vegetation. India on the other hand is blessed with an agriculture friendly climate. Even our arid regions can grow millets and pulses!! 3)Why can't we try growing palak, methi , bhindi, baingan(which has been part of our daily diet since childhood) instead of fancy Western foods like kale, lettuce etc. Why are these people tagging our local market produce as unhealthy and unhygienic? This shows the pseudo elitist mentality of our current generation.

Pseudo Elitist! True that. My cousin has been growing vegetables in his small farm (along with his job), from last 1 year and he doesn't use any pesticides or fertilizer. He sells the same in the market, at market price itself. I consider it more healthier and cheaper alternative, moreover, he is also not contributing to carbon emission in anyway. Such level of sophistication in farming has very less scope in Indian market, and the targeted buyers are the Higher income group ppl only, until they drastically reduce the price.

@@saatwikmhetre3955 Why? We aren't the part of the world? Though we have the largest irrigated land in the world, still we are doing terrible on hunger index. Even if we productively incorporate modern agriculture techniques, we are looking at major consumption of resources. There are so many factors, it's never black and white, but according to me, it won't hurt to save some resources and water for our kids who have to suffer our decision. Also, we can use barren lands for the project, take food where there is a need, take environment factors out of the equation by 90% or more.

Hey Shijin! We have adopted a Zero Waste Packaging system for our deliveries. We use high quality lock and lock boxes to deliver our produce, and every week when a new box is delivered to a customer, the old one is collected and taken back. We wash these with chemical free soap and reuse them the following week. This way we are constantly using the same boxes and no plastic ever goes into the bin.

This type of food is not good for ppl in India. Better suited for ppl living in the mountains (ice glaciers) as they can't grow them on land. In South India, there's my uncle who is currently doing organic farming on normal lands -70acre. No pesticides/herbicides used. He goes by using natural waste and mixing them to with chillies to make his own organic pesticide for controlling pests. Now that's organic! Not this water thing! And gosh I havent seen/heard of these veggies shown in video available at local market. Anyways , good luck ppl. It is all bout personal choice

@Panthera The exact same nutrients that you find in soil are dissolved in the water. Light is light. Whether it is LED or the sun's. Plants cannot distinguish between them, which is why hydroponic farming works. Not only that but anything that is made in soil takes longer to grow than in a hydroponic environment. Which essentially means more yields for the farmer. Many studies have already been conducted and there is no difference between something grown in soil and something grown with hydroponics. Both are "real" foods.

Every insect of food chain matters. In this many microbes not participating into food chain due that these vegetable may grow faster but lack in other ingredients. In farms microbes in soil, and above soil contribute to entire farming life and directly build immunity system. Without microbes, insects, flyies, these leafy greens good but bad for immunity as whenever they people sick they their body will not be able cure itself, this can result in frequent virus attack whenever's u go out come back withe bacterial infection. Natural food has everything which requires to survive in any open environment. If u eat these kind of food then need to stay in those kind of environment where food grown. Eat nautural be natural and survive in any kind of environment.

@dnranjit
@dnranjit 5 жыл бұрын
not exactly ...plants absorb a certain wavelength of light if you provide the same wavelength through artifical light it will grow the same way. Ofcourse, there could be some difference in growth depending on which wavelength are missing.Remember at the end it is photosynthesis to generate energy.If less energy the plants may grow poorly and if sufficient energy they will grow healthy.

In small pots, there is possible to grow coriander, palak, methi, green chillies n lots more...One has to get time as well interest in this..But, it's nice job to grow fresh organic vegetables in your own place. @MATHA NOSHTO-MAN I have done some research on vertical farming during my college days. Even if u use solar panels after the conversion losses and assuming they use light upto 20-24hrs a day it can barely supply one layer of plants. It's is actually ridiculous they can convince people that it has no carbon footprint. These are just marketing startups as it's very easy to setup such farms in any space available.
