The tips you give are so clearly those from a man who has done a lifetime of camping and hammocking. It's unreal to see how many little things you do that I haven't yet done to improve the experience. That said, that's a big part of why I am here. I love to see the nuances of a life on the trail. I have been employing your techniques for staying dry, and warm, and I'm also starting to adopt the taste for crappy instant coffee in the hammock before getting up. Plus, the mandolin absolutely got me back into me teen Zep phase.

In the sewing section in Walmart, little tubes for a buck. That tube will do both sides of your tarp. Its silicone, but seems to have an ingredient which makes it easier to apply and not quite so darn sticky. I occasionally will sew up a tarp and have had good luck with it. Very pliable and long lasting

The very best, most precise and funnest (by far) method of application is to daub the seam sealant on the stitch line, then use ones nose to thoroughly work the sealant into the stitch holes and even into the very fibres of the threads. The benefits of this (admittedly very advanced) technique are manifold. Chief among them, however, are: 1)It keeps ones eyes right on task, permitting of great precision; absolute thoroughness of workmanship & very keen concentration upon the critical task. 2)I forget the second, but, believe me, it's also chiefest. Probably.🤷🏻‍♂️

Its a good idea to set your tarp up taut before applying the seam sealer. The more exposed the seams are when being sealed, the better seal you will get

thanks, Shug. did my first seam seal on a tarp just two weeks ago. wasn't pretty and not what anyone would consider a factory sealed job, but after watching this I feel a lot better about the way I had to try to do it in my small kitchen with limited space and in small increments. the best part of the whole thing was that I put it up in SE MN last week before we got the snow and rain that cold-soaked everything and it worked! Hurray! so all my worry about getting it 'just right' was for naught and after watching this I know a couple of easier things/ways to do it on my second one, which will be in a week or so when I get the time.

Nice! I might get that Dutch tarp that is 4 point with a few extra tie outs & no seam. It is like 12.5 foot on the ridge & one can do a few funky things with it, given the tie outs. I'd change the fact it is 12 feet the other way though. I'd take it more like 10 or 11 feet. Maybe someday I will build a custom Sector Seven Franken Tarp.

Being old and cheap, I tend to to buy cheapo, thin, lightweight tarps because they are light and compact (and cheap). They require seam-sealing because I worry about poorly sewn seams and corners leaking of course. But there is another reason to apply seam sealer, especially when the stitching is less-than-perfect. I find that the sealer acts like glue and reduces the chance that a loose thread will continue to unravel and allow a seam or pull-out to come apart. Of course, this is less of a problem on a higher-quality piece of gear, but anything sewn can potentially come un-sewn, and a little bit of insurance is a good thing.

We've been in many storms in our tent and mostly dry inside. Did get a bit of moisture inside once which I assumed, incorrectly I guess, that it was condensation. I seam sealed with regular clear Silicone. Used the foam brush to apply it. Just send it, it will be OK. 😄🖐👍

Thanks Shug for another great instructional video. I just used my new Dutchware Bonded Sil-Poly Tarp in snow and freezing rain this past weekend. Dutch just made seam sealing obsolete for affordable tarps.

Awesome video Shug thanks! I too have seam sealed many, many tarps and tents and read a tip years ago about using Permatex 81730 flowable silicone windshield and glass sealer - and I've never looked back. Flowable being the key term. It comes with a nozzle that you can cut the size of hole you want and I use that and push the bead into the threads with my fingers while wearing nitrile gloves. Works fantastically well. Also got a tip to load up a curved tip dental syringe with your sealer of choice- will try that too next time.

Thus why there is a link for it below the video. I've yet to use it but hear from a lot on hammock forums how well it works. Yessir!
