From a “gringo”. Nailed it. You are the greatest inspiration for me continuing my my quest. I’m 69 yrs. old and losing my brains to age and decided I need to do something to exercise my noodle. I’m one year into this listening to various Spanish lessons on Spotify as I take my walks. Got to say I was thinking I was going to quit until I found my inspiration. Your explanations really get to the nitty and gritty of this endeavor. God you’re good. What fun!! You crack me up and I’m learning too!! What a teacher! If only I hand someone like you a long time ago, I would’ve been there already. You my gringo friend, have the gift. You are a natural communicator. This video here is nirvana of the Spanish teachings on you tube. I’m sure you dug deep into the subject to put this one out there for us. I’m not quitting now, thanks to your passion. Just had to gush after this one.

Greetings sir, remember that it does not matter if you do not understand stuff like this now. To put my words into action, I myself learnt English foreignly, I did not study anything, just was apart of the language and eventually became fluent at it, learning zero rules. It comes naturally to me what or how to write\speak in English.

You are special, gifted person Aleksas. My step-father used to say the same thing: "Just expose yourself to the language and you'll pick it up!" I can tell you that I've been studying Spanish for decades and have listened to more of that language in TV, movies and music than it is possible to watch or listen to in a year. I am still terrible. Sure I can speak like a 6 year old to my Spanish girlfriend and read the language reasonably well... but everything I can do is as a result of direct study. Almost nothing was picked up easily through exposure other than pronunciation.

@@almor2445 I can't believe you. Or, better put, I don't want to believe you. You must be underestimating yourself, I know that you can talk about politics, or history, or whatever that you love crazily. If not try telling your gf that, from now on, you'll be speaking only Spanish with her. Try turning that little voice in your head to Spanish mode. I know that you can do this. Don't give up! Btw, I'm also a native Spanish speaker uwu. That last trick worked for me (as well as watching obsessively the same English yt videos over and over).

@@almor2445 You're wrong, 'cuz I also became kinda fluent in English by watching KZfaq videos, listening to songs, etc..... , When I started learning it, after about four months I started watching every thing I would regularly watch in Arabic in English, and now after two years, I can tell that I became kinda fluent by studying the language but more importantly by making the language a big part of my daily life.

That’s precisely the point of this video xD There’s only really 1 (maybe 2) uses of se in Spanish. All these “other uses” come from the way we translate completely normal and regular Spanish phrases into _English._

Hi! I live in Spain myself and I'll honestly tell you that even us struggle with "se". It can be used in SO many ways we're afraid of it when we have to "analizar sintácticamente" a sentence. Next year is my last high school year (2° de Bachiller/12 grade) and I know my friends and I will work our asses off to finally understand it. Thank you for making this video!

The Spanish Dude, analizar sintácticamente o la sintaxis consiste en averiguar por qué elementos está formada una frase: María se peina el pelo: María-Sujeto/Se-Complemento Indirecto/Peina-Verbo/El pelo-Complemento Directo. Analizar sintácticamente consists in finding out what elements a sentece is made of: verb/subject/direct object/etc.

@@cheese64 learning about your own language is not only interesting, but extremelyyy helpful when learning another language's grammatical system or teaching your native language. As a bilingual speaker now of Spanish, I can say that learning English grammar helped me make sense of Spanish as I took English grammar for granted since it is my native language.

Love this video. I finished “paying the price” memorizing the important basic spanish grammar such as conjugating verbs; DOP, IOP, etc. Watching the “se” video was down right fun. I am 78 years old and when we invite friends over who are still “with us” mentally and are still “sharp” with insight and humor, we shown this video even if they not interested in learning spanish. We all laugh throughout the video enjoying your funny personality. As for me, I “got it” relating to the use of “se”. Thanks...please do not change your approach to learning spanish grammar.

Dude, your videos have helped me so much. I can't count the number of times I've heard you say something only to think, 'Why the hell didn't they say this in Spanish class?!' Even if I don't have a massive vocab at this point, your videos have helped me clue in on tons of stuff I see in everyday Spanish that used to trip me up, and now I can think back to one of your lessons and think 'ah yes, it's this way because ____________' So helpful! wow, i have studied spanish for a while and ive always seen this sign on a building that said "se habla español" and i knew what it was saying but never understood the grammer behing why there is a se there. it was pretty cool seeing you use this in the video

Great videos. I've watched this one twice now. Is there an error at 18:27, or am I not understanding this like I think I am? "Se los lava cada día" Lava is conjugated in the third person singular--he/she/you(formal-Ud). But you are saying one translation can be "you both wash them for yourselves (formal) . Wouldn't that be "Se los lavan..."?

"se habla español" is a "pasive se" or "pasiva refleja" in spanish because habla is the verb and español is the subject. the subject is what is called in spanish "sujeto paciente" that is why it is not reflexive SE. "se baila mucho en cuba" is "impersonal se" because baila is the verb, and we can't find the subject in the written sentence, and if i remember correctly "se baila" is called "nucleo verbal impersonal)

Thanks for the video and all your videos for that matter. Two years ago I took a trip to the Dominican Republic, went on a tour where I happened to be the only Non-Spanish speaker. The trip was fun but not understanding, flat sucked. I came back and enrolled in a Spanish class and I am just about to move on to Intermediate (4th course) My teachers are from different regions in South America. Your videos are a perfect addition to my learning because sometimes they don't understand why us English speakers don't understand a concept. They are awesome, your videos are great and between the two, this is a lot of fun. We usually have a glass of wine or a shot of tequila near the end of our two hour class to keep it fun. Like you said, it can look hard and it is but if you take a deep breath and plow through, it will come. Thanks for being a part of my learning. Oh, I wear your shirts to class.

Spanish rules and uses theory are way beyond complicated and in reality we all native Spanish, speak it without even understand the actual WHY.... but, who cares if we understand it or not... All we need is to talk right? and we all have been doing it for years without any problems... Until we decide to teach it... can someone please explain "se me olvide? what is se me? or "se te va a parar", why is it SE or what is the SE in this sentences that changes the sentences.

I'm not entirely sure of the logic behind it but this structure is often called the 'accidental se', as the 'se' is used to convey the fact that a certain event happened unintentionally. You do this by using 'se' then an indirect object pronoun followed by the conjugated form of the verb. In your example, 'se me olvidé', the 'se' shows that it was an accident, the 'me' indicates that you were the one who forgot it and then 'olvidé', the preterite tense conjugation of 'olvidar' in the 'yo' form. This as a result translates to 'I forgot', but makes it clearer that it was accidental. This principal can be applied to almost everything but if you needed to use a noun to say that you'd forgotten something in particular, the conjugated verb must agree with it. For example, 'se me perdieron las llaves' translates to 'I lost my keys (by accident)', but 'perdieron' has to be used as 'las llaves' is a plural noun. I'm sorry this answer is as long as it is but I hope it helps! 😊

I guess it's "se me olvidó" (not olvidé) which means "I forgot" Here are some example sentenses which have the same structure. Se me olvidó traer el libro. ( I forgot to bring the book.) Se me perdió mi nuevo celular. ( I lost my new cell phone.) No se me ocurre ninguna buena idea. (I can't think of any good idea.) Se me cayó el lápiz. (I dropped the pencil.)If you already know about passive ''se'', you would easily understand "Se cayó el lápiz" which literally means "The pencil was dropped." and if this event happened to you, you can say "Se me cayó el lápiz." It's almost like you're avoiding blaming yourself about what happened by using this structure. It just happened to you. You are not the subject. That's why you don't conjugate the verb for "Yo". The first example was "Se me olvidó traer el libro." In this case, bringing the book was forgotten, and this happened to you. This is how I understand it as far as I can, and once I agreed to the stucture I just got used to it without analyzing it. I'm learning both English and Spanish so maybe my explanations could be wrong or bad. but I just wanted to help because I struggled with this too!!

majnaguyuc you’re right, this is a very good example of ‘no fault se’ in Spanish. It’s easy. We use ‘se’ with an action verb when we don’t want to take the responsibility for having done something wrong ourselves. Instead of ‘lo olvidé’, which should be enough to explain this fact, we use ‘se me olvidó’ , indicating that you didn’t have to do with the act of forgetting that memory from your brain.

Excellent explanation. Really helpful. Although rare, I did see "se le" used together, e.g. El doctor sabía que al paciente se le había hinchado la rodilla. How to analyze it? Does it have something to do with the fact that hincharse has different meaning than hinchar?

The video says "se" can only be used with direct object pronoun, that does not seem to be 100% accurate. Here is a simpler example of "se le": Se le acabó el dinero. (He ran out of money). Here "se" is part of a pronominal verb, "se" + "acabar" means "run out". "le" indicates the action affects him. Therefore, "le" instead of "lo" is used. That's my attempt to make sense out of the example, but I am not sure if that's correct or not. Any comments welcome.

I just read your question on Reddit haha. None of the answers explained this very well. I got tripped up by the same exact phrasing in this video, you do indeed see ‘se’ followed by IO pronoun and I have no idea why. Educators and text do a very poor job on this topic. I didn’t even know that some verbs end in ‘se’ and are not reflexive, as in the case of the pronominal verb you gave in your eg. That should really be explained when reflexive verbs are introduced bc it causes a lot of trouble. Instead there are about 5000 different books and lessons explaining “REfLeXiVe vERbs do SOometHing tO YoUrSeLff dur.

Thanks for great videos! When you say "sé" means only "I know" I would disagree since it can also be a subjunctive form of "ser" for example in the phrase "sé fuerte" = be strong.

You're welcome! Did I say "only"? I don't recall that. But "sea" is the subjunctive, "sé" is the imperative. But I would've forgotten about it anyway!

But it's a logical mistake, because the imperative and subjunctive are basically the same idea--and the conjugations are often the same (though, not in this case). When we command somebody to do something, or tell them to do it, we have no idea if they'll actually do it. The imperative is like this special version of the subjunctive. I haven't focused on it yet, to figure out what's fully going on. But no worries my Swedish friend!

@@elspanishdude As I have learned it the positive imperative commanding someone to do something is a stand alone conjugation that is not connected to the subjunctive. However the negative imperative commanding someone to NOT do something uses the subjunctive in present form. I usually look at the charts at: www.spanishdict.com/conjugate/ser I think they are great! Some example: Espero que estudies - I hope you will study (present subjunctive) ¡No estudies! - Don't study (present subjunctive) ¡estudia! - Study!

Wisam Break That is where the accidental se comes in. It removes the blame from you and puts it on the items that were lost, forgotten, fell. That's why the verbs will match the item that was lost: Se me perdieron las llaves, or se me olvido' el libro. I did forget or lose them, but not intentionally. Look at more recent answers above. They are very good.

For sure. They're tough. Part of the problem is we have to talk backwards. So we have to think of the pronoun usually before we think of the verb, the opposite of English. Focus on one thing at a time Direct object pronouns are the place to start. Get those down really well, before moving onto anything else. The beginning story is important. For pronouns more than "se" actually. Break it down. One type of pronoun at a time.

The Spanish Dude Thank you, I honestly don't know the differences between pronouns so when I explain my problems to my bilingual friends I always have to use super specific examples. A while back I was learning Japanese and there's a similar thought process issue, apparently they end their sentences with the verb and you have the same issue of not just translating but rearranging the order of what you want to say.

Hola, @elspanishdude, Can you help settle a dispute? In this recent NYTimes headline, "Caucus de Iowa: esto es lo que puede esperarse la noche del lunes" (Iowa Caucuses: Here's what to expect Monday night), is "se" in "esperarse" passive, or impersonal? Or neither? And, just so I understand, if it’s the impersonal se, how would the sentence change if it used the passive se? And vice versa? Really sorry to come to you with this but you're one of the few Spanish dudes that can clear this up :) Gracias.

Actually.... You can use Reflexive + Indirect object dual constructions, the construction is known as the "Accidental Se".
