The important take-away from this video is to practice emergency braking on a regular basis so you become familiar with the point at which the tires are about to lock up. It's a waste of time to argue if the front tire provides 90%, or 75%, or 65% of the total braking because the coefficient of friction of the pads on the disc brake and the tire on the road is a constantly changing factor. What's important is to recognize the onset of an incipient skid and react quickly to prevent it. Only practice can help that.

Excellent pointers. I've saved my own bacon numerous times in my life over the years simply by being in the moment when I ride and always anticipating all the hazardous situations that could arise based upon my surroundings. Frt break is key because of Weight Transfer ....Physics .... You hit the Brake the Bike dives and the weight of the Bike is mostly on the Front wheel . ABS is not on All Bikes Make sure you know What Your Bike Has. Practice Practice Practice .......

With all due respect, its unbelievable how many riders are so mis-informed about braking. ABS will save your life, but Threshold Braking is always more efficient. If you don't understand that statement, please gain some professional training the life you save will be your own. Good Luck!

So far I've hit an antelope in Casper, 2 elk in Estes Park and a Moose in Kalispell. ABS worked great just not fast enough. State Farm has yet to raise my rates btw.

With my bike I can brake faster on dry pavement without ABS, but not on the wet. I like ABS on the wet. Remember straight line breaking only. The intermittent on / off effect of ABS can easily put you down in a corner. It's for straight line braking only.

"You cannot brake in a turn" Uh, yeah, you absolutely can. It's called trail braking. You add brakes, the bike wants to stand up, so you apply more counter steering input in with the bars and then boom: you're braking and turning at the same time.

Great video and good advice. He talks about maintaining that T-position and being upright. Obviously you don't want to brake while in a turn, but what's the recommendation for having to brake quickly while in a turn if you ever had to?!

I'm here because I just locked up the front wheel on my Suzuki Intruder M109R and went down (separated shoulder joint, couple of cracked ribs and around $3000 worth of damage including new helmet.) Was behind a truck n a 30mph zone in a queue of traffic, don't remember anything unusual in the last moment before it happened but must have instinctively gone for the front brake when the truck pulled up sharp (it seems a car had pulled out on him.) Wasn't that close to him; maybe over-calculated my stopping distance (bike weighs 800 lbs.) Don't recall having grabbed at it any more sharply than usual, but almost immediately after touching that lever I was on the floor. Dry conditions, surface seemed ok, maybe slight camber, but suddenly felt like I was on an ice rink. Don't even remember the bike plunging down on the forks at all, wheel locked up immediately upon first brake contact. Trying to figure out if I really did grab too hard, hope that was it because otherwise I have no idea what happened and therefore no way of preventing it happening again.

can't brake in a turn? I brake every day in a turn. In fact, in my MSF course, they have you brake in a turn as one of the exercises. I think he meant to say you can't lock the wheels up in a turn.
