When America needed him most, Seabiscuit became the working man’s hero and the most remarkable thoroughbred racehorse in history! Seabiscuit’s story played out against America’s Great Depression, when one in four breadwinners was without work. Spectator sports, radio programming and movie theaters offered an escape and created instant celebrity... even for horses. Seabiscuit made us believe in ourselves, in courage, in perseverance, and in America. Watch his journey!
This program includes the complete archival Seabiscuit and War Admiral “Match Race,” which is considered to be the greatest horse race in history. Featuring real footage of jockey Red Pollard’s thrilling victory at the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap.

My mother visited the Ridgewood Ranch and met Sea Biscuit, and even had the opportunity to feed this great horse. She was amazed at how small he was. This was one of her favorite memories.

Seabiscuit has always been an inspiration to those in life that know his story. He knew what he was doing all along. He found a small group of people who needed fixing and needed love and returned the favor. I thank God for animals.

I’ve never understood why Seabiscuit was considered sort of ugly. While it was true that he was built unconventionally for a racing TB, instead more compact, perhaps more like a quarter horse. Maybe in another lifetime he would have been a champion cutting horse or barrel racing horse haha. But I think he was beautifully proportioned. Every part of his body seemed to flow perfectly from one part to another. And what a magnificently long arched neck and a very strong handsome head!

The best racehorses have a lot of muscularity. It’s not always about perfect symmetry! I have two rabbits as pets-one is a rescued wild Cottontail, now four years old and definitely built for speed. Her companion buddy is a female mini Rex, not at all built for speed, but incredibly muscular (she is about a year old). The Cottontail chases the mini Rex relentlessly, but she can never catch her! Not only does the mini Rex have a clumsier, heavier, bulkier physique, but as a domestic rabbit, she has a more playful, relaxed personality. Not at all competitive. Yet, I watch her routinely outsmart the wild rabbit (built for speed and cunning! Go figure!) and the muscular mini Rex will put on incredible bursts of speed and unexpected maneuvers that leave the Cottontail in her dust. As a result, the Cottontail has become intensely determined to catch her, much like Captain Ahab trying to capture Moby Dick! So far, the Cottontail keeps failing. 😂

I had a thoroughbred in 1992, I will NOT tell you her name (filly) She was a 4 year old that one of my friend's owned. He was getting out of the business, retiring to Arizona. So I bought her for $4,000 out of his barn. She lost her first five races for me. I put her in an $8,000 claiming race. She won going away on a Thursday night in the rain! And she won her next 9 out of 11 races!! I did breed her to a fine stallion; but my circumstances led me to sell her and the breeding rights to her in 1997. I see now that the colt she had- went onto win over $1.5 million. Reminds me of Seabiscuit!

Seabiscuit actually had the pedigree. He is just portrayed as the people's horse since he did not have the look unlike Secretariat who was a freak of nature.
@marysueeasteregg
@marysueeasteregg 5 жыл бұрын
Seabiscuit had a promising pedigree, for sure. His dam was well bred, his sire Hard Tack, too. Hard Tack was a multiple stakes winner whose career was impeded by an extremely difficult temperament. But unlike Secretariat's parents Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal, Hard Tack and Seabiscuit's dam Swing On were *not* proven in the breeding shed, and are not remembered as otherwise successful breeding stock. Seabiscuit was from Hard Tack's first crop; he was Swing On's second foal. Neither horse went on to produce another horse of note -- Seabiscuit, in that way, was more of a genetic fluke than Secretariat. When Secretariat was conceived, Bold Ruler had been champion North American sire six years running, and Somethingroyal was already established as an outstanding broodmare, the dam of three stakes winners and three stakes-placed runners; she and Bold Ruler continued to produce well in the breeding shed after their 1969 date in which Secretariat was conceived. Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal would both be remembered as outstanding breeding stock even if Secretariat had never existed. Seabiscuit's pedestrian looks did have much to do with his popularity as the people's horse. So did the fact that he was owned (like Seattle Slew and California Chrome) by an upstart newbie owner, rather than by an old, established racing stable; that early in his career he had (like John Henry and Stymie) run in the claiming ranks; and also because he ran mostly in California, in an era when the old eastern racing establishment looked down upon the West Coast as the boondocks of Thoroughbred racing.

Most all modern thoroughbreds can trace their ancestry to Eclipse. Not unusual for SeaBiscuit to have Eclipse in his lineage. I've never heard Biscuit had an enlarged heart. Pharlap, Secretariat, Man O War. did. Probably many others. Those horses that were chestnut seemed to have greater propensity for the enlarged heart gene.

I love historical situations. Back then....tuffest won.! These days...idk...seems like they're softer. Why no horse on earth now days will ever beat Secretariat's records. Yes there are some good horses...but never again...Secretariat...Pharlap...

The saying goes, all records are meant to be broken. But, some records will never be broken. Just like humans, I doubt we will ever have another Muhammad Ali either.

He was a wonderful horse. I would loved to see Secretariat and Sea Biscuit race in their prime. I think Secretariat would have won but it would have been an exciting race to watch for sure.

Getting to him and passing is 2 different stories. That horse loved the challenge. Secretariat was a great horse. I got to see him run. But the biscuit would have done to him exactly what he did to war admiral. Bye bye. I agree it sure would have been the race of all races. Ahh we can only dream. My dad saw seabiscuit run. He said when that horse hit high gear there was no catching him. My money would be on the biscuit.

Seabiscuit was more like FDR than the common guy. Impeccable pedigree, overcame a disability.

Inspiring. But one criticism. Too much time spent on jockey George Woolf, not enough on Red Pollard, whose down-and-out biography parallels that of the horse..
