Sea Fishing From The Beach - How Light Can You Go!
For this latest episode we took the camera’s down to Kessingland on the Suffolk coast, to try and catch a few fish from the beach.
Now it’s no secret that the winter fishing around our coast line has been very poor so far this season, the codling have virtually been non-existent and anglers have been relying on the whiting to provide a bit of sport.
Now don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the Whiting, but I like to try and catch something that grows a little bigger and at least pulls back.
Fishing for these smaller species isn’t much fun on heavy beach tackle, in the same way that catching small roach and dace on carp rods wouldn’t be…
BUT, it got me thinking, catching small roach and dace on light tackle is pretty fun…
SO if we wanted to have a bit of fun catching Whiting, could we step down our tackle?
In-fact, exactly how light could we go?! Carp rods, avon rods, quiver tip rods?!

Nice vid fella I only had one rod when I was young in the 70's A feeder for the review Seven Chub. And used this set up when on beach too ? Had some good size fish too all GOOD FUN.

Excellent vid as usual. Great seeing light rods. I've only got 2-4 oz bass rods but I'm only fishing Essex estuary so it's not to rough all year round. Plus we've had some decent weather this year. Whiting are always welcome for me. As I'm an all rounder I do coarse fishing as well I'm looking forward to more vids from the best fishing FTWE on youtube

Love this video , i had excactly the same mindset with the dogfish on my local beach a couple of years ago , they was in plague proportions and i was reguarly taking 50 plus in a few hours but pn a standard set up it was pretty boring , luckily my beach is snag free and in the summer on a short tide i managed to get as low as 5lb bs and a 1oz weight on a freshwater rod and every doggie then put up a real scrap to be landed

I went sea fishing in corsica with my 4.5m whip. It was a right lark, catching these big scad and showing the locals how it should be done. Ended up feeding half the village!

Definitely a lot more interesting than using a big thick beach caster to catch tiny flat fish. If you didn't have all the snags and tide to contend with than a standard carp rod loaded with 12 lbs line would be quite adequate for most forms of shore fishing. After all, carp anglers catch much larger fish than sea anglers most of the time and their gear is a quarter of the weight

what a great video, very interesting indeed as i dont have sea fishing tackle but i do have carp rods with 3lb test i will give this a go down at Deal, Kent in June 2019.

Great vid I used to use my feeder rod on the beach until it snapped then I brought a telescopic beach rod with quiver tips and it's great fun for float fishing the shore or spinning for mackerel had a lot of successful days on the beach in mundesley north Norfolk and saves carrying the rest of my kit about

Great Video :) I have caught a lot of whiting this year might be my personal best. In my fishing competitions 99% of the fish weighed in are whiting and maybe a dab here and there. shame the cod situation is like it is but high hopes for next year!

For beach fishing, it is the weather, tide ,sea state and the need to often cast far that limit scaling down(depends what your after though) Carp rods are perfect for estuarys until they start running fast in big tides, I never need above 3oz of lead in my local (loughor) Greats vids, really enjoying them tbh, these vids have inspired me to get out more. cheers. Thanks for the kind comments Lee, glad your enjoying the video's. You're 100% right... most of the time (especially in the winter) it's just not possible to use light rods, reels and line. I'd love to do it more and actually think Whiting would be lots more fun on 10lb line, 1oz leads and light rods! Thanks again and hopefully we'll have another sea video out soon. In the Netherlands we fish a lot with quiver tip rods on the beach. A lot of anglers fish with even lighter rods! It is a lot of fun!

Great video .I don't have sea fishing tackle as only get to sea fish when on holiday for 1 or 2 days a year. But have lots of fresh water rods so this video is a good idea of what to take .Thanks 👍

Use a couple of old Shimano 2.75tc carp rods as standard now. Needed replacing so sprayed up the rings to help keep that salt out, they are perfect for the peir or beach on milder days, find with 10lb braid a 2-3oz grip holds bottom in some pretty rough days, better than leaving them to gather dust in the shed. Can give em a good whack out too.

I Liked the Carp lake to Roach lake analogy for using lighter rods and tackle. I don't mind catching whiting, for me its better than a blank fishing trip. I also like catching codling on heavier gear, but you can only catch what is in front of you on any particular tide, and if its only small stuff, then sometimes a lighter balance of tackle will help with bite detection and more fish hooked.

Hi Chris, another great video. A quick question if you don't mind, whats your general set up when fishing for codling, smooth hound, bass etc. I know you said you tend to use the pulley rig a lot, but what about line and shock leader? Is mono or braid better for a mainline? Cheers Drew.

Hi Drew, thanks for the kind comments mate, glad you enjoyed it. I like to use a decent 15lb mono and then a 50lb shock leader, I might step it up to 18lb and then 60lb depending on where I'm fishing. Hope that helps. Tight lines, cheers Chris.

Have you ever used a bass rod before the one I'm thinking off getting the daiwa sandstorm bass its rated up to 84g I've heard people use them for light bait work my only worries is what lead to use as I domt really wanna push the rod to the limet and I'm not 100 percent sure what is the ideal and lightest lead that can be used for sea fishing at maybe a shorter range May say stupide but what rig setups are bass rods actually designed for I know they can be used for abit off spinning what is kinda why I'm buying it but would be nice to have that versatility if I wanted to do bait work and maybe have that better bite detection

Very mild winter is what preventing the fish from venturing inwards. No rough seas, and lack of food getting smashed up and getting more food from further out. That could be the reason. Well I'm not gone this year too smooth the water and warm and getting nothing apart from a crab.

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. You bait it the same way you would do a single hook, just you'd have to do it 2/3 times depending on how many hooks you're using. :-)

It depends what you are using as bait and how big it is. In general on a 2-3 hook flapper you'd use smaller baits, so single worms of little strips of fish and squid... you could use elastic to secure them but probably wouldn't need too.

Nice, vid, been a little while! I have had my fishing channel running for a few months now, the cod season has killed us fish wise, we are die hard cod anglers this time of year and we have really struggled. Yeh its such a shame on the cod front, we was really looking forward to the cod videos helping grow our channel. The last two years have been fantastic on the welsh side of the upper channel, but its been pretty much none existent this winter. Fingers crossed for a good spring run. It does seem to have picked up on the boats and a few more seem to be coming in from the shore this week, so thats a good sign! A collaboration would be fantastic, I'm sure it would help my channel no end. Norfolk is a hefty 4 hour journey from south wales. We don't mind the travelling though, its all in the name of good fishing! Tight lines!! Fishing Brothers.

Hi mate, there'd be a good chance of some Smoothound if the conditions were right, using Peeler crab. I'm sure there'd be a chance of some Flounder and Bass too.

Yes that's an interesting way to catch miniscule whiting but catching those is not my idea of beach fishing! I love catching mackerel, pollack, bass or even gurnard on light gear in the Summer. Beach fishing in the Winter is a different 'kettle of fish'. My summer and Winter gear are two totally different sets of tackle! I gave up beach fishing early 2000s for the lack of rod benders ! Luckily the dogfish, rays and conger have moved in since and they can definitely BEND A ROD!😆😆😆

Our winter fishing can be very hard work on the Norfolk coast! Our spring and summer fishing is better though, Smoothound and Bass. 😊🎣

great vid again Chris, I think this is the way most tackle dealers are going with the new lighter and thinner rods, might have a go with my flattie rod next time out, I would have loved to see you get a 20lb cod on the feeder rod 😵

I was fishing off kessingland beach around the same time as you. I pulled in around 25 whiting and a dogfish. I started to think I was doing something wrong, because all I could catch was whiting. Lol.

I use to live in uk....now in oz...use to use overhead 14 foot rods for catching Nothing big like the video could only tell if fish was on By more weight .... now use 8 foot rods 4kg rating with little 2000 size reel fixed spool 6 pound braid and i catch bigger fish on this than i ever did in the uk and when i have a fish on rod bends right over and can see the fish fighting ......Uk is one of few country's that still think need overhead multipliers and 14 foot rods to catch fish from a beach. Not sure why . But more people should try to use lighter gear makes fishing more fun and you can actually feel the fish fight .

Hi Martin, in general we often need to use such heavy gear for a few reasons, mainly the weather, sea state and tide. In a strong wind, rough sea and big tide you need at least 5oz's of lead to keep your bait in position. (Especially in the winter.) In the summer if the sea is calm and if the tide isn't too fierce you can definitely get away with a lot lighter tackle.

brilliant fun! I use a 6ft spinning Rod and drop shot a size 8 trout hook small cube of mackerel half ounce weight at the bottom and bounce it from a harbour wall about 2 winds up off the bottom i catch everytime! pin whiting pouting rockling kills time while the big rods r out and stops you blanking 😂

Hi Lance, I'm a little bit out of touch with the latest rods! I've got some Greys GRX-s and I've had them years! If I was going to buy something I'd look at something from Greys, Daiwa or Sonik probably - am sure they all make some nice models.

If you're going tomorrow Ethan, watch out for the weather, I think it's going to be a windy one. I think there's plenty of small Whiting and Dabs being caught.

hi thought I'd do a little report me and my grandfather fished 2 down 1 up with flapper rigs and blowlug on the end of the pier with 2 rods each caught 10 pin y tings 3 dab and one bass believe it or not

Kin hell, remembered why I stopped sea fishing, its shite! 3oz leads and 20lb line on a broom handle 2/0 hook to catch 9oz fucking whiting lol! To get "sport" from the fish lol! I had lighter gear for my 42lb carp! Give it up lads :-) ps this guy is top, good vid, but seriously go do some proper fishing, uk shore angling these days is painful, even painful to watch! Day ticket! A tenner! Go find some pike ffs.

Haha! I understand you're frustration... sometimes! When it all goes right though (normally more often in the spring/summer now) and you manage a few Smoothound, Bass and Thornbacks you can't beat it! It such a shame this winter has been so poor for Codling!

From The Waters Edge TV yeah your right sport can. E had, but we didn't even get a hound run down my way this year (West Sussex) good few undulates which is weird as they only seem to of appeared these last couple of years, feel a bit bad catching them, they having such a hard time as it is. Might go whiting bashing with some freshwater kit, see how it goes :-) work alright as pike dead baits as well :-P
