Having done a couple of thousand hours of scud running in the Rockies, I'm aware of a number of reasons why it isn't for everybody. One example out of many, is if you're following the Alaska Highway southbound past Muncho Lake, and you miss the highway turning into a crack in the mountain wall, you cross the Toad River and your next crack leads into a box canyon. There's a gravel road running south off Hwy 97 and into that box canyon to increase the confusion. Unless you've got good vis, or you really know the ground, it's an easy mistake to make. It's also always fatal because you fly around a corner into a wall. If you can do a good hammerhead turn on no notice you've got a slim chance. I flew a C-185 (70MPH, some flap down) around that box canyon searching for an American whose "scud running" in the mountains didn't pan out. There were quite a few general aviation airplanes embedded in the canyon walls, like lawn-darts, all at around 6-7000' ASL. I also remember sitting in the pilot's room in Fort Nelson, BC, with four other professionals who flew in the Rocky Mountains for a living every single day. Those pilots, and I, thought that it was too windy to fly in the mountains that day. Along comes the overloaded Cessna, flown by a dentist from Nebraska, en route to Fairbanks. We tracked his flight and were relieved when he made it. Pure dumb luck. This is a great video, and it's an easy trip for an experienced pilot, but don't disrespect it. You'll die.

I won’t scud run in the relatively flat Midwest. Not doing it in or near the mountains. But I’m a purely VFR only type of guy as I don’t want flying to be anymore stressful then necessary

So cool! It's amazing HOW MUCH MORE interesting the scenery is at these altitudes rather than, say, from 30 to 40 thousand feet in a jet liner.

Great visuals, thanks for sharing. I’ve taken a few pistons transcon, and it was always an adventure. You see a lot and get to think about a lot of things more easily managed in a jet, but it’s a fun challenge.

Nice video! Flying to Alaska is on my bucket list. I just got back from a trip from Michigan to the Bahamas in my 182. One question for you, I noticed that 182 has a vent tube on both wings. I've never seen that before. What model 182 is it?
@KerryDMcCauley
@KerryDMcCauley Жыл бұрын
I think it was a Q model. The 1981 282 I was flying in Namibia last week had 2 vent tubes as well.
