Dear Gil: I do hope that Seachem de nitrate takes the NO3 out of your wife’s, terrific setup. That tank appears to grow Java fern very well. It is the live plant I started with. It did fine for quite some time, propagating well. But, then it began to die off and eventually it all expired. This was before I understood how to fertilize a tank and I was just keeping it in tanks with a gravel substrate, not adding anything to support the plants, other than fish food. I was under the impression that the waste the fish produced would suffice. But, I suspect that the ferns used up all of some nutrient. I appreciate how you added a tap (valve) to the outtake of the canister filter to slow the flow so the product can do its job. I look forward to seeing the results of your use of this, fine product. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

G'day E.J, It will be interesting to see if this product works, as Colin seems pretty excited about it. This tank has only a sand substrate with root tabs placed beneath the swords when they were planted. No other fertiliser is added. I wonder if no3 is reduced, what if any the effect on the plants will be. Cheers mate.

Thanks Scott, I think it is the same pumice as Matrix, but they are graded differently due to the size of the pores.

After reading the other reviews, I thought I will give it a try and in the end De*nitrate really works, brings down my 60 gal overstocked freshwater tank from 80ppm nitrate to a constant 10ppm, however it takes a lot more effort, brain and money on top of the product itself to create an ideal environment for it. And I think it's worth it. First you need a few things: 1. A media reactor cylindrical and clear 2. Liquid flow meter 3. Flow control valve 4. A pre-filter 5. An after-filter 6. A submersible aquarium pump 7. Shut-off valves 8. Stainless/plastic hose clamps and strong cable ties 9. Clear aquarium vinyl tubing 10. 50 micron filter pads Then you connect the submersible pump to a shut-off valve, through a pre-filter, then through media reactor, out through the liquid flow meter, through the flow control valve, then finally an after-filter which is a 50 micron polishing pad tied to the end of the tube submerged in the aquarium. You want the flow rate to be at around 35gph consistently. To do that, you will have to adjust the flow control valve once in a while as the pre-filter catches more and more debris while it slows down the flow little by little. A few things need to take into consideration: 1. You need a pump that has a flow rate of at least three times of 35gph just to handle the media reactor and pre-filter, then add roughly additional 100gph for 50 micron polishing pad because it slows down the flow significantly. Finally another 50gph as the flow rate gets slowed down little by little in the long run while it catches more and more debris. 2. You need to use your liquid flow meter to read your current flow rate easily and adjust accordingly. 3. Do not cheap out on a pre-filter, make it big, in diameter, not in length. The bigger diameter it has, the longer it takes to slow down the flow significantly hence the longer time periods it provides until maintenance. 4. Put a 50 micron filtering pad inside your pre-filter. This will provide longer working time for your media reactor before it gets clogged up by debris which then it would require a complete rinsing of the media itself. 5. It can be pain in the ass when it comes to the tubing size. The best case scenario would be one size fits all when your pump, your pre-filter, your media reactor, your flow meter all require the same tube size, if not, then you would need multi-hose adapter which adds to the work and cost. 6. Always use clamps in every joint to prevent potential leak. Use plastic cable ties or hose clamps instead of metal clamps for underwater applications. 7. Add shut-off valve at the ins and outs of your pre-filter and media reactor for easy maintenance. 8. After every time you rinse your media, add tiny bit of sugar at the bottom and middle of your reactor as the anaerobic bacteria need a carbon source to thrive. 9. Last but not least, your will need an alkaline buffer and aquarium minerals because once water change becomes less and less often, maintaining a healthy PH and vital minerals level becomes more and more important.

Thanks for the information. How long did it take to see a measurable result? Do you think it is the de nitrate doing the work or is it the slow flow through the reactor meaning any media could be used?
@xuanzheng1960
@xuanzheng1960 Жыл бұрын
1. Two weeks or less because I wasn't measuring the nitrate level everyday cause of work and certainly not at the very beginning because I did the measuring. 2. I have used Biohome Ultimate and Marinepure block which all claims to be able to do some damage, which in the end, not that much compared to Seachem Denitrate, I may try Pond Matrix but I'm satisfied with the 4L Denitrate I bought, man that's a HUGE difference, the Biohome Ultimate I put in my canister filter is way more than the amount of Denitrate I put in my media reactor like 3:1. What I agree with both products is that they work fantastically for the first two processes of denitrification. 3. I believe it has something to do with the flow rate, size of the media, internal structure and size of the pore inside because anaerobic bacteria are generally smaller, and unfortunately I cannot give you an definite answer on this one.

Is this stuff like pumice or baked clay , only asking because to get the correct amount needed it would be way to expensive. Especially for the amount I would need according to the instructions. With the slow rate etc is sounds very similar to the anoxic bcbs? But would definitely be interested to see if it works 👍🏼
@Gilsfishroom
@Gilsfishroom Жыл бұрын
It is a very porous pumice, not a clay. It needs water passing through, not around like the bcb. I think it will act the same as a slow moving bog where the water passes through the gravel. I made another reactor with only gravel and a little flourite to see if there is a difference.

Flow doesn’t matter the flow slows down inside media and becomes anaerobic
@Gilsfishroom

I think the reduced flow ensures that all of the free oxygen in the water column is used up by the aerobic bacteria on the outside of the media.
