I had this vision that if I put a sealant down the rain would come and the water would stay on top of the blocks then it would freeze over and become slippy,think I've seen an anti-slip powder added to some cheaper block sealants.

I just use a cheap garden sprayer from the likes of b+m, home bargains, the range. Only cost about £10 Then just chuck it after the job. Just factor it into the price, probably saved me days of work all together. Also get much better coverage and uniform finish.

I sealed my drive but after a year the sealed sand starts to crack and algie forms. It's a nightmare to power wash out all the old sealed sand. My drive has a mortar base so no need for sand. I never use sand now on my drive as I think it's messy. I now seal my unwanted drive which looks great and no hassle to clean with pressure washer.

Any acrylic sealer will leave a damp look finish. It will give a charcoal block a richer deeper look. The only downside is this is purely cosmetic and doesn't tend to last long. The UV resistance on sealers isn't overly great and tends to fade after around 12months.

Thanks for your videos! But I don't get how to keep the my pavers in good condition. . I just bought a fairly big property that is in fair to poor condition landscape wise. .. obviously we try to make it as good as we can and the pavers are on the list.. the driveway is about 40m long by 8m wide.. and there is a walkway all around the house with wide seems between the pavers (driveway are tight seems)... do you think it's a waste of time to use regular sand (finest I can find at a bulk landscape materal shop?), what would you use to fill the wide gaps between the pavers (1inch deep by 1/2 wide)... walkway is about 25 meters long, 2m wide.. and also to remove all the dirt and mole I have a 2500psi gas pressure washer with a surface cleaner.. do you recommend the turbo nozzle or the surface cleaner should do a descent job? ... I'm not scared of hard work and wish to make my pavers look good again.. there is a lot of mole, weeds and dirt right now..

blueliontime thanks...price varies really. To be honest it's not one of my favourite jobs as it can sometimes be a ball ache, more so on block pave patios as they are rarely square and you have to cut the edges in. I would normally charge between £1.50 - £2.00 a sqm per coat minus the product or materials.

@@carlbishop3718 hi carl, I've never sprayed it so can't say but this stuff is a 2 coat application so you would need 2 sprayers. It would depend how big the area is but it starts hardening after a couple hours. Problem with spraying anything like this is it's difficult to control the application effectively, ensuring you get enough into the joints and an even coverage could be tricky.

How well does it prevent weed growth? on a 3 year old patio that is cleaned well and re pointed aferwards?
@DirtyDriveAway
@DirtyDriveAway 6 жыл бұрын
Mark Evans hi mark, this sealer is only designed for block paving. When you say re pointed are you refering to mortar/cement or do you have block pave and mean re sanded? When used properly this sealer will bind the sand making it go solid, in turn this stops weeds from penetrating the joints. The sealer will naturally break down after 3-5 years depending on traffic. Block paved areas ideally should only be cleaned and sanded every 2-3 years, consistent washing and removal of sand can cause the blocks to shift. Phill
@lamarr1986
@lamarr1986 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Phil that makes sense, have block paving and just mean re sanding the joints yeah. My only concern is I thoroughly pressure hose every year (and blast out 4 bags or more of sand in the process) but weeds come back within weeks, trying the more expensive natural weed killing sand with lime in, seems to help a little but still get weeds...don't want to use weed killer...do you think if I pressure hose thoroughly then seal soon as its dry after re sanding it could keep down weeds that are already now present under the blocks?
@DirtyDriveAway
@DirtyDriveAway 6 жыл бұрын
Mark Evans hi mark yes using a good quality sealer will bind the sand making weed growth very hard. This Resiblock stuff is good but pricey. You could also consider a polymeric jointing sand which also sets hard when activated with water. Problem with sealers that you need good weather, the blocks need 48hrs dry time after cleaning and the good stuff is a 2 coat application which ideally needs to be done within 24 hrs of each other and with no chance of rain within 12 hrs of applying. Not always an easy task. Oh and don't apply in above 30 degrees.

Does sealer reduce the permeability of the patio/drive i.e. flood?
@DirtyDriveAway
@DirtyDriveAway 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes it will. Using most sealers will solidify the jointing sand and make it inpermeable. If pooling or flooding is an issue then using a sealer will make it worse. There are permeable sealers available predominantly for SUDS compliance but they are a lot more money.
@kenmay1572

@DirtyDriveAway
@DirtyDriveAway 4 жыл бұрын
@@kenmay1572 oh yeah that may cause an issue. You would need to use something like resiblock envirofix which is permeable. The other advantage you would have by sealing using envirofix is that it will still bind the sand meaning it won't come out when it rains. www.resiblock.com/product/resiblock-envirofix/

@DirtyDriveAway

You'll get a little bit of sand stick, but if your sanding is good and below the chamfers of the block it should be kept to a minimum. If you sand joints are flush or too high the brush and roller will pull the sand out.

Dont apply resiblock superior with a roller. Put it in a watering can then pour, spreading with a large squeegee (cut in the around the edges as per the video). Watering can ensures the sealant goes where it needs to in the right quantities. Applying with a roller will not apply enough sealant and can pull the kiln dried sand out of the joints when you go over it.
@DirtyDriveAway
@DirtyDriveAway 4 жыл бұрын
Been there tried that and it's a waste of sealer. If the area is sanded properly and blown off with a blower you should get very little sand pull. A watering can puts down too much sealer in an uncontrolled manner, resiblock only recommend a watering can when using the trade sealer. Squeegees don't work well enough, even resiblocks squeegee doesn't do a great job especially with acrylic sealer as it hardens the blade. That's why this stuff is 2 coat (4hrs between) so that you can flood the joints on the first coat (which is easy with a roller)
@mikewood6528
@mikewood6528 4 жыл бұрын
Dirty Drive-Away I’ve done both and rollering it on just didn’t give enough coverage. If your spending the money on Resiblock I’d personally allow for a little excess waste that I can work in rather than not have the area covered properly with a consistent enough coating.
@DirtyDriveAway
@DirtyDriveAway 4 жыл бұрын
@@mikewood6528 it all depends on your preference and how you want to do it. I'm an approved resiblock contractor and wastage just isn't an option. If your rollering properly and squeezing the sealer out the roller it will flood the joints enough. Too much sealer on the blocks can lead to pooling and imperfections in the finish. You can technically keep pouring the sealer and the sand will absorb it because the whole drive sits on a sand bed. Yes you can keep flooding joints but at the end of the day resiblocks coverage is pretty much bang on when rollering. Have a look at my other sealing video on my channel.

@DirtyDriveAway
@DirtyDriveAway 6 жыл бұрын
Paul RF hey paul, sealing will protect the blocks and help prevent weeds etc but its quite pricey for this stuff. This perticular customer only wanted to stump for 1 coat, well block pave is 2 coat with this resiblock superior, so technically they only got half the long term result. This sealer offers a no oil stain guarentee meaning if you spill oil on it after sealing you can just wipe it off with a cloth and it wont stain.

how do you know thers still old sealer allready down is ok too cover over with another sealer bud
@DirtyDriveAway
@DirtyDriveAway 3 жыл бұрын
If its been previously sealed, less than 5 years, I would expect the joint sand to still be hard. Depending on the type of sealer you can usually overcoat again after 2-3years. Polyurethane sealers are harder and tend to take more weathering before being scuffed up enough for another coat to stick. Water based and acrylic sealers don't mix well so if a water based sealer has been used it would have needed to of worn off before re coating with acrylic/PU.

SIMPLE SRAY IT ON .
@DirtyDriveAway
@DirtyDriveAway 3 жыл бұрын
Its not as simple as that. Firstly acrylic sealers start to harden pretty quickly meaning the spray nozzle starts to gunk up fairly fast, sprayers dont offer the control a roller does and it ends up on places it shouldn't. In order to get the joints to set properly they need to be flooded with sealer, unless you heavily spray each joint you won't get a full bond, especially on larger style blocks. Invariably when using a sprayer you over saturate the blocks and have to roller it anyway to help prevent patching. If you want it done properly then roller it, if you want to tosh it on quickly without worrying about the joints or where it goes then spray it.
