The bright green color of the entanglement stands out on a misty morning at Cape Cross and makes it easy for Naude to find the entangled animal. Vibrant colors are far more noticeable than tiny loops of fishing line or dull brown ropes. The same applies to seals under water - for a naturally curious and inquisitive seal, it is likley that the green rope was simply irresistible. Bright colors are unfortunately not a deterrent, they pose an open invitation to seals to investigate and interact with their unusual find. It is in their nature to do so and they follow their basic instincts, not knowing that they are putting themselves in big danger.

I have donated and let’s hope more people donate for such a worthy cause. We caused this tragedy so we have to correct it. Be aware of all things you discard and ask yourself if an animal can be harmed by your trash you throw out. Caps and lids on jars and bottles, plastic rings, and vegetable mesh bags cut up. Just a couple of minutes of your time can save an animal of a horrible death.

I wonder what the seals think about the rescues. I like to imagine they think, "These tall creatures have magic nets! If you spend a few minutes in one, you will be healed from your pain! Although, SOME healings take longer (cuts)"

So true. Another rescue said it's the plastic waste equivalent to 1600 bin wagons per day. That is unthinkable. 😦 I feel 🤢 thinking of it. And that we caused it. The chap who won the award for the invention of plastic bags wouldn't be so proud now, if he was still alive. Well I hope he wouldn't be.

Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year. We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

На данный момент нам удалось спасти около 3500 капских морских котиков от запутывания в морском мусоре. К сожалению, с помощью наших средств мы лечим только симптомы пластикового кризиса. Эти видеоролики призваны показать последствия этого загрязнения и изменить его корни, а именно: нашу зависимость от одноразового пластика, отсутствие правоохранительных органов на море и недостатки индустрии переработки.

Hi all! The only advantage of multi-colored ropes, fishing lines and other debris is that they can be seen from afar, but they are all equally dangerous for seals and their lives. Don't get me wrong, I love these videos. But it's so bad that Team OCN has to go out everyday and save dozens of seals affected by the same crap. Where I live in the U.S., Afetr a Holiday weekend, I can go out on one certain lake and fill a 55 gallon trash can full of junk lefet over. Many times I have have to save Great Blue Herrons, White Ibis's, and Gulls from left over line with my large fishing net. Try that, it isn't fun and can be dangerous!😠

It is heartbreaking that people do not take ownership of, and deal with, their own rubbish. Even as a small child I was taught by my parents to bring rubbish home if there was no bin handy when we were out. Littering is a blatant disregard for our planet, the creatures we share it with and for those who do the clearing up - and it makes me mad🤬 Thank you for your efforts on behalf of the planet💙

@@RL-RLMy comment was really intended as a general response about all littering in view of the original comment about the rubbish encountered on the lake. It may be ignorance on my part, but I truly was not aware that the British government is the governing body in Nambia. I do hope not - they have enough problems as it is😂i will have to gen up. However, to be fair, whatever else is wrong, the Government here is clamping down on single use plastics such as carrier bags and plastic cutlery, amongst other things. Some manufacturers are also using less plastic packaging, and fewer black plastic trays are being used for food because they are difficult to recycle. Although, it is far from perfect, and I am not trying to pretend otherwise, it is at least a start.😊

I must admit to ignorance if Britain is truly a governing body in Namibia. If I find we are, I will be emailing my MP and recommending that he watches some OCN videos. Here, the Government has been some clamping down on single use plastics such as cutlery and straws, amongst others, with a charge for single use bags and disposable vapes in their sights Some supermarkets will take for recycling flexible plastics that can't go in with household recycling; manufacturers are using a bit less plastic packaging and fewer black plastic food trays due to the difficulties of recycling them. It's certainly not ideal, and I am not going to pretend otherwise, but it is a small step forward😊

Some of these rescued seals have horrific wounds. If possible, if you guys re-net some of these seals so we can see how they are healing, I would be thankful. It is so heart breaking to see that some of these seals are in great pain, especially the one that had a gaping wound in his side from a very small, thin piece of fishing line. So much damage from something so small. It boggles my mind to see how many animals are in trouble there, which means that there is an astronomical amount of sea animals around the world that are suffering a horrible fate because they don’t have you guys to help them. “You guys” is a slang that includes women too. It’s just an expression we use. I have noticed that there are women helping too.

Of course, he won’t find him, but his mother will find him. They recognize their children by their voices, and as soon as they get hungry and call for mom, she will come.

Besides, ONC always takes a few weeks "off" when female seals give birth every year. Thus, neither the weeks-old pups nor their mothers are under stress. ONC waits until the pups are big enough to swim properly and to come back to the shore before starting the rescues again. 😊

Every week, lactating females depart the colony to forage around sunrise to come back between dusk and early morning several days later. Mums and pups are therefore used to be separated and always manage to reunite thanks to their unique call and scent.

Наша система управления отходами полностью не работает, и мы все несем за это ответственность. То, что мы выбрасываем, не исчезает волшебным образом. Большая часть мусора выбрасывается в дикую природу (на свалки и в другие места), большая часть попадает в океаны, ежегодно мучая и убивая миллионы морских животных. Когда пластик был впервые создан, мы не особо задумывались о его стратегии окончания срока службы, мы предпочли удобство экологичности и решили отложить его в сторону и надеяться, что сможем разобраться с ним когда-нибудь позже. Мы все несем ответственность за внесение изменений, чтобы обеспечить более чистое будущее для этой планеты и ее океанов.

Humans have slaughtered Cape fur seals for centuries, so they perceive us as predators. Land not being their element, they will always run to the water for safety when we approach.

Hi. I have seen videos on their channel of rescues of a dolphin, a jackal, and sharks - and a bird entangled on a buoy that gave Naude some serious attitude when being rescued. Some of the videos do go back in time a bit, though. Unfortunately, poor playful seals are entangled all the time it seems, and so benefit from the regular patrols made by OCN to look for them. Are you still working the beaches with only one team, or are you expanding? Either way it is obviously fruitful to patrol Mowe Bay now too. The terrain looks challenging for you all to run and rescue. Does it get as slippery as Cape Cross? (sorry for the 20 questions...) 🌊🦭✂️🌍💙
