Oh you hit a nerve with me saying Prestige. It’s one of my favorite Nolan movies. I thought you would’ve said Tenet for sure.

My least favorite movies from the following directors. Steven Spielberg- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom- Honestly I found this movie just so unsettling to me. Christopher Nolan- Interstellar- I just feel like this movie dragged on despite the great effects in the film. James Gunn- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2- I felt like this movie is missing something. Denis Villeneuve- Arrival- I don't hate this film, but out of the three that I've seen I like the other 2 films better than Arrival. Sam Raimi- Spiderman 2002- This is a hot take, but I found this movie a tad unsettling and the jokes in the film were way too cheesy for me.

Agree with you about James Cameron. I actually think PIRANHA 2 is a fun little piece of enjoyable schlock and I would happily rewatch it again over AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER, which was lifeless and self-indulgent.

For Top Tier directors, I’d go: James Cameron - Piranha II: The Spawning-This one’s a bit of a cheat because it’s not technically a James Cameron film, but when you learned about the production of this film involving Cameron, it makes an already really bad “B” movie even worse David Fincher - Alien 3-By no means is Fincher to blame for this cinematic middle finger to James Cameron’s Aliens, but still, it’s a movie built on an entirely faulty foundation that actively steps on my toes James Gunn - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2-While I still think is a pretty decent movie, I don’t think this movie fully comes together because of its weaker story structure and tonal inconsistencies, in particular, its more mean spirited humor Christopher Nolan - Following-Because of its incredibly low budget, this movie shows Nolan’s potential as a storyteller, even if the actual movie isn’t the easiest to watch or fully follow along with Sam Raimi - Oz the Great and Powerful-As a massive Raimi fan, I find it rather unfortunate how devoid of wonder and magic I think this Wizard of Oz film is Matt Reeves - The Pallbearer-For how talented Reeves has proved himself after this film, his directorial debut didn’t show those talents because it’s a rom com, whereas the rest of his films have darker tones and elements Martin Scorsese - Boxcar Bertha-Like with pretty much every Scorsese film, there’s a certain amount of artistic merit here, but when the story and characters aren’t engaging, the movie feels like it was filmed and released several years before it actually hit theaters, which isn’t in this one’s favor Steven Spielberg - 1941-A complete and total misfire that consists of way too much physical comedy for a WWII film, as well as a movie of a tone, story, and quality level that doesn’t make sense in Spielberg’s phenomenal filmography Quentin Tarantino - Death Proof-Even though it’s still has Tarantino’s flavor of characters and dialogue, I don’t think Tarantino’s strengths overlap with what Grindhouse films serve up, making for the only Tarantino film I wouldn’t go positive on Denis Villeneuve - Enemy-While there are plenty of well done technical elements to this film, this isn’t a form of storytelling I connect with much, which doesn’t make for a satisfying experience for me

My Idol on Clarinet, Artie Shaw, who died at 94 on my birthday, had A Tenor Sax Player, by the name of Georgie Auld, who, in an Ironic Way, plays an Artie Shaw Bandleader/Clarinetist, Frankie Carle, in New York New York. I think that it's a decent movie, bur, 1941 left so much to be desired, especially when you're getting The 1980s A&C (Aykroyd/Belushi were so Abbott & Costello like, no to make a big deal, rather than do 1941 the way it was done, he should have done as Landis did with The Blues Brothers).

Since you have a hot take about Nolan I'll share mine: Interstellar is the worst of his movies for me. I never really connected with it. The twist just doesn't work for me, and it's almost too gut wrenching to the point where it's exhausting to watch. Maybe I watched it in a weird context but it's just never worked for me.

Man, great video stretch Sean! QT-The Hateful Eight. I can't finish this one. Great cast and good production. Solid score but the story doesn't engage with me and I tap my foot leading up to the whodunnit bit. Not bad but just a bit dull. Denis Villeavnue -Sicario- A solid thriller with a great cast and script but easily the weakest of The Frontier trilogy. I appreciate its honesty but the structure of the last act doesn't quite work me. Steven Speilberg-Duel. I need to see a few more from him. The tension is very good paving the road for Jaws but tense leads to boring and it doesn't recover. After The Fabelmans, I respect it more. James Gunn-Super. I prefer Kick Ass of the pair. The cast is great, the script is going for it big time and score is terrific but Gunn definitely improved on these specific aspects in his next several movies. I'd rewatch any of his other movies or Kick Ass before this one. James Cameron-Piranha II: The Spawning. As a goofy b movie, this is kinda fun and has a lot of so bad its stupid energy. As a movie from one of the greatest directors of all time, its terrible. You can tell this was a truck driver being screwed by a studio. Christopher Nolan-Tenet-A good enough technical flex with some decent action that's tanked by a weak script, garbage sound mixing, and a plot that's impossible to take seriously no matter how hard it asks you to. Sam Raimi-Crimewave. I appreciate the swing after Evil Dead but you can see he's still green. It doesn't feel balanced in concept and meanders in the third act. The doors scene and the apartment destruction is memorable but it feel like a short film that needs the big budget treatment Evil Dead got. I can see a remake of it from Raimi or anyone else could be really interesting. David Fincher-Alien 3- If not for the first ten minutes, I might defend this one. The direction stands out in the franchise, some of the story ideas are interesting and its decently watchable unlike the prequels. But that opening is annoying. It brings everything down. Martin Scorsese-Boxcar Bertha. In the hands of the Cohen Brothers, this could've been a solid caper story. Here, it's fine. The story is okay, the acting is okay, the tone is terribly misbalanced and it lacks any of his considerable talent. Thankfully he got so much better. Matt Reeves-Let Them In. Just a bit dull for me. The cast is solid but I've seen this story much better. Forgettable.

New York New York as Marty’s worst film is an interesting pick by you, Sean. I didn’t see your Scorsese rankings from last year. I’ve seen a little of NY NY but it didn’t seem all that interesting. I thought you were going to pick Boxcar Bertha. I actually like that movie. It’s still one of his worst but it’s still not that terrible. My least favorite from more of his later works from 90s and after is Gangs of New York. After that awesome opening scene, I just can’t get into it. Cameron Diaz was a miscast and had zero chemistry with Leo. Yes, Death Proof is definitely my least favorite from Tarantino. Like way, way behind the other 8 movies he made if you consider Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 as one film. I did like some of the shots of women talking. We got Ahsoka and Hera in it. When Zoë Bell was hanging on a moving car, that was pretty awesome. But overall, very forgettable. The only one of Tarantino’s I don’t have the urge to watch again. Shame that The Movie Critic got cancelled. While Coppola has a new movie and he’s already in his 80s like Scorsese.

Holy crap! I actually was a production assistant on Crime Waves. At the time they called it the XYZ murders. I got to say though they were great guys and Bruce Campbell was terrific!

I was actually a little shocked when i heard, "The Prestige" as your least favorite Nolan film. However, I also acknowledge that art is subjective, so everyone's opinion isn't going to be the same. Everybody gets something different out of it based on their own personal likes and dislikes. I would say 99% of your opinions are MY opinions as well. The only thing that really bothered me about The Prestige, was that I could EASILY tell that the mystery man that they were trying to conceal (in the hat, glasses, and fake beard and mustache) was so obviously Christian Bale. I didn't know what his character was supposed to mean on first viewing, but I knew there was going to be a big reveal with that character. I think Nolan messed up by showing his face, even if it was in quick glimpses, because it didn't fool me for a second, because I knew that that was Christian Bale.

When people rank death proof as his worst film, do people just forget that Quentin Tarantino said himself that death proof is his worst work? If you look on KZfaq, he said it during Django unchained’s released. He said if it’s the worst I’m going to get, then I’m okay with it. 😅 Death proof is a film with great moments, but it’s not one of his best works at all, when it comes to dialogue. It’s too realistic, and none of it is rememberable. But I personally love how he filmed the lap dance scene and the car chase scene. That chase scene was godly filmed. 😈

Ridley Scott -Prometheus Steven Spielberg - Hook James Cameron - Titanic, Avatar, Last Action Hero JJ Abrams - Everything he’s made except Super 8

The USO dance sequence, not to mention good performances from reserved (Robert Stack,) to zany (Warren Oates, Slim Pickens) put 1941 above other Spielberg duds with nothing memorable like Always, the Tourist, or let’s face it, even the garish waste of talent that is Hook. The capper is that the 1941 score is recognized, regardless of the narrative content, as one of Williams’ best, meaning an all-time great. The music and terrific technical production alone make it watchable. Even Kubrick told Spielberg as much (he said to Steven “I liked it. But it’s not funny.”). I’d fire it up any day before watching War Horse again.

Probably alone in this opinion, but the Prestige by Christopher Nolan. Unlikeable characters and it delves into the supernatural during the finale when the whole movie prior was practical. Edit: finished the video, i feel totally vindicated

I'm a kid of the 90's so I enjoy films but I don't gravitate to a lot of horror. I've got to be in the mood for comedy. So, I'm sure I've missed some good directors but here would be my top 5. 5. Chris Columbus and for his worst, I'm going to go with Pixels. I've seen it twice and I'm always dissatisfied with the emotional payoff at the end. 4. James Cameron- Avatar the story just seems like it's already been done. The plot was boring. 3. Steven Spielberg- The Lost World: Jurassic Park. All the films that came after the classic have let me down in one way or another. It's watchable but just a huge letdown. 2. John Lasseter- Cars 2 didn't like the focus on Mader. 1. David Fincher- Fight Club the reveal that Brad Pitt was all in his head was meh.

I actually agree with you on The Prestige. It is amazing the first time, but like a magic trick, once you know it, it loses all value. This is because you have bad characters. They are well-acted bad characters, and I don't mean "bad" as in "villain". They are just callous, petty, unlikeable pricks . . . and thay is what you are left with after you know the movie's magic trick. My least favorite from him would actually be Tenet. Why? IMO, the movie is so in love with its unique style and overly complicated gimmick, and so focused on it, that he allowed mediocre character writing, which he normally does not stand for. It felt like he was just trying to dare his audience, saying "Oh, you think Inception was complicated? This will be 10x more complicated!" For perspective, I think his best films are Memento, The Dark Knight, Inception, and Oppenheimer. For David Fincher, we all know what the answer is, even if it wasn't really his fault. Tarantino, it is Death Proof, which I actually think IS a bad movie, BECAUSE it is not bad enough! With Planet Terror, Robeet Rodriguez understood the assignment and delivered a shlocky grindhouse B-movie. With Death Proof, it is mostly driven by dialogue, which is pretty much the antithesis to the spirit of grindhouse. The moments where he does deliver the shlock are great, but Tarantino couldn't help himself. His writing style made this an impossible assignment for him.

Ouch! The Prestige is actually my favorite Nolan film😥 I knew Alien 3 was coming as soon as I heard "Fincher", but despite the fact that this was very early Fincher and that he had very little control over the script, I think this needs to be said: Alien 3 if VERY much in line with Fincher's other work because this guy is the absolute king of the Nihilism genre (without naming specific movies and possible spoilers).

I know you probably get this a lot with The Prestige. I would argue against that pick this way: With regard to your analysis earlier in the video about James Gunn’s “worst” film not being re-watchable even though you believe Guardians 2 is worse, I could say the same thing about Dunkirk or Tenet being less re-watchable than The Prestige for the common audience. Tenet has been documented as being his most frustrating film to watch, and Dunkirk doesn’t hold the entertainment value The Prestige has, even though it is more critically acclaimed. What are your thoughts? Love the concept and videos!!

Spielberg: Always - trying to prove he was a “grown up” director, he turned in a snooze fest. Gunn: Guardians 2 - it’s too generic for an auteur Fincher: Benjamin Button (I don’t count Alien 3 because he had no control) - Interesting premise, but just meanders. Also feels like he was really fishing for an Oscar nomination. Cameron: Avatar - a nice demo reel for a 3D TV, but Man Called Horse was better. Villenueve: Dune - Sorry, but he’s a great storyteller and too good to be stuck in franchise movies. I wouldn’t ask a 5-star chef to work at McDonalds. Reeves: Cloverfield - found footage wore out its welcome almost immediately after Blair Witch set off a glut of ripoffs. Scorsese: New York, New York - not as bad as Bogdanovich’s At Long Last Love, but it was nice to see the 40s romance revival of the late 70s go away. Tarantino: Hateful Eight - 70mm and 90% of the movie is confined to one room? WTF? Sam Raimi: For Love of the Game. I don’t know who this movie was for. Just seemed like Costner working out a midlife crisis for an hour and 45 minutes. Nolan: Oppenheimer - an hour too long, a completely unlikeable protagonist, an antagonist that was almost cartoonish in his motives, zero emotional depth, and Nolan cannot write women to save his life.

As far as Avatar is concerned, Roger Ebert said it best when he said that you can't re-invent the wheel with a super complex story. Cameron had to make it simple to reach as many people as possible. George Lucas did the same thing with Star Wars. Heck, the story to 2001 is almost non-existent.

You gave Piranha II a pass for Cameron indicating that it was only a Cameron film by his name being attached, but didn't give Fincher the same courtesy for Alien³. Sorry, I will defend Alien³ as much as you will bash it. 😆 You gave your reason for your Avatar selection being the cookie cutter story, when imo Alien³ has one of the most bizarre and creative stories of the franchise. I totally agree with Death Proof, even if I feel like you were being too kind in your thoughts, lol! Aside from some of the performances (Kurt in particular) I thought the movie was hot garbage. Prestige is an absolute masterpiece. Always thought it was and still one of the most underrated movies of all time. The first time I saw the movie, the twist took me away, it took my mind places. Phenomenal acting, direction, and Andy Serkis making an appearance always a beast!!

The amount of people that say Death Proof is bad or Tarantino’s worst film is really missing something lol. The movie rules especially the first half and that surprise where the plot changes focus half way through. Russel is scary and funny but he’s also sort of a geek but he pulls it off so well. It has better pacing than Django, more substance than Kill Bill 1. It’s like my 4th or 5th favorite Tarantino movie I’d watch it over once upon a time, Django, and the kill bills any day

Disagree about 1941. You mentioned Spielberg and the writing team of Back to the Future, but you also left out John Milius, who later did Red Dawn and Conan the Barbarian. The split personality of the film (Spielberg, Zemekis/Gale, Milius, and the SNL/SCTV-late-70s-comedy-landscape) didn't appeal to you, but it worked for me and for many cult fans. For myself, it remains a fixture every holiday season. Spielberg's worst movie by far is The Terminal.
