I wasn't sold on Garl at first but completely flipped my opinion by the end.

Garl my beloved! I don’t think I have ever latched on to a character so quickly.

Garl is, hands down, the best character in this game and certainly one of the best characters of all time. I will die on that hill. They're all good characters, but Garl is the only GREAT character.

Part of me feels like they made the story around Serai and decided to make her a side character later on. She simply has the most going for her. Here’s my list, mostly based on character: 1) Serai 2) Resh’an 3) Garl 4) B’st 5) Zale 6) Valere

I gotta go with my boy Garl, He got me in my feels and he still pushed on until the end with a Smile on his Face.

I do like Bst mainly out of the animations they were glorious to see, Zale and Valere I picked Zale on my end but I did kinda wish they both had abit more to them even if gameplay-wise they are indispensable and honestly the whole cast is useful given the level up system. I'd say Resh'an's Ultimate is the best and busted for healing, reviving, attacking, and even increasing the enemy's cooldown, but Garl's is best in the offensive part that I didn't know until I read what it does.

I love Serai, will forever love her and I don't care that I've never arrived at the part where you recruit the other two!

My #1 is also Seraï. She's so useful and her back story is amazing.

I was a huge fan of Resh’an. At first I thought it was going to be revealed that he was the Messenger from the first game. Just wish his copy had more of a personality, felt like I was running through the later parts of the game with a bot rather than a party member.

I personally feel like making two separate lists to differenciate gameplay vs story. For example, Garl is my favorite in terms of personality and roll in the story, even though I consider him mostly the bottom in terms of combat utility except for having the best Ultimate Attack in the game. But the Final Boss is really the only one he really gets t chance to use against.

I really liked Sea of Stars! Serai was my favorite character too.

Serai is probably my favorite :).

Resh'an and Serai are so broken. Serai with her delaying kick, reshai with his (?) ultimate attack to also delay, do damage and heal and mostly their combo skill to also delay more. When you get the flow going, it´s not uncommon to completely stop solo -bosses actions for a really long time. Gameplaywise they are the top 2 easily in their own tier. Valere is really solid as well with the healing party ability with the shield, Zales healing power gets better as the game progresses and his offense is really solid as well. Beast is best for just tanking physical hits, and Garl a bit too. But Garl is more important in the early game as Beast is ever...

Serai was my fav too ❤

I love seraÏ, she's also the best character in my opinion, she feels the most "original" too. She's hot headed and impatient and that does impact in the story, like when she used Resh'an's Vial of time or when she didn't respect the Oracle of tides and he punishes her for that. I like how she has virtues and flaws, that makes her more realistic. I like Garl but he's just "too perfect" for me, I usually don't like the character that is always perfect like him, although he died because of this trait it didn't feel like he learned anything from it since in the true ending he'll be revived so his actions didn't have any consequences and in the 'first ending' where he indeed dies he didn't think what he did was wrong or anything like that. So in the end I'd rank Garl in third place maybe, of course that's my opinion!

For the Ranking of characters, I put aside their usefulness in combat, since in my opinion, it's not important for that type of Ranking, so even so Valere was one of my most useful members, due to how bland Zale and her are, I put Zale sixth, and Valere fifth, then it's Resh'an, it's a really great character in my opinion, but he can be a bit frustrating sometimes, and Sea of Stars pointed out the consequences of both his actions and inactions towards Aephorul, and I rank him in fourth. Then, there's B'st I really like him, but as you said, if we encountered him sooner, maybe we could have the opportunity to see more from him, even if the late quests gave us more details about his great personnality, he's third in my ranking. My second favorite character is Serai, she's extremely cool, and I loved to see her past, goals and behavior being more and more explained as we go through the game. And my most favorite character is Garl, I just love him so much, I often have an affect for deeply nice characters like him, but I don't know, there's something I just love about him, and when his death happneed...arg...it broke my heart...Garl is an incredible character..

The best characters to pick are seraï and resh’an. You just perma delay your opponent and every fight becomes trivial. Then I just have valere Cus of healing / shields and stuff, but ultimately you just need seraï and resh’an for easy wins :)

i get the feeling there is a wasted potential with B'st. Sure he can be a pretty good phys dpt and tank, but it's just too bad how its most powerful skill is something done by food (rezing fallen teammate)

I really liked the story. It was kinda similar to the feeling I got when I played games such as Tales of the Abyss or Legend of Legaia (both great games with awesome stories). In regards to the battle system I felt a little bit bored from time to time, and I continued playing because I was hooked with the story. The game lacked that essence of joyness compared to games such as Valkyrie Profile, for example. I mean, hitting an enemy twice or more just by tapping the button on the right time is nice but not so fun at all. Combos should have been more fluid to make this game even more exciting. Talking about the characters I would say that I really liked them but I found something fishy about three of them. Resh'an reminds me to Gogo from Final Fantasy or maybe Bard from League of Legends. All of them share some mysteries not revealed to the player, ensuring a kind of enigma to be deciphered. Serai is definitely Akali from League of Legends. She presents all the same traits: assassin, green clothes, ninja-style, uses kunais and even has a very similar hair style... I mean, seriously? And we also have B'st. He is really similar to Zac from League of Legends also. He presents a body which can adapt to the situation transforming into a ball bouncing everywhere leaving bloblets on the floor. Plus, he is really tanky. Zale is too similar to Jaster from Rogue Galaxy. Valere could be like Lenneth but i'm exaggerating here. All in all, I liked all the characters with their Steven Universe concept art imbued with some maturity. I know that it is difficult to create something new or different from everything already invented but maybe, they had to be a little bit more original at some point. Thanks for reading.

I think all of the characters in this game are S tier. But I’m that tier I’d say my favourites were 6. Valere a great character but unfortunately someone had to be last, though her and Zale are kinda interchangeable in this list. 5. Zale the only reason I like Zale a little bit more than Valere is because I chose him so I naturally used him more. 4. Resh’an and his reveal was amazing and I like his role in the story being one who is willing to help but has to limit his power. 3. Serai (easily the best fighter in the entire game) I love her backstory and design, her entire move set is fun. 2. Garl need I even say more? He does his best and even though later on he’s not as good as other character’s his ultimate is easily the strongest. 1. B’st, mostly because of his animations and the champion arena quest which has my favourite song in the game and his selflessness to save Garl. Just resonates with me for some reason but I DO wish we got a bit more time with him.

[Spoilers] I've got a complicated opinion of Garl. Keep in mind I've only just made it to Serai's world, so I haven't beaten the game yet (though I have been spoiled that I'll need to revive Garl in the true ending). On the one hand, I like the pure-hearted friend character type and for Garl in particular I really like his loyalty, especially during his Borrowed Time segment. It takes a great character to remain so upbeat and determined to do everything he can for his friends even in the face of his looming death. I was genuinely impressed with the way he was written to be so at-peace with his doom and focused on doing everything he could to give his friends the best chance they could have. "Let's make it count" gave a pretty good tug at my heartstrings. On the other hand, I can also totally see where critics are coming from when they call him a spotlight hog. He's a little too impulsive, too quick to speak up sometimes, to the point where it feels like Valere and Zale aren't really allowed to do much. I don't even mean just in a narrative sense either; sometimes he will butt in or interrupt even in-story when they're being addressed or focused on. Less than an hour after joining the party he cut off the Elder Mist trying to explain how to use the travel golems ("X'tol? Cool!" [LAUNCH]) literally as the Elder Mist was trying to give them Y'eet's name, making Garl the reason you can't go back to Mooncradle. He's the one to have the entire connection and conversation with Malkomud about using his magic for good, leaving Valere and Zale, the kids who have been literally isolated for ten years so they can learn to use their magic for the greatest good, no room to share their extremely germane experience. Garl is the one who volunteers to arm-wrestle the pirate, despite ALL THREE agreeing that he's the worst choice (Valere and Zale specifically say they're letting him do it because the pirate in question doesn't look very strong and they figure Garl would be more fair as an opponent). And yeah, either of them probably would have lost to Jacko as well, but then it wouldn't be Garl's fault getting them indebted to the pirates (and there may even have been a moment of character growth for the Solstice Warriors about being overconfident!). Multiple times Garl promises Valere and Zale's help to someone without waiting for their input. Garl is the one to rally the Brisk refugees and take charge of building the new town, leaving Valere and Zale to be content to be laborers and guardsmen, and he's also the one to name the place, AND the one to suggest to _Valere and Zale's Headmaster, who was their mentor/father figure for a decade_ that he stay on as Elder when he's looking for purpose. When they need to see the Oracle of Tides and the Docarri on the surface tells them to select one shell and only one, Garl starts to do it himself before he even thinks to ask permission (which, of course, Valere and Zale grant him because they can't ever say no to him). Notably, when they hear afterwards that they need to stay close together for the magic to allow them all to breathe, he winds up giving the shell that he picked out to the party lead anyway. Would it have been too much to let the player choose the shell in that scene? And then, of course, Garl gets himself killed when he calls the Fleshmancer a loser after Resh'an specifically told them all not to attract his attention, AND THEN pushes the burgeoning guardian gods out of the way to take a magic shot for them, which Resh'an comments is definitely fatal for him because, unlike them, he has no innate magic to protect himself. Any of these alone would have been fine, even a few of them together. It would be less irksome if he occasionally got called out for his recklessness, too. (Not much, just a simple "Garl! The Elder Mist wasn't done talking to us yet!" "Oops, sorry...") It's the fact that Garl so consistently forces his way into center stage that started to bother me. Like, what if Zale, the quick one, was the one with the impulsive streak; he could have been the one to interrupt the Elder Mist and eagerly wrestle the pirate. Such an attitude could have also made him be the one to push everyone to chase the villager being Called by the banshee Dweller, making him feel responsible when it Calls Garl seemingly as punishment. Valere, the monk, could have been the patient one, the one to share her sense of duty with Malkomud along with the loneliness they felt because of their powers. And sure, let Garl chime in on those conversations (support Zale's decisions, complement Valere's story with his own perspective), and let Garl keep his time to shine with the town of Mirth, but let the protagonists have their own moments to share their thoughts and opinions, grow as characters, and connect to people other than Garl. As it stands, it feels like the only time I saw Valere or Zale show any depth of personality in the first act (beyond "Garl's great, isn't he?") was whenever the story sidelined Garl for any length of time. I can also point out that it's only now that Garl is dead that I've seen Zale and Valere have a one-on-one heart-to-heart with a party member other than each other, namely Zale and B'st and Valere and Serai (although, can't help but notice the girls' conversation is again centered on Garl). All that to say, sometimes it feels like the game really wants Garl to be the protagonist, except that his sidekicks are the ones with the necessary magic powers.

I think you put Resh’an too low in the ranking, to be honest. He has the best ult and battle utility of the game (by far) and the character is also way more complex and beautifully written than the rest, with inner debates such as his relation with his best friend, Aephorul. For me, the ranking should be 1) Resh'an 2) Seraï 3) Garl 4) Valere 5) Zale 6) B'St PS. I didn't like the execution of Garl's resurrection, because it doesn't make sense, it creates a time paradox very difficult to explain...

I loved serai ...and didnt like garl ,never used him.. And didnt even get sad at his death and didnt even get happy at his comeback

Serai is a character I both want to rank high and low at the same time. She is good, till Garl's death. Where she doesn't show regret for creating the situation that killed him. The reason she is nervous for asking for help saving her world isn't even because she got someone killed. It makes her look manipulative and dishonest. She has been lying the entire game, like she only wants personal gain and is acting as a manipulator would. I think she'd be in 2nd or 3rd for me if she actually properly owned up to her actions instead of being a character we can't ever be 100% sure of their true intentions.

garl was annoying and his abilities werent very useful with having no elemental affinity i never used him

Honestly a pretty disappointing roster. The game clearly has some legit charm to its world, but almost none of that is in the heroes, and while I can at least appreciate the golem for trying something beyond humans, it's hard for me to connect with an inorganic character as opposed to an anthro or a beast/living monster. I'll wait and see if the DLC adds a molekin or an anthro/organic monster character. Also, before anyone mentions Reshan, I don't count him/her because it has a human form, which just makes Rashan a human shapeshifter, and it comes off as a crutch because you didn't think your audience would relate to a bird anthro (or something even more disgusting) , when really, it's HUMANS I can't relate to, so this just backfires and makes what could have been an awesome character feel more generic and shallow.
