Dealing with one's own sexuality can be very difficult. Even though there's more understanding and tolerance and acceptance today, it can be very difficult for some based on upbringing, societal pressures, and geographic location.
"Hero," tells the tale of the struggles men and women face (both young and older) when they come to their own truth and decide it's time to truly be themselves. "Hero," was inspired by episode 3:14 of TV's "Glee." The episode was called "On My Way." The episode hit several painful memories for Sean Ensign.
Sean, too, struggled to be himself during his early years of life. from a young age, Sean always knew he was different and he felt different. He came out to his family and friends in 1992 (during his sophomore year of college). At this time, being "gay," was not widely accepted like it is today. Sean had to hide who he was for years in fear of getting "the shit beat out of him."
When Sean finally came out, several of his friends stopped talking and interacting with him. Even though, as many say, "Well... they weren't your true friends." It still hurt nonetheless. At the time, Sean wasn't even speaking to his mother for other reasons. His father, being considerably older (he was born in 1925) also had major difficulties with Sean's sexuality. It took time awhile for him to come around, but he did eventually. Sean's youngest brother also had issues with it, and to this day their relationship is severely strained.
Because of the emotional stress and duress Sean was under, he moved to Plainfield, NJ. (Long story, don't ask). While there, he met a man whom he fell in love with. This was Sean's very first significant relationship. Not even in high school, did Sean have a relationship like this. The man was a narcissist and a player and broke Sean's heart. Sean's relationship with his family and friends (not all his friends... some stood by him and are still friends today) was in shambles, his heart was broken (again, he had never been in a true relationship before... this was the first), and he felt he had nothing else.
At this time, Sean was 20 years old (almost 21) and he contemplated suicide and actually attempted. But, fortunately, fate intervened. Sean had an angel watching over him. Based on Sean's action and outcome, therapy was required. During therapy, the nurse taking care of Sean changed and saved his life. It was there that Sean decided he too wanted to become a nurse and help save other people's lives.
Sean did just that. He finished his undergrad at The University of Akron, earning a Bachelor's in the Science of Nursing in 1998. Later Sean advanced his degree to a Master's of Nursing Anesthesia in 2017. During this whole time, Sean was and remains a singer, songwriter, musician, and music producer bringing you songs like "Hero."
