Look at people like Pomare, Carroll, and the leaders of the late 19th century/early 20th century, or Apirana Ngata and his era of the 1930s on. Look at Michael King’s book about moko, and see the old kuia. I suggest you look at the first definition of Māori from the Waitangi Tribunal, which was someone with 50% Māori ancestry. I look at the photographs of my great-great grandmother on my mother’s side, and my great-great grandmother on my father’s side, and I see it there. Whereas I look like Joanna/Mihinarangi, blonde, and with little discernible Māori heritage to observe. Obviously we can still be proud of our Māori heritage, but to deny the rest, the majority, of our background lacks balance and is not the complete truth.
