There is a British saying "all aboard the skylark!" the expression comes from the popular boat name "Skylark”, and refers to the prospect of having fun. The Skylark is not just a beautiful and captivating bird it’s song has captivated the imagination of writers, poets, musicians and artist for centuries. Their lively singing reminds us that there is beauty all around us, even in hard times. Skylarks embody hope and remind us to stay true to ourselves on our journey of self-discovery. In many cultures, skylarks are a sign of luck, good fortune, and abundance in life. As totem animals, skylarks can remind us to be free-spirited and unafraid to make changes and explore new possibilities. It seemed fitting to name my boat "Skylark"
So I thought how cool it would be to sculpt a bronze Skylark totem for the mast of my 12 1/2.

Beautiful job on that masthead fitting. I almost thought you were going to start laughing as you explained why the boat would not tip over with the masthead fitting on it. Skylark is going to be a stunning looking boat.

Thanks for the backstory on Skylark. The context of the name, bird, and nautical connection is a beautiful compliment to your mast head sculpture. Thanks for sharing another great episode.

Bob. The Skylark bronze ornament at the top of the mast is an exceptionally nice 'grace note'. I also appreciated your explanation of how to weld bronze pieces together which up til now has been somewhat of a mystery to me. The care and patience you exhibit in your work is a valuable reminder to those of us who care about the finished quality of our work. Really looking forward to seeing the mast stepped in the next episode. It will obviously be a real milestone for sure!

The whole boat is a work of art, but the beautifually crafted bronze lark sitting atop the mast really ties it together. You know, this channel was my first glimpse into boatbuilding after KZfaq randomly suggested one of your videos. After a year or more of binging this and every other similar channel , gaining every shred of knowledge I could, I've taken the plunge and will be restoring and refitting a 61 year old 30' Tahiti Ketch. If anyone is interested, the channel is SavingMaverick. There's nothing up there yet, as I'm still working out the logistics of getting the boat to my yard, but I plan on putting up plenty of content which should please any wooden boat enthusiasts. Cheers!

Thank you so much for continuing your videos about Skylark. I've been missing your updates. Really enjoyed the whole tender build for Arabella. You have inspired me to try my hand at small boatbuilding too, with a 10 ft design from Paul Gartside. This summer I completed the hull and everything that needs to be tabbed into the inside. Next year will finish with spars, sails, rudder and daggerboard. Mine will NOT be video'd. I really appreciate not only your amazing skills, but also your thoughtfulness in putting together these videos that explain so well all aspects of the boatbuilding art.

Super nice touch Bob! could/would you approximate time involved producing the mast head and sculpture? thank you really enjoy your artistry
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 7 ай бұрын
It is hard to know exactly how long it took to produce the bronze sculpture + mast cone. They where done over a years time. 3D modeling, clay sculpture, mold and wax pattern production, ceramic shell investment, kiln burn out and metal casting maybe 40 hours of hands on? However, they cannot be produced them in week as each step can be several days. Example, the patterns need to be dipped in the ceramic shell 10 time with over 24 hours to dry in between coats. The pouring of the bronze alone is about 4 hours for the furnace to melt the bronze (5-8 minutes to pour) Hope that helps! There is a running comment by artists that are asked "How long did it take you to make that painting, sculpture, drawing?" the answer is however old the artist is (a lifetime) Thanks for watching! Cheers, Bob

Love the video, but not sure if during the welding part and flashing lights might warrant a caution, it's about the 22:30 mark, It doesn't bother me at all and so not sure if that is the same strobing effect I see lots of warnings I just ignore, but figured I would mention it.

Who makes your sanding board?
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 7 ай бұрын
Hi Kathy, I used a donor tool from Harbor Freight, I modified the a auto body sander to produce an improved tool that was a flexible sander over the curves of the hull. Producing handles in black walnut not only makes the fairing board function better but it also becomes a beautiful comfortable tool. You can see the process in the S2-E27 video "Building a Fairing Tool" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKmFfNpymNiteas.html Thanks for watching. Cheers, Bob
