๐๐๐๐.
This time we were able to adventure with sardines, swim beside a whale shark, and see lots of turtles among other creatures living in the sea. Our main focus coming was for scuba diving and snorkeling, which we all accomplished. Come along and check out more of our adventures in Panglao and Bohol in the Philippines.
The main deciding factor in choosing Panglao was Sierra Madre Dive Center. There almost 30 dive spots. Thanks to the owners Troy and Chen! The dive center was open to creating a month-long dive program for Lucas, Henry, and their friend Jake including an opportunity to volunteer at the dive shop to learn about caring for scuba diving equipment and the logistics of running a dive shop.
Dan a dive master was awesome with the kids. Also wanted to thank Elena and Cynthia who also helped make the transition great.
The boys did there advanced scuba diving through PADI. There are almost 7,000 PADI diver centers worldwide and around 6,000,000 active scuba divers out of the global population that's getting close to 8 billion people.
I'll tell you a little more info about what it means to get advanced scuba certified while you enjoy some of this footage. First you have to have your open water certification which you can get over several days if there is good weather and you take some tests. Next you have to typically be 12 years old, which Henry will be advanced certified once he turns 12 and can do a night dive. You have to log so many dives before you can attempt the advanced scuba diving cert. You also have to complete a medical questionnaire and me physically fit to dive. some of the advanced scuba diving classes they took was underwater navigation, night diving, buoyancy control, fish and coral identification. And finally a final exam that shows they understand dive planning, safety protocols, diving physics, and other relevant topics. we were all so proud of them and now they have a new skillset which they will have for life.
When you go diving you have to watch your oxygen levels. We were typically able to dive anywhere between 40-50 minutes. Time and everything just becomes so still and when we come up it seems like we were only down there for 10 or so minutes. Its magical and magnificent every time I go.
The green sea turtles are named for the green color of their fat, rather than their shells. this island is a protected marine area. Conservation efforts within this area aim to preserve critical habitats for marine species, including sea turtles. To be clear, Tourists should must maintain a safe distance from turtles, avoiding touching or chasing them, and refrain from feeding or disturbing them in any way.
Whale sharks are the largest fish species in the world. The average size is typically between 6 - 10 meters. Despite their massive size, whale sharks are filter feeders, primarily consuming plankton, small fish, and other microscopic organisms by filtering them from the water. They accomplish this by swimming with their mouths wide open, creating a vortex that draws in water and traps prey on specialized filter pads in their gills. Despite their size, whale sharks are gentle and docile creatures, posing no significant threat to humans. They are known for their calm demeanor and often tolerate close encounters with divers and snorkelers, making them a popular attraction for ecotourism.
While exact lifespan estimates are difficult to determine, research suggests that whale sharks lifespans range from 70 to 100 years or more. However, their slow reproductive rate and maturing late contribute to their vulnerability to population declines.
These creatures were so beautiful. It was a little sad to see the whale sharks so dependent on food. Henry and I had some great discussions about ethics and what all of that means.
Sardine runs in the Philippines involve massive schools of millions of sardines swimming together in synchronized patterns. Sardines are voracious feeders, primarily consuming plankton and small fish. During the sardine runs, these fish engage in frenzied feeding behaviors, forming bait balls that attract predators such as jacks, tuna, barracuda, etc..
Stay tuned for our next location...
