He explained it in a live that Alex did with him. It's about him being mad at her in the beginning. As the song progresses, she starts becoming mad at him until the end when he realizes he lost his chance and the hug was representing him reaching for her. She was supposed to throw his arms off but he got carried away and instead swung her around.
