Today I am reviewing the Ironwolf pro 10TB drives, Firecuda SSHD 2TB Drive & 7200rpm Barracuda drives from Seagate, and honestly all these drives had really good consistency on their read and write performance, even in when gaming with solid frame times in dota 2 as well. The Ironwolf pros are very solid with the write speeds being surprisingly much higher on the 4k random writes than most hard drives I have seen, and with their vibration control and solid performance in raid 1, make them an easy recommendation for the NAS market.
The SSHD Firecuda... really good drive, includes a 5 year warranty, which for the price is insane, you get the 8GB MLC portion as well which does a really good job of loading up consistently used programs quite fast.
And lastly is their Barracuda line which includes a 2 year warranty and is your standard 7200rpm drive that performs well in the benchmarks for its budget price.

Quality video, I'm digging the increase in production quality and the outdoor B-roll. I might pick up one of these SSHDs. They seem great to use as a game drive. I often play the same game for a while and the faster load times are always welcome.

AeRiaL if you are referring to the Backblaze HDD failure reports you should consider that they use consumer grade HDDs for enterprise. The workload they have is not what the HDDs were designed and optimized for therefore the data might not be representative for consumers.

I got a 4TB BarraCuda a month back and so far I'm loving it. At 5900 RPM it runs quite cool, and the speed really surprised me! About 180 MB/s if I'm not mistaken. I hope it does not kick the bucket because I'm reluctant to go back to WD. I've had far too many drives die at an early age from them. Great video as always Bryan!

The 2.5" Firecuda 2Tb drive performs good and is a good deal I found. Had mine installed into my gaming laptop initially as a cheaper alternative for mass game storage. But I've been so impressed with it, I've been thinking about buying another and installing it into my PS4 for more better storage. :D

I can't comment on the others. But the SSHD is *extremely* quiet most of the time because you end up hitting the SSD portion for your most used applications without the HD portion spinning up at all or only spinning up to a very low speed for some supplemental data. Mind you, I got a earlier version and not the firecuda itself. But it has lasted me several years now without issues so I'm super happy with it. From what I've heard they've significantly upgraded the firmware in the firecudas so the time from a data request till data is delivered should be significantly reduced with firecuda now then with my old SSHD as it'll take access times into consideration and not just the access frequency of the data. Mind you, the drive is not perfect. I would most certainly *not* use the SSHD for data you expect to manipulate a lot. So for instance video editing. And it's not exactly good if you plan to do a lot of writing to it either... It's best for a read heavy workload with only occational writes. So, for OS drive, backups, survailance and video editing I'd pick other solutions.

I have the FireCuda SSHD. I love it. Ive had problems with seagate in the past but they seem to have fixed alot of issues and the drives are so quiet. Plus the drive does get alittle faster once you open a program a couple of times. Before I switch to the SSHD, I had an old seagate hard drive that was dying. It would take 15 mins to get into windows. Now it only takes about 15 to 20 secs. (depends on how fast i can type my password.) :D

I have the 3.5 Firecuda. I really like the idea of it, however after playing a bit of GTAV I had been noticing a lot of pop-up. I had a 2.5 850 Evo that I was going to put in another desktop, however I added it to another to test GTAV vs Firecuda. Pop-up seems to have been eliminated. I'm unclear as to if this is a fluke, but it appears the SSD is better in loading open world maps like GTAV better than the Firecuda. I did not change settings, and I'm using an i7 6700HQ, 32GB DDR4, and 1080ti FE w/ Arctic Hyrbid III cooler. I didn't run any tests, so it's possible it's in my head, but my eyes are good enough to see pop-up textures.

Love them. I don't suggest getting a 2.5 bc they run at 5400 rpms only. I use the ironwolf in my rig and it's awesome. Do not do not use userbench. a bogus program. Some schmuc out a what ever the he'll they want on there. I had a barracuda and sent it back for the ironwolf. The ironwolf works better for raid 0. Don't be discourage from doing raid 0 for gaming. U have nothing to lose other than u will have to download games again.go with a firecuda or the ironwolf. Now they have the Seahawk. Might not be good bc its for surveillance not sure yet. But the ironwolf out performs the barracuda any day for games

2014 and below seem to be when they were most unreliable. I have a 1tb from 2013 that was in an HP pc that i formatted and used on my new build, ending up giving up ghost and not powering up anymore. Most pre made PCs ive had have had seagates and have had zero issues, have one laptop with an HGST 2.5in. I ended up purchasing a brand new 2tb barracuda so im hoping it does better then the last one did.

I am contemplating between Seagate and WD right now... Ive been using WD all my life since I first got into PC many many moons ago. (Microsoft v3.1.1, just to give you a time perspective). the reason why I am contemplating is because we are in 2018 and for some odd reason WD is milking people when it comes to HD's and their perspective rpm speeds along with size. while on the other hand Seagate is 7,200-rpm no matter what size the drive is including 4, 8 and 10-tb drives. though I still have to check about Firecuda to see if they make those in a 4-TB space. - Though I have never ever had any problems with WD ever since ive been using them. Im afraid by what other reviewers have been saying about tons of dead drives or drives dying after 6 to 1 year use on the Seagate drives. Ive heard horror stories from friends & other people. I have never taken so much time (2-months) on debating on which drive should I get. I need at the least four [ 4-TB drives ] right now as I lost 2 WD drives recently because they where old, And I forgot about them and forgot to upgrade them. the old WD drives where 14 years old each. so its not like they didnt do their work because they did and then some. :) Anyways been watching many youtube videos and surfing Newegg and Amazon for months deciding on what drive to get. - Im not liking the WD blue 5,400-rpm thats for sure. The new drives will be used for storage & data backups as I currently have a PNY 1-TB Boot Drive for the OS. Anyways, dont want to keep writing as its starting to become a bible of text....LOL - Anways thanks for the video :)

The "old" 3tb models were terribly unreliable. Who knows about the new ones, yet. The thing to look for is the new sticker and logos when purchasing new Seagate drives. Do not buy "old" Seagate drives if you want to avoid the notoriety that they have made for themselves.

I usually hate seagates (ive thrown out hundreds working as a sys admin) BUT.. I do run the SSHD in my personal gaming rig for games, Couldn't justify having a 2tb ssd just for game boots when the SSHD actually gets quite close have been running it around 6 months now and seems to work well in gaming situations. Once they start making these with a little bit more SSD caching they will be amazing for games (so that it remembers more of its recent files) Cant say how reliable they are yet as this is the only one ive ever played with.

Go work in the enterprise I say. SSHD's are by far one of the most common failed new drives we see. In addition Hybrid drives don't have nearly enough flash to realistically realize any of the benefits of a true SSD, so essentially they're constantly using the flash memory as cache as commonly used data moves in and out of the drive depending on usage. This leads to some crazy flash IO and sooner or later the SSD (eMMC really) stops working properly altogether. Failure rates on SSHD's are crazy high. There's a reason they don't get used in enterprise over conventional mechanical disks or full SSD's. If you're a person that does any sort of High IO or sequential writes to disk (copying pirates moves, yes I know you do) the features of an SSHD are completely negated, even if you game the SSHD flash is barely large enough to cache one game which it anyway has to fetch from mechanical storage first. So for the next game you load it pretty much has to already re-cache the data to the flash memory by fetching from the mechanical disk. So save yourself from the marketing nonsense that is SSHD's and just buy a full SSD and a HDD.

10TB (256 MB Cache) Why can't they put 16GB cache already in those? USB stick small as your Thumbnail have 256GB these days, and hard drives still fiddling with below GB cache!? All these HDD models should be SSHD these days, it would show good competition vs SSD's.

@N0N0111
@N0N0111 7 жыл бұрын
Arnold Tóth Isaszegi Well they use RAM as cache. The 2TB SSHD drive in this video uses 8GB of cache. Adding double amount of RAM for the 10TB model would sure give a lot of performance. And i don't believe it's that hard to manufacture.
@TheHavocInferno
@TheHavocInferno 7 жыл бұрын
Nisco Racing the 8gb in the sshd arent the low level cache. the 256mb in the hdds is lower level cache, a lot faster than the 8gb sshd high level cache. there are different cache levels and the lower you go, the pricier it becomes. 256mb low level cache is already a lot, traditional 1-3TB hdds have 64mb cache. in the typical usage scenario of 10tb hdds, a sshd high level cache would have no benefit.
@totisa93
@totisa93 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I said. Sshd uses nand cache which is way slower then ram. That 256 MB cache is way faster then ram.There is a piramid in the memory hierarchy. Look up that image to understand what I'm talking about
@Luredreier
@Luredreier 5 жыл бұрын
+Nisco Racing The SSHD only have 64 MB of cache that is RAM. The 8 GB only accelerates reads. The 64 GB is what accelerates writes. The 10 TB with 256 MB cache is *much* faster at writes then the SSHD as a result. Those 256 MBs don't wear out like flash does and is far faster. But also way, way, way more expensive, like RAM is more expensive pr GB then SSDs.

I had WD Green died after just 6 months and WD Blue died right about 1 year. While I still have 2 Seagate working just fine since 2007~2008. It all depends on luck, no manufacturer is superior than another.

i had wd my book 3tb with wd green drive inside, it didnt died but i fck up the controller i tried using wd 6tb blue drive on wd my book enclosure it worked for one day but then random errors and what so ever, so i just throwed away the wd my book enclosure, put 6tb drive inside my pc and 3tb drive on ''inateck 3.5'' hdd enclosure'' and still after more than 3 years it works fine - 3tb wd green drive, but my oldest drive which i bought is wd blue 1tb codename wd10ezex - perfect drive still works in my brothers pc up to this day even its 5 years old already

+@@f4rensabri That's not strictly true. You're right that anecdotal evidence isn't worth much. However there are server farms out there who has released data on HD reliability of various HD models. And Seagate tend to do worse then WD there. For these particular drives it depends on what you're using them for though. The Firecudas will have good reliability for read heavy workloads and poor reliability for write heavy workloads. The Ironwolfs are the other way around. For backups I'd proably go WD personally unless I need *tons* of it (then I'd probably go with say five seagate archives in raid 6, as long as write speed don't have to be good)

the standard Seagate Barracuda also comes with 7200rpm, it's basically your average hard drive, and slower than the barracuda pro , running at about 100mb/s
