I had the pleasure and good luck to meet him at the beginning of the 90s and to spend an hour chatting and laughing about everything and anything while passing the time until our delayed flights were called. Absolutely charming and a perfect gentleman and I will never forget what he told me before parting. "You young lady have the most genuine smile and laughter I have encountered in a long time, please, never change!" Needless to say, I took his advice.

I remember one time I was in the launderette waiting for my underwear to dry and Sean walked in to check on the kilts he was washing. We sat and chatted and laughed until his kilts were clean. He even showed me the real Scottish way of wearing a kilt and we laughed some more. On his way out he turned and said to me, "John" - for that is my name - "don't ever let the bastards grind you down. Fight to your final breath", and I've lived by those words ever since. Wonderful man.

@@UncompressedWAVmusic well, it was a more fatherly approach. We were sitting in a corner of Frankfurt Airport during a massive flight delay due to a bomb scare. He saw the book I read and remarked he had too and that it was a good one. He had a beard and I didn't recognize him straight away, when I did and asked him why he is not in the VIP lounge, he laughed and that broke the ice. He was on his way to his home and wife.

Sean hated Tories. He did a lot of work for Scottish labour workers, made documentaries on Scotland's labour force and pumped huge amounts of money into his education trust foundation for children in poverty, which he established. He was also fairly politically active in Scotland but kept his work largely to himself. I only just learned recently that he donated his entire pay-cheque for Diamonds Are Forever to the foundation, as well as his entire $250,000 salary for his small role in Robin Hood and millions more from other earnings, including from doing Never Say Never Again. I always assumed he was just greedy demanding higher pay for Bond and other later roles, but it turns out he was just getting as much as he possibly could out of gangsterish Hollywood producers to pump into good causes.

I stil rember the names of my colleagues Abukar Keynan, Mohamed Wehlie, Abdiqadir Yariisow, Ducale Mohamed, Abdirashid Abdillahi, Mohamed Abdillahi etc all of which I don't have the least clue about where are they now. That's a lovely snapshot of a different era. I was likely less than one year old at the time, and shillings had well and truly turned to cents by the time I saw my first big screen movie, so I only got to see most of the older Bond movies on TV. The first newly released Bond movie I saw in a cinema wasn't until The Spy Who Loved Me (where Roger Moore filled the role well enough but his wasn't a patch on Sean Connery's 007).

THats an endless debate. Never Say Never Again stunk to high heaven. Dr. No was a little bit ridiculous. From Russia with Love was about the best bond film. The best spy films featured George Smiley, not James Bond. Dalton apparantly 'looked' the most like Fleming described, but looked a bit too much like a movie actor. It doesn't look like boris had an answer to someone of Connery's stature and ability, charisma and delivery. Connery's honesty and self awareness played a large part in that ability and they are characteristics boris would do well to acquire before he destroys the nation of Britain along with his paymaster mates in corporations. I don't hold out much hope in that regard from what I've witnessed publicly of boris' moral heft.

@@brianwheeldon4643 Well thank your for that Far Left observation. Not that it had any relevance given the date of the programme. Why would or should Boris 'have had an answer'? What part of 'he was a guest not the interviewer' don't you quite understand? Boris, in 2003, was a new, but highly popular MP for Henley, the Editor of the Spectator and the author of more than one book. It was why he was on that programme. He had his own credentials. The fact he deferred to a great actor and behaved with impeccable manners would, to normal people, be a good thing. it's possible Connery considered Johnson a total cunt liable to mess up anything he'd touch. And so it was likely with utmost sincerity he wished for Boris Johnson to become chief and thus positioned to touch the Tories up real good. That Boris Johnson as party leader would also become prime minister and able to work his special magic with an entire nation was probably an unforeseen consequence as far as Mr. Connery was concerned.

I read in one of the memorial articles that he was close to signing on to a Brett Ratner film called Josiah’s Canon, but Ratner stood Connery up for a script meeting. Connery was already irritated when his inquiry to Ratner on how he planned to shoot the movie was "Movie Magic" the day before. He called Ratner's people quite pissed when he didn't show and while on the phone with them saw Ratner on TV in the audience of the French Open and quit right there. Connery retired soon after. He did say the one film he would come back for was another Indiana Jones film. I wonder if he just wasn't in the best of health by then and in a classy way just said retirement was too much fun.
