Your tutorials were the first ones that ever took the time to explain things so clearly and fun. I was able to have the courage to attempt my first little project; a pirate figure. And each vid has helped me stay motivated with my work. Thanks so much. Also: I hope you do some dragon tutorials in the future, that would be so sick!

I watched the series and love it. I have dabbled in sculpting with Sculpey off and on for more that 30 years - I remember when sculpey color was a thing before sculpey III or Premo! That stuff was stiff! I really appreciate your teaching style and how you really took the time with each of the features. You are right, there isn’t a lot of more in depth classes and we need them and you did it beautifully! Thank you so much for doing this series, I look forward to looking into your other videos and seeing what else I can learn from you. Silly me, I started with sculpting faces that are 1” tall, your size seems much more manageable! Great job and thank you!

Your motivation is phenomenal. I have been sculpting since around 2015 with polymer and plasticine clays. Watching every single one of your vidios has made me wander " Is it me that I'm watching" because you and I are evidently on the same wave length. Watching you, is like watching me. Think like me. Explain like me. This is too deep. Bottom line, I'm a fan. Keep doing what you're doing. It will work out for you. Thanks.

I am sorry but I have to laugh at something. The part of you going straight to the teeny bopper girls at the mall because they are around the junk jewelry sounded wrong. We all knew what you meant. Lol I love your work and the detailed tutorials. I love the 10 videos. Your video lengths and detailed description are perfect. I appreciate the time you take. Thank you!

I almost never leave comments on KZfaq, but these are the BEST sculpture instructional videos on the internet. I'm actually sad I finished this series already! Please make more just like this. It's perfect in every way. I'm so grateful to you & will be watching each of you videos again several times, I am sure. When I have the means to offer financial support, you bet I will! By the way, you are an incredible artist and you are extremely entertaining to watch. (Thanks so much for your reply on Twitter. I was so excited to show you my sculpture. #NailedIt ...LOL!!) Thank you so much for the kind words! I hope that the detail I put into my teaching will inspire better artists out there to do the same. And don't worry, I'm working on the next series for intermediate Sculpey classes as we speak. There will be some other misc. tutorials before that since it takes me a long time to make these puppies.

Oh, I can't wait! You just made my day. I'm looking forward to those classes so much! I use Monster clay, but overall I think the clays are similar enough(?) But your classes have me considering getting some Sculpty as well, since I'd love to bypass additional & tedious casting & molding steps to achieving a final product. (I've actually never molded & caster anything yet, due to the cost of silicone. If you have any tips on how to cast detailed work with less expensive products, I'd love to hear them!)
@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 7 жыл бұрын
The only really cheap way I know to do molding/casting is with plaster. But you have to ZERO undercuts for that to work, which means very stylized sculpts or cutting them up into a lot of pieces.

You're the best guy on the internet! Thanks for all the work. I've painted quite a bit. Your black layer is a great idea and great look. But you might find an easier technique: Mix the acrylic with water beforehand. It will still pool in your shallow spots, and dry darkly. You're already using the brush and paper towels. Adding the water beforehand will simplify it and give you more work time.

Hello Josh, thank you so much for these informative tutorials. I have watched loads of u tube tutorials but yours are the absolute best. I live in Cheshire UK and have recently got interested in sculpting. I watched many videos but somehow they never quite explained what I needed to know and I was disappointed in the results of my sculpts. So I thought, just keep experimenting and trying new ideas. Then I came across your videos and I thought thank goodness here is someone who actually teaches the things I want to learn and doesn’t fill the video with film flam. I hope you do many more, thank you once again.

I haven't used my art degree much since graduating as I've been a busy programmer instead. This winter I haven't managed to get out on the mountain bike either so I thought I'd see if I still had an artistic streak. I started with a cheap block of DAS which was nothing short of awful. I got hold of a small block of FIMO which felt infinitely better but its tackiness is its failing. I now have some Super Sculpey in beige with some firm on order. I am totally sold. With your videos as guides and some other clips on armature building I've been able to faithfully recreate some a character in clay from a single sketch. I take my hat off to you sir. And I promise that as soon as I have cleared the expense of a new kitchen I will be Patreonisifying. For your quick videos, will you be covering quick makes like small characters and stylised creatures? Getting perfect shapes like spheres etc would be very useful. Perhaps you could cover some other basics like additive vs subtractive techniques. Do you use the same base throughout or transfer to a display base at some point? Keep up the good work. It's appreciated here over the pond.

I've never had any problems with that. I'm sure you would run into problems if you had a thin layer of Sculpey over a thick piece of metal. But at the ratios I've ever used it's not a concern.

I decided I wanted to try doing some basic sculpture. I checked out your vids. I ordered some super sculpey. I watched all your vids and learned tons. Thanks for this series. Super well done and presented. The whole "armature minimalist" thing i did not get on with, with models cracking, breaking and just distorting as I worked on them. You must have a very careful way of holding your work. I am interested in learning hard-edged modelling in Sculpey. I have a digital 3d background, and love sci-fi, so would love to do something in a cyberpunk style, but so far sculpey has not really worked out for doing hard-edged mechanical things. If you have any tips, that would be awesome.

Have been following this series from the start. Love it, but you might want to tone down the sound effects. I would love to see a tutorial on how to sculpt a "realistic" dragon. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah... for some reason the sound/music is much quieter in my editor than it ends up on KZfaq. No idea why that's happening but I'll try to compensate. I'll add your dragon idea to my list, thanks!

I just binge watched this series and am sad it is over. Have you had any issues with the spray paint on the sculpey? Anytime I have used spray paint on any kind of polymer clay, the surface became tacky after a while.

Glad you liked it. I've never had any problems with tacky sculptures. I always use primer spraypaint first. Maybe that's why.

Hey Josh when are you going to show those MagicSculpt techniques? I'm having major issues and I might cash it in for another medium.

Isnt it possible to just mix the paint and the water beforehand so you get a really thin paint that seeps in the cracks, and that way you dont have to worry about it being too thick in some places?
@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 7 жыл бұрын
Yep. I do it both ways depending on my mood.

When you make jump rings they jump right off the table and get sucked straight into the abyss of the floor never to be seen again. So that's where the name "jump rings" come from

I have never done anything like this before but I really want to. Can you please do a super easy beginner tutorial. I found this project to be too intimidating

That's an interesting idea. I'll think about that.

As far as scientific plausibilityness goes, I've read a lot of books and seen a lot of movies/shows and the ones that always stand out to me are the ones that don't necessarily adhere to science from the real world, but instead focus more on their own rules and follow those closely. There's this series called Mistborn that I've been meaning to finish, in the books some people are special-flower-chosen-one-guys and have the ability to make a special kind of coin either fly towards them or fly away from them, which seems like a lame power but the special-flower-chosen-one-guys will do things like stomping the coin into the ground and pushing it away while standing above it to fly. Basically I'm just saying that the book is good at following its own rules. Especially if you're doing sci-fi, I think it would be great to be scientifically accurate to a certain degree, but I think whats more interesting to read are stories that make robust use of their own lore. PS you're videos are amazing and I love you xoxo

Yes. I've been reading Sanderson's Stormlight Archive novels, and I agree that what's important in a story is internal consistency. And a very important of visual design is internal consistency. And being humans, we have a lot of experience with bodies and have subconsciously learned the rules of how joints and muscles look. That's why it's important to reference the real world when you sculpt as opposed to just winging it. Not because we have to make things scientifically plausible, but because that's how you fool a human eye.

Do you have any video about how to bake Sculpey clay?
@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 6 жыл бұрын
Besides what I mention in this video, the only important tip is to pre-heat your oven because during heating many ovens can spike the temp. I show how you can do multi-stage baking in this video as well. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZqEpLyGnLaZcps.html

Josh Foreman I asked because I think is dependent the size of the part, so the temperature and time can be changed. I just wondering, I just learning
@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 6 жыл бұрын
Ah. I assumed you had the directions on the package. The temperature shouldn't change based on size, but the time does. Generally it's 15 minutes for every quarter inch of thickness. I don't think you should have any parts thicker than an inch. That's what the foil and armature is for, so you don't have super thick parts.

Would you do a tutorial for the faun in Pan's Labyrinth?
@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 6 жыл бұрын
I think you're the second person to ask for that. While it is one of my favorite movies, I doubt I'll do something that specific. But I would like to teach the stuff that anyone would need to know in order to make one. (Such as curling horns.)

It would be great to know how to do the curling horns. :-) I'm definitely going to start donating on Patreon when I get paid on the first of the month and will set it up for every month. You're the least expensive art teacher I've seen and I've learned more from you than from years in college.
