Great walkthrough! It's awesome to see this kind of development attention and integration finally making it to Mac/iOS. I just used the iPad app over the weekend with my 705 and it was pretty awesome, I highly recommend it.

I really like this software for controlling the 7610. It’s now my main view when using the rig at home. I found having two monitors is nice to display all the windows. One thing I’ve done is pipe the output audio to a virtual audio cable (AB-Audio) so I can then pull it into Apple Logic Pro which lets me do audio processing including eliminating noise. Your can literally make it sound like an FM broadcast station. Huge difference.

Wow. I downloaded SDR-Control last night and fired up FT8 for my first time. Made QSLs from Orlando with Japan, Spain, Germany, France, Ecuador, Hawaii and many more. WOW! 3-5am was amazing for propagation last night. Thanks for the recommendation. Beats running the Icom remote software in a virtual machine in VMware...on my Mac.

OK....Any idea why the waterfall will not work on SDR-Control with my 7610? Everything else works...just no waterfall at all. I am on my local LAN and it is the only feature not working.

Thanks for the review - well done as always. I heard about the app about a week ago when a brief overview appeared in my KZfaq feed. I’m a Windows PC user in my home and shack, but have experience with Mac OS and iOS as well. Like you, enjoy them all. I fell into the sweet spot for the iOS version on an iPad. I have had a 7610 since it was introduced, and have had a shiny new 9700 for the last few weeks. I had been looking at buying a Surface tablet and either RS-BA1 software, or putting my Windows ham radio software on the tablet with an IC-706 when I’m operating from our camp in Maine this summer.. but this was the perfect solution, having the radios and the iPad with nothing to buy but the iOS software. It works great on my LAN, and really had some fun this week doing some SSB and FT8 while on an overnight trip. I was definitely in the “sweet spot” for this software!

I had purchased the IOS software some time ago but had not been using it. I just saw your video and decided to grab the iPad while watching and I was making FT8 contacts quickly. After seeing the Mac OS demo I just might go and D/L it now. Marcus does write great software. I have had his FlexRadio software for a while and love it as well. Thanks for the video. Ed

SDR-Control for iOS/Mac is fantastic software written by a very talented software developer Marcus, DL8MRE. Marcus, as mentioned in the video, wrote SmartSDR iOS for the Flex 6000 series released in August 2016 then SmartSDR MAC in Sept 2020. Now Icom users can enjoy the benefits of this fantastic software. Josh, you did a great job as always presenting SDR-Control and it was fun watching you dance around the sensitive issues involved! 73, Mike

I plan to use the iPad's screen recording capability to 'watch' the SDR-Control waterfall screen while tuned to some HT simplex frequency. Then I can move around with the HT and record the signal strength readings for various distances, antennas etc. My take at HRCC's signal strength tests from the park.

Glad you did this video. I’m one of those Mac only General class hams, and I’ve struggled mightily over the years to find things that work. I have both the MacOS and iPad apps. I also have a Win10 Dell XPS for ham stuff and a Pi400 configured for ham work. All have a different nuance behind them. I do find the SDR-Control UI to be very polished and friendly. Like you I do miss some of the items from WSJT-X and GridTracker that I think would be a good overall add. Logging between the additions is very different. On the desktop you can configure uploads to LOTW, eQSL, Clublog, etc but on the iPad you cannot.

I would love a proper SDR app for iOS to connect to generic SDR servers. I use an iPad Pro, but always keep a couple Linux laptops around for my ham stuff. For iPad, I've used the "SDR Receiver" app connected to rtl_tcp and a cheap rtl-sdr dongle, but there's so much left to be desired, like a proper waterfall and scope. Otherwise, it's a solid app if you just want to monitor frequencies without a lot of frills. There's only 1-2 other options and they haven't been updated in years.

Great video...I've used SDR Control since its release, but I still come back to this video all the time to learn more details about its features. Can you please expand a little more on how I can use the programs CAT controls to use WSJT-X on my mac? What should I set the CAT settings in SDR Control and do I need to do anything with the "External Software" settings under preferences? Thank you.

The M1 Macbook Pro will make a great laptop for mobile operating. It's one of the fastest, best built, best battery life laptops I've ever used. But the software support is weak for now. I'm glad that new things like SDR Control are coming along, although I have the unsupported 7300, so can't make use of it. Similarly, the ipad + the official keyboard case works well for logging. HamRS is easy to use, and works great. Tiny footprint, and the ipad fits in a backpack well.

As a Mac and IOS user for many years, I just accept that there is not the same abundance of Ham orientated software for people like me. For me the trade off is worth it! What is a tragedy is that Elecraft manage to interface to Windows and Mac OS for s/w updates. Yaesu, Kenwood and ICOM don't (to the best of my knowledge). Why? Maybe they think we aren't worth it. I own Yaesu and they have made strives forward to simplify upgrades BUT I need a P.C. This software is truly a giant leap forward and almost worth buying ICOM compatible transceivers for. Great vid ☺

Great video, thanks ! There is also an iPhone specific version as well. It probably came out after you recorded this. And again, you have to purchase it separately from the iPad and/or Mac apps. The iPhone app is also pretty great. It's amazing what he can easily useably pack onto a iPhone screen. As you said, they are based on the Flex apps which are far FAR better than the actual Flex SSDR software. These apps feel very familiar after using the Flex versions. For me, the prices are fine. People who put this much work into something need to be able to justify their efforts. If we're not willing to pay for them, why should they be willing to develop them ?

So interestingly enough I just learned you can do something similar to this using the WFview application. It will act like a server in the same way the 705 and 7610 do. Simply put, you can use a Windows or Mac host computer connected to the 7300 via USB running WFview and point the iPad or iPhone applications used here, to the WFview server and it'll work remotely or locally as if it were setup like the 705, 7610 and 9700. Now I need to see if it will work with the macOS app but I can't seem to find screenshots of the setup screens on the website. I don't own a MacBook so I can't try it. In theory it should work the same way. Thanks for the video.

I was overly cautious about this software when I first heard of it on facebook. It sounded too good to be true. Also there was a bad review that I assume was removed during an update. Which is understandable, if you only have two reviews and one is 5 stars and the other is 1 star. Then one guy and only one guy was posting how amazing the software was. It all felt like a scam. But as a 98% mac user, I had to try it. I got both the ipad and mac software. It needs a lot of work. But it’s absolutely worth the price even without the final touches. It’s not a scam. A guy (or team) was really dedicated to get this out to a somewhat small group. You have both use apple products and own a newer icom. Somewhat small market. But the 705 is everywhere! I’d love to see how many 705s are out in the wild right now. So for anyone on the fence. This is for real. And I guess the high price tag balances out the “its too good to be true” aspect. Lol

Josh... completely off topic... someone posted a video called "What Amateur Radio is REALLY about , and who doesn't want YOU to know it"... please, PLEASE do a response video... not only do I respect your opinion, but I think you'd make a highly entertaining video !

I don’t think I’m going to give that person the oxygen. I don’t see any experimenters harmed by there being hobbyists on the bands, so the argument is a non-starter for me. It’s a narrow and pedantic argument too. I don’t understand who it aims to serve.

There are apparently limitations around the USB speed on the 7300 - in fact the RS-BA1 software's waterfall is incredibly slow due to these reasons

is the application better than the original one from Icom? it is probably not for Mac OS. HAM radio is very fragmented as far as software is concerned. I like to go to nature on the WWFF and until today I have not found a LOG that would support this activity one hundred percent. the same Icom, a global manufacturer and its software is not for Mac OS. Also, a lot of very good programs that are only for windows are now forcing me to buy another laptop with windows for the MacBook Pro M2, which is a terrible idea. The LOGs that support WWFF for change do not support anything else, so the connection made from nature is not counted among my normal ones from home and I cannot see all the connections together, thus have an overview of countries, distances and fulfillment of diplomas, etc. :(

SDRControl is awesome. It works well with Mac and was created by a developer who has a track record of developing on Macs.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thanks for the information, unfortunately I can't download the demo or trial version, so I can't try it before buying. Which is a shame considering its price. How much bandwidth can be displayed when the Icom TCVR is connected? Can individual frequencies be saved and create your own list? Thank you very much for the information.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse My point is SDR software makes most sense when you use hardware that is not HAM radios that was designed to be used on their own, without any computer. Call this ICOM-Control and I have no problem. I love ICOM products, but again, they are designed to be used standalone. But, I have a Hacker One SDR hardware (and several other cheap SDR dongles), and yes a Mac, and it is hard to find good software. Sticking to Windows or even Linux makes HAM radio sound old, not modern, dusty, and the usual crowd of 'sad Hams'. Just my point of view. By the way, I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse Fair enough. Then, again, title your post "SDR-Control: Big Win for MacOS and iOS ICOM Ham Radio". I run a search for "SDR Software Mac OS X" and google sent me a link to your post... if I had seen ICOM in the title I would have ignored and not commented here...

The term is “QSOs” - not “Q’s” or wtf you’re saying. If you’re going to act like some kind if self-proclaimed “ham teacher god”, you should at least use the correct terminology that’s been in use almost since the inception of radio communications……instead of just making up your own crap you’re pulling out of your fourth point of contact.

I don't think I came across like an asshole in the video, so why are you acting like one in the comments? Where did I *claim* to be a ham teacher god? Take a minute, pretend I am real human, and an actual ham trying to help people and maybe try again? Perhaps hug your dog? You're projecting anger for no reason here.
