Short wildlife documentary video detailing the story of a Herring Gull nest on Mount Desert Rock, a small lighthouse island off the shore of Mount Desert Island, Maine. From eggs, to babies, to fledgelings, what does it take to get a seagull out of its nest and into the sky?
Special thanks to College of the Atlantic, Allied Whale, and the Maine Space Grant Consortium for making this video possible. Also to Nancy Andrews and Ben Moss for support throughout the shooting and editing process.

Cool footage. Loads where I live (a town). They nest on roofs, currently there are several nests around me, including above my head. I can see the chicks waddling about.

Lovely to watch, thank you. I have a young gull downstairs with a broken leg, hope we can get him fixed. Looks just like the youngsters at the end!

Thank you so much for those beautiful shots. It’s so hard to find documentaries about gulls. Do you have any further recommendations? I recently moved to the north coast of Germany and those birds started to fascinate me. You can see and hear them everywhere here. I think they use their loud call to communicate through the wind noises. Their grey back may be a camouflage between the rocks to protect their nests. Their flight maneuvers are one of a kind. When they spread their wings and get carried by the wind it’s simply spectacular. I started to portray them photographically.

I’m from Scotland and the castle from the Highlander movie is 5 minutes from my home. I used to work at the shop there back in 2003 and every morning at around 11am this lovely seagull would come and knock on the window with his beak and he’d do that until we opened up a packet of shortbread and gave him a bit. He’d take his shortbread and wander off until the next morning! Always cheered me up to see him saunter up to the floor to ceiling window - he was a glorious boy!

So it took me depressingly long to realize what was throwing me off - her glasses! One half is round and the other is square. In the end, I have come to two possible reasons why she would have this - she is very indecisive OR one lense is for long distance and the other is for magnification. *There is a 3rd option - she wants to let the world know that she is quirky and unique and doesn't care what you think. Also, the video is pretty boring. This is almost certainly why I was so interested in the glasses.

@@WobblesandBean Ah thanks. 'Choking call' is a weird term because they seem pretty chilled when cackling away to themselves. Maybe full of fish and chips? Or maybe just being socially talkative?

I love seagulls, they're so unfairly maligned and they're truly intelligent, charming birds. But I had a hard time getting through your sections. You talk like a valley girl. Adding "like" every fourth word and ending every single sentence with an upward inflection is not pleasant to listen to in any documentary.

Seagulls are known as shite hawks here in the Scottish highlands! I like them though. It’s the crows that are the evil bastards up here - they attack newborn lambs and poke their eyes out. They’ll attack a sheep that’s actually giving birth to get to the lamb.

@@countspankulots4024 I think they're cool but where I live, there is no al fresco dining and people don't sit down outside to eat because when you pick up your food to take a bite, seagulls will land on your shoulder, digging their claws in until you drop your food. Sometimes they fly right into your hand so you drop your food and then their chicks eat it off the ground but usually, they just snatch it out of your hand mid-flight. Even when I go to a place without seagulls, I automatically keep covering my plate and looking at the sky out of habit whenever I eat outside. I still love the seagulls. They don't know any better and they treat eachother like this too. Even if I give them food, they snatch it and run off, expecting me to snatch it back.
