Hey Tryane! You are SO welcome. I struggled with the solution for this for weeks after I got my Model 3. It was driving me nuts! It would be so nice if Tesla added "USB" as one of the music sources. Then, the voice command wouldn't even be necessary. But in the meantime, it's a quick and easy patch.

After a recent Tesla software update (2024.01.09), when I invoke "play a song from usb" command, it gives me options just from streaming channels related with "USB" band names and song titles. Frustrating. We need to find another workaround.

You need 2 partitions minimum. Use the car to format the drive first, then take it to your PC/MAC and delete the main partition and then create two of them (three if you want lightshow to work but I haven't tested this yet). This will ensure that the drive is in the correct partition layout. Format each partition to ExFat, and label the first one 'TeslaCam'. The second one can be called whatever (I used 'TeslaMedia'). However, the fact that the USB implementation is shite, (only one port in the car works and its the one in the glovebox that's really difficult to reach, apart from a long list of other issues), I will have to get around to hacking my M3 to get carplay working, or i'm going to have to add another screen. Elon claiming that his system is better, shows how deluded he really is.

From the dashcam section of the Tesla Model 3 owners manual: "For some vehicles manufactured after approximately November 1, 2021, the center console USB ports may only support charging devices. Use the USB port inside the glove box for all other functions." I would advise you to use the glovebox USB to store your dashcam and music folders. Partition the USB drive first.

It's only in the glovebox where you can plug a drive. The others can only charge. Absolutely ridiculous.

So far, I haven't noticed this issue (still on 2023.44.30.8), but I will look into this when I can start testing. In the meantime, another really good option is to set up automatic streaming music from your phone via bluetooth.

Thanks! If I understand you correctly, you switch between drives, depending on what music you're in the mood for? The solution would be to combine them ALL your music into ONE property formatted drive. Place them in different folders if you wish. When you start up the car after it has been asleep and say "play a song from USB", it will return to the last folder/song played. Insofar as I know, our Model 3's only have two data USB ports. All the rest are power only. I suppose you could dedicate one data port to Teslacam footage and the other to music. BTW, your Tesla USB will play .mp3, .wav and FLAC files. With FLAC, you're going to get the highest possible fidelity. Much better than streaming.

@@tesladura3085 thanks for your reply. Yeah, I've got several Coby drives with lots of different music, all .wav files. Not sure why, but at least 60% of any tracks on any of the drives will not load in my model 3. Going to try to use console C inputs (USB to C) to see if that makes any difference. By the way, just took delivery on Feb 11. The car has been FANTASTIC!

Sure, that's always an option. But unless I'm mistaken, the audio quality won't be as good over Bluetooth and I'm not sure if you can pick up where you left off with Bluetooth, either. I really haven't explored this option. Thanks!

Best suggestion is to google "how to partition USB drive". It's a process, but it's very easy. You essentially do it in disk management under Windows. If you have a Mac, I don't have a clue, but I imagine there is an equally straightforward way.

@@kenxuan5194 If you have a newer Model 3 that has a USB in the glove box, no. That's because it is your only data USB port. The other two under the console are for power only. If you want boombox stuff, simply create a USB drive for the glove box with three drive partitions, instead of two. Hope this helps?

@@kenxuan5194 you can buy a USB hub that plugs into the USB in the glovebox. Has ports for the Dashcam flash drive, plus additional USB ports. I have a thumb drive with custom LightShow files on it. Could probably do the same for audio files.

Assuming you are using Windows: 1. Right-click This PC and select Manage. 2. Open Disk Management. 3 . Select the disk from which you want to make a partition. 4. Right-click the Unpartitioned space in the bottom pane and select New Simple Volume. 5. Enter the size and click next, and you are done.

Don't forget it needs to be ExFAT format also.

There is shuffle for USB audio, just to be clear. You can also choose favorites. Cheers. I really wish that they could leave the USB power on, without significant phantom drain. BTW, since upgrading my phone, I have started using an automated routine to automatically start playing music via Bluetooth upon entering the car. It works really well, too.
