Best track off the album

Imagine "Hey Scum!" with a "lovely voice" … takes a completely different turn there … :-S

Seph is no friend of distortion. It was the same with e.g. Barrel of a gun. The most experimental and hardest track of the album. Like it a lot. Great lyrics, too. To me, it is a shout of a condemned person to his judges, calling them out for their hypocricy and their hollow belief in their own truths, while in fact they are sinners themselves.

Although English is not my mother tongue, I love the song musically

I think this song is about guns in America and how people who use the guns especially those who have been involved in the shootings around the country, it's sort like what Bon Jovi did with Lower the Flag (where Jon names all the shootings) and Coldplay where they did a bit of satire version in Guns, that's what I believe.

I like the synths on this track. yep it`s anouther harsh look at humanity and suicide, a broken world where people are scum. I know the album is a hard listen but I have to hand it to them for doing a different album and addressing difficult subjects. not many bands would take this turn. I like the album but I do have to be in the mood for it.

Love it ! Its so different in its tune, like the effect on Daves voice, makes it as gritty as the very good lyrics

This song might be a single, it was mention on spirit wiki page, but was rejected (maybe because of suicide calling in lyrics. I dunno)

Dark, cynical and dirty but deep and truly - I´m repeating myself, but Martin is pure genius and Dave´s voice is very gritty and tasty. Depeche Mode always wanted to move forward and if sometimes they miss I really love them for always being themselves! Great reaction and greetings from Prague ;-)

That album is a rollercoaster!

This is one of those I mentioned in my previous comment about being one I do have in some playlists. I like the older reach back to industrial styling of the harsher elements combined soft and sometimes embracing 80s style synth use, and feel the music and vocals are the right delivery for the lyrics.... and yeah, love some of those lyrics. Can appreciate not being into the vocal distortion but, while for me it strikes me weirdly with Dave's voice I think it was the right choice for the song.

This song is very direct lyrically but the production is lacking which must be said of all albums post Ultra (not including Momento Mori though )...depeche had some wonderful moments along the way, that's for sure, but overall production has been lacking and instrumentation too 'cold and mechanical' would've loved Alan to have been involved in production but unfortunately he left (never to return ) Peace and Love from Australia!

Distortion here is to make the song angrier. For this one it goes good with tune I think. That’s strange but sometimes Scum helps me to keep going (because I’m quite phlegmatic). I like it. The next one, in my opinion, is the weakest - You Move. I still consider: it’s not their worst, quite simple, but atmospheric.

My humble opinion is that the biggest problem is the p r o d u c t I o n. ( Wrong producer) Lyrics & songs are still good, because... You know... Martin & nowadays also Dave are brilliant songwriters. The over-all sound-production is... Simple not good enough. And yeah - that saturation on Dave´s vocals is another page...

Hey Seph, maybe you remember my little DM Album Ranking (in your "Meaning of Love - Official Video" reaction). This album isn't actually bad, but VERY disappointing for many reasons. Therefore it's my least favourite! I also don't really understand the dieection they took in this album. :D This song is one of the few better ones (with Going Backwards and Cover Me) :) Also the text song (You Move) is in the category of "My Little Universe" for me...🙄 ...so I'm curious what you think. ^^

Def not my fave, but not as terrible as I remember it being, haha! I NEVER listen to this album, but in anticipation of your reactions, I gave it another go. Still not for me, and as a die hard Martin girl, it pains me to say that the two songs I like most on the album were written by Dave... they're still to come!

Why are you still surprised, Seph? It's already been said here that this is the worst album from DM. The next album is good. :)

To me, this is another lost opportunity, musically. As good as it is, with the right producer it could have been great. I agree, they should have backed off the distortion a little bit. If you don't like distorted voices don't listen to Skinny Puppy!

Scum and Fail are the best songs from this very poor album. Martins lyrics in Fail are expressed so persistenly and his vocals are so powerful to me, I think this is his best song since Home coming from Ultra. Cant wait for your reaction, Seph.

Daves oversaturated voice on almost every track on this album is what kills it for me. This is a half decent track otherwise.

Oh, these lyrics are so bad that I thought they surely must have been written by Dave. Nope. Martin wrote this mess. *sigh* What is good, though, is the placement of your microphone. 🎤 It's picking up your voice really well here. Definitely an improvement over yesterday's placement. Looking forward to a song that's worthy of some Seph singing.

To be honest this is a song I always skip. Depeche are still my favorite band. ❤

For me, this is the worst song in DM history. It‘s the bottom of the worst album in DM history. I never managed to listen to this song till the end. But hang in there, the best song by far is yet to come (Cover Me) and Memento Mori is a MUCH better album all way through anyway.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, and I think maybe the opinion of many others this album is Depeche Mode’s worst work. But the next album is much much better!! lol
