It is a time of unrest in 1920s Europa. The ashes from the first great war still darken the snow. The capitalistic city-state known simply as “The Factory”, which fueled the war with heavily armored mechs, has closed its doors, drawing the attention of several nearby countries.
Scythe is an engine-building game set in an alternate-history 1920s period. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valor. In Scythe, each player represents a character from one of five factions of Eastern Europe who are attempting to earn their fortune and claim their faction's stake in the land around the mysterious Factory. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate monstrous mechs.
Each player begins the game with different resources (power, coins, combat acumen, and popularity), a different starting location, and a hidden goal. Starting positions are specially calibrated to contribute to each faction’s uniqueness and the asymmetrical nature of the game (each faction always starts in the same place).
Scythe gives players almost complete control over their fate. Other than each player’s individual hidden objective card, the only elements of luck or variability are “encounter” cards that players will draw as they interact with the citizens of newly explored lands. Each encounter card provides the player with several options, allowing them to mitigate the luck of the draw through their selection. Combat is also driven by choices, not luck or randomness.
Scythe uses a streamlined action-selection mechanism (no rounds or phases) to keep gameplay moving at a brisk pace and reduce downtime between turns. While there is plenty of direct conflict for players who seek it, there is no player elimination.
Every part of Scythe has an aspect of engine-building to it. Players can upgrade actions to become more efficient, build structures that improve their position on the map, enlist new recruits to enhance character abilities, activate mechs to deter opponents from invading, and expand their borders to reap greater types and quantities of resources. These engine-building aspects create a sense of momentum and progress throughout the game. The order in which players improve their engine adds to the unique feel of each game, even when playing one faction multiple times.

this is absolutely amazing :) thank you, this explains a lot. I played the game for the first time last week and I won but do to the fact that I was able to get a lot of bottom row actions whilst others wasn't, but without a real plan. luckily I did the right things. Like some early upgrades then workers and inlists. I guess the patriotic mat was also strong, it kinda made sense for me at the beginning but with all that new informations I would play totally different then in my first session.

I like playing Scythe a lot, but the balance is way off. Each of the bottom row actions needs to be a valid path to victory in many situations; as it is, players build strategies around actively avoiding certain bottom row actions. Please tell me some smart, enterprising person has developed a "rebalanced" Scythe (perhaps with a modified map?) that does a better job of allowing much more variant high-level play.

Exactly. They need to add bidding for the combinations. You can do it yourself in local games, but online games need it too.

Yes, I think that was a post-hoc attempt at rebalancing. Rus-Viet is pretty powerful otherwise

Anyone can tell why speed is most common #1 mech? U can't leave your starting zone anyway, so having increased speed doesnt make sense to me.
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Жыл бұрын
It depends on the faction. Albion, for example, doesn't need to cross a river to get out of their base, and there are other ways to get out with other abilities. Tune in to 52:10 in the video to hear FOMOF's thoughts - he's more knowledgeable than me!

@@LegendaryTactics I did watch it, maybe didnt fully understand. Like Crimea, u get speed while not able to leave zone, is it bcs u have metal and u go for early double mech? I always thought leaving starting zone is your main goal in early game.

Yes, there should be a CC button at the top right which will toggle them on and off. If that doesn't work, click on the little gear (settings) and look for 'Captions'

We’ve been playing for a long period of time, but I still have a question about a little moment, that seems to be unclear for me. Is mecha able to drop workers during it’s moving process? Like if I use “fabric card movement” and +1 ability, can I drop first worker after first step, second worker after second and then just make last step, after what I ll control 3 more territories? And added question - can Make a reverse movement? Like “collect” all workers through the long mecha movement with only this one mecha move?

Am I the only one who finds it incredibly sad that, what is supposed to be a home experience, around the table with your friends, is so often taken these days online, dismantled, overanalyzed and optimized to become almost unrecognizable and hypercompetitive? The first time I saw this happen, with Tzolk'in, it almost ruined the game for me. The gold to food strategy was so overpowered it almost became unavoidable. Thankfully I'm part of a group who puts fun above winning and doing the same boring thing all the time is just not our cup of tea. But it's still sad that good boardgames can be broken so easily online. I'd advise people who enjoy the hobby to stay away from that sort of thing. It's not worth ruining a game for your group just to beat your friends with strategies you didn't think of yourself.

It's funny, but even way back when I started playing war games as a teenager, I was always fascinated most by the strategy articles that taught you how to play well. For me, it depends on the game. Some games are just for fun, as you describe, and other games are deep and invite analysis that can make for some fascinating viewing/reading. I used to love reading strategy articles in magazines when I was younger, and now KZfaq is my forum of choice. But I hear where you're coming from, and I agree to some extent.

I don't find it sad. I think the key to having fun on the tabletop is finding a group that plays the same way you play. For me, the only fun of games is the hyper strategic goal of winning the game, or even more importantly playing the optimum way independent of winning or losing. When you and I play together, we might not have fun, but when I play with some hyper competitive people, we have fun trash talking and fighting and throwing tantrums for the love of the game. Like when Patrick mahomes broke down crying because he lost. That's fun for my group because it brings more satisfaction to winning.

On the contrary i feel happy that some modern board games can rise above the casual tier and reach the level of competitive strategy where it can engage minds to come up with different tactics and strategies

Why be sad that you buy a game, and then it is so interesting you end up even reading strategy about it. Do you never solve chess puzzles when playing chess because it ruins the experience? I personally do not enjoy playing "casually". I am competitive. And I have tried not winning and everyone hates me. It just ends up as me being the final boss and everyone is a little more aggressive towards me and politics come in play and I never win. But I play my best. And so everyone enjoys! Idc about winning. Just playing the best I can and improving.
