SD-WAN is DEAD: Thanks to SASE, SSE and Multi Cloud Networking

If we go back just three years, SD-WAN was one of the most exciting trends in enterprise networking. With plenty of VC capital pouring into SD-WAN startups at the time. It seemed SD-WAN was making networking cool again. Today, you’d be hard-pressed to find any technology innovation as pure-play SD-WAN startups are mostly non-existent. The question is what happened here, and if SD-WAN is already dead.

Hi, I started typing this response before the end of the video, by the end you'd clarified that SD-WAN is still relevant 😃. In my experience SSE itself is not the whole solution. Yes you could have a tunnel and send everything to a SASE provider but it would probably be inefficient in routing to some cloud and to your on-prem plus the SASE provider is now an operational risk for all your connectivity - some things mine not work or there's an issue some days and you can't get the support you need. Better to deploy SD-WAN edge and application route traffic to SASE, local break-out (eg. M365) or internally as required. You stay in control plus get analytics, etc. As with many cloud and core network services, they don't want to support the edge - its too difficult, hence why we still need a separate edge and it might as well be intelligent SD-WAN.

Thanks for your comment. First, SSE = SASE - SD-WAN. Secondly, SD-WAN was all about simplifying the branch/WAN networking where most of the solution value-add was tied to “affordable connectivity” and app-aware networking (ala QoS). Today, with accelerated app migration to public clouds and a remote workforce, the standalone solution value-add isn’t compelling anymore. Another way to look at it, in hindsight, is that SD-WAN was simply a transitional technology only to be later subsumed by Multi-Cloud Networking Solutions.
