depends on past or current tech.... these days they have instruments that take a continuous series of photos of the target, match the outline to a library of images, then aim for the part of the aircraft designated in the setup of the missile. this means flares mean little as they dont match a shape.... they can literally aim for the centre hit, cockpit or engine etc. in the past it was, in one example, IR receivers in a circle around a central point.... if more IR heat was on one side, its steered towards that side until there was no heat, meaning it was aimed.... so obviously the missile wobbled as it steered, bad for range and precision. fascinating.

Adrian Kenny I've been as well. I'd be glad to share what i'be found out with you. I'll use the AIM-9 as my example here. The AIM-9's seeker consists of several parts; the gimbal, the detector, the reticle, the primary reflector, the secondary reflector and the IR filter. The IR radiation is passed through the filter which is used for rejecting unwanted frequencies within the spectral response range of the detector. The radiation is then directed into the primary mirror where it is reflected to focus on the secondary mirror. This in essence creates a cassegrain telescope. By driving a reticle - a chopped disk with transparent and opaque sections - in front of the detector through the usage of a motor you chop whatever image you receive into voltage pulses whose width corresponds to the distance from the center of the reticle. Alternatively, the secondary mirror can be offset and driven to sweep the image across a static reticle. Either way, by using a reference signal that is proportional to the angle of the motor and begins at the same time the motor starts, you can compare where you detect your IR source in time to where your motor is at a given point. This is your angular error, and since you know the angular error from the seeker LOS, and its magnitude, you can move your gimbal to constantly point at the target. Guidance is accomplished using some form of proportional navigation where the missile maneuvers in attempt to keep the target at the same bearing and elevation relative to the longitudinal axis of the missile. To execute this simply, take the voltage used to drive the X gimbal servo and multiply that by some constant (in ProNav equation, N, or usually 3) and do the same for Y. All of this of course relies on the system not rolling in flight, something which is accomplished using air-driven gyroscopes on the rear fin assembly of the missile. Finally, by installing a rocket motor, proximity fuse, and warhead you have a slightly simpler sidewinder. While not all of this information may be correct, it's the best I've been able to piece together. Hope this helps.

@@tu-95turbopropstrategicbom55 a spinning mask called reticle is prone to laser jamming, modern heat seeker missiles use digital imaging technology.......reticle based seekers used single color seekers during 70's and 80's.......and later two color seekers to offer improved false alarm rejection and distinguish between target and flares

Прикольно! Правда, анимация ракеты ПЗРК с ИК-ГСН показана неправильно. А вообще, сначала надо сделать видео, где достаточно подробно показано как работает ракета ПЗРК. Тогда и это видео станет более понятное обычному человеку! ЗЫ И ещё вопрос? Как эта система работает против Вербы? Там целых 3 спектральных канала, а у этой системы наверное меньше, значит ракета Вербы может производить селектирование сигналов, и просто не обращать внимания на эту цветомузыку!

What? That won’t work - it would require too much energy. What you need is a directional infrared countermeasure.

It's all good and all until you realise that modern seakers utilise image recognition to counter flares, which kinda defeats its purpose sadly since it's not necerely looking for a heat source but rather an image as well, Aim 9X, and R73 are examples, it's the only effective way to counter stealth technologies and countermeasures with current tech.

intresting animation but i dont think its gonna work the way video shows... there is no Manpad missle folllowing infrared radiation.They all use this radiation to predict planes accelaration and place the missle in collision course with the plane..

Yes! You quite right. This movie only shows that we have some effect on the missile guidance system. Installing the generators around the real engine we create some images in the same spectrum but with the high contrast. Speaking about manpads of 1-2-3 generations they can guide only ONE target, so in any case missile have to choose the right object to calculate the future trajectory of the aircraft and then hit it. In our case missile can't select the right one because we move the placement where image appear. And during the time we place them in the specific low around the real engine. On practice we have some fluctuation of the line of sight and as the result wrong trajectory of the missile.

To calculate the trajectory you need altitude and speed of the aircraft.......will that manpad detects the speed and altitude of aprroching aircraft?? No......it just has a infrared seeker that locks and follows
