I'm in New Zealand and have been tracking it since launch its just off the coast now I would give it 2 - 3 weeks until it reaches land

Welcome to our island, what a cool project, congratulations and best of luck. Looks like a great excuse to travel the world too. New Zealand sounds cool. :)

I'm impressed that little boat made it there. I hope it makes it in its second journey.

We want to follow SeaCharger's progress!! How about posting the tracking on a web site?

Sounds like a brilliant idea actually!

you can do it here (im not sure if youtube will allow to post it as a link, so here it is one time with white space in between ht tp://ww w.revguitar. com/ progress.html ) (www.revguitar.com/progress.html)

Very cool, looks like SeaCharger is well on its way! We'll be checking her progress as she makes it towards New Zealand. Did she circle for a day on leaving Hawaii, before tracking southwest? Maybe getting a satellite fix?

Awesome project and must be a very well made model! As others hinted, you should really set up a live feed!

Spending thousands of dollars and countless hours to build a boat that quite possible will be lost at sea.. I love it! I would do the same if I had the willpower to take on projects that last more than a couple of days, weeks at most. I'm pretty sure you've thought about it, but what if the boat crosses an area with free floating seaweed, fishing lines etc and the keel drags it along and eventually catches it in the propeller? I would probably make a diagonal front truss to the keel and protect the propeller in a duct not protuding below the keel in order to maybe push any seaweed off the keel and below the propeller. Perhaps even adding a secondary propeller in case of failure. Care to share any details on the magnetic coupling?
@damonmcmillan21736 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your interest and kind words! I actually thought about a diagonal keel just like you described but it would have been harder to build than the straight up and down keel. I figured if seaweed got stuck on the front of the keel it would eventually get pulled off due to wave action. And a secondary propeller was considered too but in the end I just wanted to keep it simple and cheap. The magnetic coupling is similar to many other radial magnetic couplings that you can find online. Really nothing special about it. Thanks again! Damon

I just stumbled into your videos about the SeaCharger crossing from Cal to Hawaii. I have a specific question: how did you monitor its location throughout its journey? I have been toying with a similar project and was considering using ham radio WSPR, which is a beacon transmitter that gets monitored by ham radio operators all over the world. This should give reliable monitoring throughout the journey. There are a number of problems with this, but part of the fun is trying to figure out the best compromise for solving each of these problems.If you have a few minutes, I would love to know just how you received information about its location, what sort of radio link did you have?The part about monitoring this and that is clever, but I pretty much understand that and the GPS navigation etc. it is the radio link back to you that I am most curious about.Thank you and I must say, I'm very impressed. Good job, my fellow maker.Ron Jone K7RJ

How are you dong Damon? I just read your post on "Make". It's very inspiring. I hope SeaCharger do well and enjoyed her journey.

Thank you! I'm doing great. I have SeaCharger back, in my garage. The motor and rudder servo still work, so it they hadn't been broken off, it might have made it to NZ. Maybe next time...

No mast.....no lights, camera etc. Looks like it was gonna flip in the shore current. He says it got picked up by a passing container ship near NZ and its in a museum now. Be nice to see a tech breakdown to see if this is even real.

How is the seacharger doing?
@damonmcmillan76297 жыл бұрын
Hi Bjarne, check out www.seacharger.com for details. SeaCharger made it to within a few hundred miles of NZ before finally dying. It then got picked up by a passing container ship and is now in a museum in NZ. Thanks for your interest!!!

@@damonmcmillan7629 I don't know dude, this sounds really fish and maybe untrue. A container ship wouldnt even see that tiny solar panel in the ocean let alone "stop" and pick it up. Furthermore, donating it to the local museum as many cargo shipmates do? I call bullshit.

Why is it listing?
@damonmcmillan76297 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, it lists in a crosswind because the wind gets under the solar panels and pushes the boat over. Also, there are large air pockets in the fairings on the keel. It takes a while for water to leak in and fill those air pockets. The result is that, for several minutes after launch, the keel is more buoyant and therefore less effective than normal. Thus the boat lists more in the few minutes after launch.

Isn't there a high risk it will capsise with big waves?

Lost me at "I also rely heavily on my faith in God, praying constantly that I won’t make any catastrophically bad decisions and that the elements will be tempered." You DO realize that on Sunday, one team prays to their god and the opposing team prays to the same god. No matter what, one teammate will thank god for their win. Did the losing team simply not pray hard enough? If your god is truly omniscient, then it already knows what will happen and no amount of prayers (begging) will matter. You're merely praying because you think it will get you something. In reality, it's wishful thinking about nothing that you can do anything to change. Do you really want prayer to work in this case? Because that directly implies that if you don't pray, then it won't work. Just think about it. People having to pray that their car will start. That's kind of a terrible scenario.

Tiberio, if it capsizes, the keel will just flip it right-side-up again.

Damon McMillan I am designing a similar boat to test in the mediterranean (I am a 13yo from Italy) to then try to have it cross ‘the pond’ as you americans call it. I am about to buy a creality cr-10, a 30x30x40cm 3d printer, to make 3d printed prototypes for it and maybe actually 3d print the final boat, although for now I am still only designing it because I don’t have the funds. I will send you an email with some questions I have, and hope you can help me out. You are a great inspiration for me. The questions are mainly going to be about what you think of my ideas for it, in particular the sise, the solar panels, but mainly about the gps and satellite. I hope to be able to have succesful tests and prototypes to find spinsorships, get people attention, start a small crowdfunding and present it at the maker faire in rome. For this reason, I am planning to have streaming cameras on it, and although on the seacharger website it says that you opted not to put an fpv camera because transmitting the images would be complicated and expensive, i would be grateful if you could share tips and what you know. I’ll send you an email soon. Cheers, Tiberio from Rome
