The broadcaster and Doctor Who fan Matthew Sweet travels to The University of Manchester - home of Delia Derbyshire's private collection of audio recordings - to learn more about the wider career and working methods of the woman who realised Ron Grainer's original theme to Doctor Who.

Many thanks for the upload. I bought the BBC Mono Radiophonic LP with the swirly pink cover when I was about 11 or 12, and never looked back. Those Radiophonic Workshop guys were out of this world, ingenious and creative with very little hardware. Delia pushed boundaries by quietly rebelling, a true visionary of the back corridors.

This is the third version (1970) of the original, slightly different, I remember being overwhelmed mystified by this "out of the ordinary music" even as a five year old??? a boy I knew (aged 7) had the record...so I became one of "Best Friends" He soon got wise to me, asking to play the record all the time instead of playing football of with I loved... Still do! and I still love this searing music...Well Done to the Late Great Ms Delia Derbyshire...rest in peace great woman.

4 by 4, a walk along the corridor, tape reels unraveled along the floor, a sticky joint out of place, that possible bum note!.its not quantized. its not perfect in pitch. But its Just a pure organic master piece.Thank you Delia Derbyshire. The innovator of Electro Techno Sculptress of Sound 7/7

Sampling uncovers a other-worldly dimension that can't be explained, no synth can top the strangeness of sampling.

@jmatzkin By todays standards those old synthesisers would sound beautiful - a very warm pure analog sound. Considering that Delia didn't like those synths when they first came out, I think she would have hated the compressed digital file sound of todays music.

The beautiful, talented genius is finally recognized by some of us who care. I want more of her work in my collection. How about on vinyl no less? Would be amazing. Now is the time.

Thank you very much for posting this. Fabulous. Hope a proper compilation album with the best of her various works is released sometime soon rather than the dribs and drabs of genius we pick up from various CDs now. With decent promotion from the BBC for once.

Where do you start with this wonderful heroine, her none conventional composing, inavational use of none musical apparatus, and her subliminal undertones... a pioneer and transitional mover in none traditional "electronic" music a truly intelligent-feminist icon...I salute you Delia Derbyshire

@annaannamusic noone seems to remember : among the fans there was also Roger Waters, and "one of these days" of Pink Floyd is a secret homage to this great lady
