Half hour of that was trying to cannon into the chair and this dude just first try swords in.

In my first run I cannon'ed over to the chair. Back then I thought it wasn't possible to sword lunge to it but other speedrunners found it.

Not that long actually it's more a test of patience than skill. The preparation before the run is a lot longer than the run itself. I spent a few days planning the route for 3 players then called my friends over. We got this run after 5 3-hours sessions (about 2/3 attempts each times). It was even enjoyable at time, so they might be interested to do this kind of things again.

Where in this run would you save time ? I know how we could save time in some places but I'm curious of what your answers are.

@@Anemion upon later review it may just be my misinterpretation of the rules and/or category for this run but couldn't 4 people on a galleon get the vaults better and couldn't everyone vote for the tall tale and have the boat basically there by the time the last person votes to start?

@@fieryfirefly5769 The rules states that every crew member and the ship must be at the starting location when the Tale begins. So you have to sail from Morrow's Peak to the Shores of Gold. However you could absolutely do this with 4 people on a galleon, although you should, in theory, get there a bit later due to the galleon having a lower maximum sailing speed than a brig. 4 people would indeed do the 4 vaults faster. The slowests vaults in that configuration whould be either South vault or North vault. If you end up saving time it won't be much. Other ways to save time over what we did would be to use Loot Sprinting but all crew member must execute it perfectly which is why none of us are using it in this run. Some strats involving an heavier amount of preparation have been discussed as well like pre-collecting medallions, stacking powder kegs on the boss before the run to oneshot him or sinking your ship to get to the island quicker. Altough preparation isn't forbidden (we do get a collector chest for our run after all) I don't really like having to go to the Shores of Gold to do setups before a run. Sure, if you're being pragmatic, it is definitely faster, but I don't find it to be very in the spirit of speedrun. It is purely a question of point of view tho. Sinking your ship after starting the tale looks to me like a loophole in the rules. It's basically breaking the requirement for your ship to be at the starting location with randomness added on top of it. Then again this run isn't perfect in its execution either. We had good rng on wind and final boss so it won't be easy to beat it but you should still be able to improve the time even without changing anything in the route.

@@Anemion Ok thank you for that, I do find this quite interesting. Loot sprinting was another thing I thought of but it wouldn't save a heap of time. I assumed that 4 people would be able to do it faster but what about more? Can alliances happen where they help? With the setup how much setup are you allowed? Starting the tall tale with something like the gold hoarder key seems a bit unfair. The kegs on the gold hoarder is more reasonable to me as that takes a lot of time to save very little so only people trying to really shave 10-15 seconds of time would go through the effort to do it. (This feels more like a speed runner strategy) Also personally I think that the ship having to start at morrow's peak is a bit silly as then the majority of the run ends up getting to the shores of gold and not doing the shores of gold, but that's just my opinion

​@@fieryfirefly5769 We also forbid alliances or any help from a pirate that isn't from your crew. The rules for the begining of the run are there to provide both a fair start between all players and to prevent people from rowing 15 minutes to the quest giver location before every run only to save 5 minutes of travel time. Right now there are no limitations on the amount of setups you can do. Maybe some of them should be ruled out but no one is using them at the moment so it stays in a grey area. The thing I really dislike with those lengthy setups is that once someone has done a run with it everyone else now has to do the same. I'm more in favor of making separate categories, one with restrictions for more competitiveness and another "true any%" where everthing that make the timer go lower is allowed. Currently we have separation between runs using patched (or soon to be) glitches and the ones who doesn't. It's a more logical and futureproof way to split between runs but it won't satisfy people with diverging opinions on setups (or other restrictive rules like starting location or use of checkpoints). I find both categories (restricted / true any%) equally interesting, just that they don't match very well together. Edit : A fun experiment everyone can do is to replicate our setup for SoG. Hop onto a server and go to Morrow's Peak (skip the chest for now). If you want a chance to beat any of the top 3 runs, you'll need a wind coming from the West by Southwest (can also be from SouthEast but it has 50% chance to kill your run depending on where it goes next). Easy, right ? It'll give you an idea of how long it can be just to get a few runs going.

It should still be possible. It's not an easy skip. Your position, where you look at and your jump timing matter a lot.

@@Anemion only downside is no top deck holes, but it’s the easiest to bucket.

We also had to spend 3 times the full duration of this run on average just be able to start a try in the perfect conditions (wind in the right direction, a collector chest and the time to go to Morrow's after spawing in)

If you are playing with friends you'll have an easier time farming his skull by abusing checkpoints. Speedrun limits their uses to keep the runs somewhat interesting.

You had me worried for a second. The timer does stop on the exact frame it is supposed to. In speedrun having the end of a run a bit earlier than the real ending is common. The reasons are various, in our case we wanted something easy to recognize (gold hoarder explosion) and not affected by rng or ping (unlike cutscene start or the card "Tall Tale completed")

I don't have a good setup for this. Both your character position and your camera position matter to pull off the jump. You can try to reproduce as closely what I did, hopefully it works for you: - You need to be on the highest part of the rocks you're standing on. I used the barrel on the bottom right corner and the pointy edges of the rock to lineup my character properly. - Then you need to aim at the plank you will be landing on. It is directly below the rightmost wooden post where the GH banner is attached. I used the logo of my monitor to do the lineup, in short the wooden post was roughtly in the middle of my screen - Then you lift the camera about 30° up. - Next you start charging the sword lunge. Right before dash starts, you press (and hold) forward. - Jump as soon as you hear your sword hitting the wall. I know other people have their setup. That jump is really tight and as I said there isn't an easy way to do it. My PoV is in the description if you want to see things bigger. You can also check out the other runners to see if they did things differently.

Nothing changed; Tall Tales bosses health scale on crew size. I don't know the exact values but usually it takes a really long time for 3 people and even more for 4. That's why we tricked the game into thinking I was fighting him alone by disconnecting everyone except myself, joining me back only after the battle started.

I agree but the only thing close to a glitch here is disconnect/reconnect to weaken the boss. It pains me to say this but we are technically using it as intended by the devs. We are simply forcing it on purpose, just like people completing the repeat of Tall Tales by starting at the last checkpoint.

I've discussed this a while back in another comment. Of course 4 people would get the 4 medallions faster but the galleon has a lower maximum speed than a brig. I assumed each advantage (4 people vs faster ship) pretty much cancels out. If not, I would give 80/20 edge to the 4 player crew but the time difference between each crew shouldn't exceed 10s or so.

The rules used to be that you had to deliver the gold hoarder skull. It was later changed to match the end of the tall tale itself; when the toast for completing a Tall Tale is displayed. Selling the skull isn't part of that, even though there are commendations tied to it. The actual end is on the GH's death rather than the toast itself because there's can be a random delay between his death and the start of the cutscene, and the moderators didn't wanted it to be a factor in the final time

Or were you talking about Tall Tales checkpoints ? In that case, according to Rare Thieves, it's when you get the gold hoarder coin

We got lucky i guess, but we were prepared for it. The worst possible outcome would have been if the volcano hit me because I was the only one who knew the way to the Shores of Gold.

You technically could but we disallow it. Most tales wouldn't be interesting if we could leave people already at the destination

The glitch you showcase has already been reported to Rare. Besides there's already a more efficient out of bounds route than yours. Current WR for SoG any% is 11min long. Although it can be shortened using some trickery, I doubt your 10 minutes claim is valid under the current rules.

As far as I know you need to reach the Shores of Gold to be able to respawn there 100% of the time. Moreover this would only be a valid strategy for 4 players, smaller crews need collector's chests and a moving ship.

@@Anemion oh, ok cause one time we were running from a ship cause we had 10+ hours of loot on our ship( world events, stealing, fotd) so we ran to shores of gold then kept but they followed us so we kept running, after 4 hours of running we just red sead it because we found out they were using cheats, but when I respawned we were at shored of gold so I was like really confused

Boss difficulty/hitpoints is dependent on the # of players at start of fight therefore 1 player is lowest HP

We have a rule preventing this kind of strats. Everyone and your ship has to be at the starting location.

While this is true, it is explicitely forbidden in the rules. After all, if you could have someone wait on the island, why not have him wait next to the boss with gunpowder barrels ready to one-shot him.

I feel any set up for a run outside of being in the quest would be just not allowed.

@@jackthompson7546 Most of the TT9 runs use a collector's chest which is considered a setup but usually people don't mind. I try to mimic "what a casual crew could have or do before starting the tale for the first time". In other words, the crew and the ship will be at the starting location (they don't know where the destination is) and may have common loot onboard such as collector's chests, gunpowder barrels, a rowboat, food, etc.

It used to be like you said but the commendation for returning the skull is no longer relevant ingame and will always increment by one everytime you kill the Gold Hoarder (unless this was a bug at the time). When this was brought to the speedrunning community, we changed the rules as we felt the real ending was the Pirate Lord 's speech, selling the skull being more of a bonus (plus the sailling back wasn't that interesting). My solo runs of Shores of Gold did sell the skull as the rules were still the old ones.

His max HP scales on your crew size at the time you engage him. By disconnecting everyone but one pirate you can balance him for a crew of a single pirate. He will stay in that weakened state even when everyone reconnect.

@@timdev615 This is pure speculation as the wiki doesn't have much data about the Gold Hoarder (like hp and such) but I suspect Rare took a lazy approach when designing Tall Tales bosses for different crew size. If I had to guess they simply made them scale linearly with your crew size (let's say he has 100% hp for 1 pirate, 200% for 2 pirates, 300% for 3 and 400% for 4). On paper this doesn't look so bad however there is another huge issue; bananas. If their health increase, I would guess their healing (in terms of raw amount) does too since it's based on max hp. Which in turns means they get more time to heal again if they need it, and so on, and so on... So even though the scaling is only linear in pratice it feels almost exponential. It only ends when they have fully depleted their stock of bananas. Edit: I forgot to answer your question. No I don't think they updated their hp pool at all. I think I remember them saying they made the bosses easier for smaller crews in a patchnote years ago but of course we don't have actual number to relate on. It didn't felt any different though

@@Anemion yeah, the issue with the gold hoarder isn't really his massive hp, it's how much he heals, so on the last run I just nuked him hard and killed him in a couple minutes solo

Tall Tales bosses's max HP are set once you start damaging them and is based on your crew size at that moment. So if everyone but one player disconnect and you engage them, their hp will be balanced for a single player. Once your crew rejoin you can stunlock him using blunderbuss.

You repetedly jump on it, just like in real life. It works on most ladders you can find in the world as long as they are not too straight or titled toward the sides.

Absolutely. When making the route for 3 players, loot sprinting came to mind but we decided against using it. I wasn't very good at it and my friends didn't knew it at all. We felt it wasn't necessary to learn it and instead focused on doing runs and trying to execute the route properly in the very short time period we had for this.

I've rewatched the whole sailing section just to make sure. I don't think you quite understand what you are saying or what is going on here. Drift from waves comes from a random direction at various strength and beside, it is completely irrelevant here. I'm trying to sail the ship following the shortest path to Tribute Peak, while also having to keep the sails correctly oriented for maximum speed from a sideway wind. My only visual cue for the second half is a specific position of my ship's compass. All of this to arrive at Tribute Peak at a precise angle and location so my mate can canon over to his vault. It's perfectly normal to turn the wheel constantly to make adjustment for all these things. We were horrible at angling our sails however, but the path we took to get there was good.

Yeah let's not talk about that. We'll fix it when someone beat our run.
