I love scientists being human and merging with each other and all of us in honesty. Thank you for sharing these important thoughts and observations through the lens of science.

Mitochondrial acquisition changed energy and metabolic dynamics of cells in a dramatic way which likely to have paved way for robust multicellularity.

I have also heard about the oxygen requirement for multicellularity. The earth did not have enough oxygen to support eukaryotic life until the Cambrian explosion.

I've become interested in the time it took to become multi cellular life on earth, its shocking how long there was just single celled life, before the Cambrian explosion. all of a sudden It seems to be practically impossible for there to have been complex life on mars, past single celled. Once you learn how symbiosis was critical to becoming an intelligent species, life elsewhere becomes even more special and possibly rare.

My understanding is that there are strains of microbes that have optional multicellular capability. When nutrients are plentiful the cells find themselves surrounded by compatriots, and then parts of their genome are expressed that has them sticking to each other, and proceeding to differentiation into cells with specialized functions. My understanding is that these strains retain capability to exist in unicellular mode. So: they are capable of multicellular existence, but it is not an obligatory multicellular existence. It seems to me that retaining capabililty fo uni-cellular existence makes an organism quite robust. Given that availability of nutrients will vary it seems plausible to me that obligatory multicellular forms of life are at an evolutionary disadvantage.

Kudos, I can only imagine the breakthroughs in biology which will happen as a result of this line of reasoning. Also, there could be cultural ramifications because it is kind of hard to argue against evolution, when you can do experiments using it.

This conversation evolved pretty much like a snowflake yeast. Could there be such a thing as an entangled conversation? Or is that the definition of a mental illness? Or a co-dependency? Or a liturgy?

You got much interesting discussion. I wonder if you can have an episode about modern totalitarian regimes? Groupthink and pressure to not be allowed speaking out without being put names on an bullied.
