I just finished watching "Barbie" and I don't think it was trying to "stick it" to men. It was trying to reflect (in reverse) just what women have to go through living in a man's world. Ryan was really my main reason for watching it.😍❤️

@@androow1983 Yes, in a different way. There's toxic masculinity and a society that expects men to behave in a certain way. Both sexes are oppressed in their own way, and that's what I believe the film was trying to show.
@androow1983
@androow1983 2 ай бұрын
@@jademusic1211 Then the film was just saying that the only thing men go through is depending on women, when men go through everything the women went through in the movie. You don't have to include it in the movie, but I don't like how they make it seem like men depending on women or else they feel invalidated is the only thing they go through.

Exactly, I think alot of people misunderstand what it's trying to say, it's not "manhating" or anything, it's just showing the effects of the patriarchy and societal rules that both men and women suffer from
@jademusic1211
@jademusic1211 2 ай бұрын
@@androow1983 No, that's looking at it all too simplistically to say that the movie is suggesting that men depending on women and needing to be validated by them is all they go through.😕 You have to remember that the film was a satire poking fun at gender roles and expectations by flipping it on its head, while also showing how each gender is equally oppressed by these expectations..not to mention that Ken's role literally represented how he's treated in Barbie's world..as an accessory, and that that was wrong. In the end, Barbie realizes this and tells Ken that he's enough just as he is. He doesn't need her to be special or feel validated. He is "Kenough". 🙂

Barbie was pretty generous to men for being a very outwardly feminist film. Ken was, at worst, portrayed as misguided as a result of under appreciation and necessitated emotional suppression from a “young age” (i.e., while in Barbieland) like a lot of young boys and men are in the real world. Goslings heavily dramatized portrayal of Ken was in line with how emotionally repressed men can fall into the alt-right pipeline and patriarchal structures because we are often meant to feel that we have no one to go to but ourselves. We wind up trapped and confused like Ken because we’ve never been allowed to be vulnerable. The movie was just as much for men as it was for women imo.

I just rewatched Blade Runner 2049 yesterday with my gf. I haven't actually watched any other Gosling movie, to my shame, but one thing stood out to me from that movie very clearly: Gosling depicts more with a single silent and seemingly expressionless shot than some actors can in whole movies. He's a masterclass in subtlety and nuance, the way he's able to create a sort of "empty space" or subtext with careful expressionlessness is just... absolutely incredible. This wouldn't work in something like theatre, Gosling was made for the silver screen.

It was about the female experience. I don't think that the feminist tones were too strong/overbearing and I actually really enjoyed the movie, but there were many many instances when the intelligence/empowerment of women came at the expense of men or just making men seem stupid. The only way that it "appealed to the male experience was by teaching Ken to be okay with being alone, and not finding his identity in something else. "I am kenough". Which in reality is not something men actually want. (edit) Meaning they want something to be a part of and a way to prove themselves, although being told that we are enough is a comforting sentiment.

@@sder Yeah, after watching it a couple times, the way I see it, the whole movie is a condemnation of any system in which one gender (ANY gender) is elevated and the other oppressed. The female-dominated "Barbieland" wasn't meant to portray the ideal society, but rather depict an obvious reversal of our patriarchal society to show people that this system is damaging to literally everyone, not just women. There's probably something about the fact that Barbie (who could be seen as the dominating "man" figure in this reversal) isn't allowed to show any signs of imperfection in her appearance or thoughts (the flat feet, "do you guys ever think about death?", etc.) and literally only shows emotion at the end, where she cries for the first time and realizes how beautiful it is to be human. Doesn't this kind of sound like how men are shat on for being vulnerable in our society, and feel like they have to maintain a certain image/status? The part where the president tells a Ken that she might let men into some lower circuit courts (but not the Supreme Court) is a reflection on how any advances women are allowed in political spheres/public spaces have to be fought really hard for, and even then, they're only offered an inch here and there to appease them (I really hope I don't have to drop a bunch of statistics here; they're easy to find). The way you and many others felt watching a female-dominated society (rightfully uncomfortable!!) is meant to shed light on the fact that it IS uncomfortable to have one gender so favored --- yet if if was reversed and the Barbie's were men and the Ken's were all women, it really wouldn't upset most people since that's our standard in film and media (and real life). It's SUPPOSED to be icky to have such an imbalance. It just only feels icky to some when it's women and not men in charge, because we're used to the MCs, dialogue-having characters, presidents, and strong personalities all being men (watch any movie that came out before the 70s...). The "little girls" you mention who dream of a woman-dominated society... isn't that the whole idea of Ken? Like you said, Ken just wants the Barbies how it feels to be inferior, and to gain an equal position in their world. It's not wrong for Ken to feel hurt at being so mistreated, just like it isn't surprising for girls to feel the same way in the real world. Equality is the goal, not a power gap. Also, at the end, Barbie tells Ken he doesn't need her validation to be worth something, which I thought was a generally empowering message no matter who you are!! :D Sorry for the essay comment ;P Just some thoughts!! Ryan killed this role and was a brilliant and complex character, as usual. Love that guy. Thanks for the video; I've found some new things to watch :)

@sder people are VERY mad about your take on Barbie lmfao. It's quite funny to me seeing how many people are mentioning it, on a video mainly around Ryan gosling, they are outraged you wanted to see more of Ryan Rosling in a WOMAN MOVIE! Like yeah, I think it's pretty clear from the video that you only watched that film because you enjoy him as an actor, otherwise it wouldn't be your thing.

You must be a girl because as a guy i disagree Barbieland is a parody of the real manly life. It is more a parody of Matrix. We as guys show imperfections all the time by using sarcastic jokes, we talk about death and other deeper subjects because that's normal. How can be the Barbieland the mirror if the dolls learn about the real world and then the Barbieland becomes a parody of patriarchy. @@littleglitch4324

The Place Beyond The Pines has to be my #1. I know it’s so cliche to see parallels between me (a 20 some year old man) and ryan gosling, but as the years go by the parallels continue to pile up even when i don’t mean for them to. It’s just very odd.

Why can't anyone say that, including women? I have not seen the movie but focusing more on Ken is different then focusing solely on him. I really like the concepts and issues the film touches on and I do plan on watching it soon. As a man, I hope to learn a lot about the human experience for both genders. Maybe the movie could have focused more on Ken to get it's message across? He seems integral to the plot, so maybe if he was not showcased or focused on enough, the movie could struggle to get it's point across. Maybe that's not true, idk, but at face value that comment does not seem bad. Depends his intentions with that statement maybe?

I think your place beyond the pines is many of our Barbie's. As a woman, I have no idea how some of the nuance and gritty-ness of that film relates to someone like yourself, only you, and I'm sure many other men and boys can appreciate that relationship between dad and son, more than any woman could. Me personally Barbie is that for me, it relates to my experiences and feelings, so heavily that you naming it "eye rolling" was quite a left of field take I wasn't expecting. And the description of the plot really missed the mark. I appreciate your views, but we differ and so it seems do others too.
@ej1709

I agree. The point of the movie went completely over his head which is a little disappointing considering he made a whole video about movie reviews. I personally think a lot of it comes down to lack of film literacy, difference of taste, and not having an open mind towards the female experience. Calling the script eye rolling and wishing it was a movie solely about the kens just proves he didn’t get it. His description had me wondering if we even watched the same movie.
@namsr
@namsr 8 ай бұрын
I completely agree with you. He missed the point of the film and genuinely sounds scared of a fictional fantasy world where women are in control, even though Barbie criticises that world too. It seems like an insecure reading of the film, like he's taken something personally. The rest of the video is good though, but maybe he needs more cinema literacy when it comes to textual analysis of films . Good start.
@lexi_hana

@@ej1709 totally, like I don't even know what version he was seeing. Maybe it emotionally effected him enough to think like "poor Ken, he deserves more" which is the psychological aim of the movie, but he just missed the whole, making a connection between Ken's experience and how women are treated in the real world, which is where this take becomes ignorantly misogynistic

The most versatile actor of Hollywood. I have already watched all his movies multiple times and can still watch them again. It's not a joke to be dedicated to an artform right from childhood to the present and future ofcourse. He is not only a superb actor but a wonderful human being. Also last but not the least he is a trained dancer and musician. He is an unconventional actor who doesn't participate in the rat race of stardom and dares to take a break from a fruitful career just to follow a passion be it music or anything else. He never hesitates to laugh on himself and I love when he blushes with embarrassment specially while watching his childhood dancing moves. Like millions of people I too love Ryan Gosling. It’s incredible how many men misunderstand the barbie movie when it is one of the most simple depictions of the feminist movements I have seen… „I wish the movie was dedicated to him [Ryan Gosling]“ are you kidding me? „A world dominated by women is unfortunately a dream of so many young girls“ hello? What young girls dream of is a world where they’re treated equal and don’t have to worry about their safety when stepping outside. It honestly scares me that men watched this movie and instead of taking the message of the movie as „gender inequality isn’t fun any way around“ taking it as „women want to dominate and belittle men“. I personally don’t think it was that hard to understand that Greta Gerwig was not depicting her dream world. She simply switched gender roles to point out the many situations that half our population actually has to face on a daily basis. And you still didn’t get it.

As a man, i agree with you fully! I will say most men who think like he does are not to blame. Many men have been fed false news about this movie. Also some women (like my sister lol) have told me since the movie's release that it was made to put down men and it shows how men suck and all that. I think the movie was great and got it's very important and beautiful message off quite well. I just wanted to tell you that with so much news revolving around the kind of feminism that puts men down and not the actual good feminism, it is quite understandable why many men feel like that. Before seeing the movie, I thought it was all about putting down men as frankly that was all I heard about it, so my thoughts before seeing it made me look like a douchy annoying man who is anti-Barbie because it is feminist or whatever. It would be very easy for most people to have viewed me like that, but in reality it was not the case and I just needed to be educated. Hope this adds perspective and shows you that not all anti-Barbie men are complete douches.

i feel like a lot of men misunderstood barbie land in the same way. the whole point is to show men how the world has felt for women our entire lives. it’s a world ran by women juxtaposed with a world ran by men. both are bad, and both are supposed to be seen as bad, but obviously women gravitate toward barbie land the way that ken gravitated to the real world. it’s supposed to be at the expense of men, so that it can show them how the real world is at the expense of women.
