Great show guys... I'm a canadian and never heard of half of these bands, so I have some exploration to do after this. I am french speaking, born in Quebec, so it's a bit funny seeing you all struggle :-) as a future reference: the "e" at the end of a word in frnech is silent :-) no "eh" there :-) Sloche is french slang for slush, so very much pronounced the same way as in english. Glad to see a lot of mentions of Quebec prog, as the province has always been a hotspot of prog in Canada... check out Morse Code as a few people commented before me. And if you like Harmonium, check out Fiori-Seguin who did only one album called "Deux-cent nuits à l'heure" (recently remastered)... if you find it sounds like Harmonium, it's because it's the singer and most of the Harmonium band teaming up with another singer back in 1978 and releasing this album in 1979. Very much in the Harmonium vein, perhaps less folky and an awesome album after "l'Heptade". Thanks again for the show guys!

Great show Pete & boys! It made me reminisce of all the great live music I heard back in the 70's in Toronto. I remember seeing bands like Max Webster and Triumph at a tavern called The Gasworks, but my most memorable time was at the Colonial Tavern (Toronto) in 1974 when a boyfriend took me there to hear an old schoolmate of his play with 2 other friends.........it was RUSH!

I was going to mention a few albums, but Pete already mentioned Maneige "Libre Service." That's a really nice record. Another band that I love, who were French but NOT from Quebec, was CANO, who were from Sudbury, Ontario. Their second album, "Au Nord Du Notre Vie" (In the North of Our Lives) is one of my favourite albums of all time. Very proggy and jazzy, with excellent lead vocals by Rachel Paiement, and beautiful electric violin and guitar playing, which was the signature of their sound. The band had a tragic history, with Rachel's brother committing suicide after that second album, and then their violin player dying of a brain aneurism later on. The band began singing in English more, and morphed into "Masque," but that didn't last very long. Rachel got married to Jim Vallance, Bryan Adams' writing partner. I'd like to mention a newer band from Hamilton, Ontario, called "Prismind." If you like Dream Theater, these guys will be right up your alley. Kind of a more melodic version of that sound. Fantastic musicians. They have lots of stuff up on KZfaq you can check out. Another mention would be southern Ontario band, The Hunt. Not really prog, but they had that element in their music, mainly due to keyboardist and flute player Jacques Harrison. The first album, with the hand on the cover, is the one you want to check out, and had Paul Kersey, Max Webster's first drummer, on the kit, and the fantastic lead vocals of Brian Gagnon, from Welland, Ontario.

@@JohnnyRecently Geddy's My Favorite Headache from 2000 is very good, some guy named Ben Mink plays guitar (K.D. Lang). I'd say if you like 80's-era Rush (which is my favorite Rush period) then you'd probably like this one. A little less proggy than some of those Rush records but still prog. "Home on the Strange" is probably my favorite track. A few of the songs are posted to YT if you want to check it out. I actually like Lifeson's Victor from 1996 less, it's also prog & (of course) the guitars are better which usually is enough to win me over, but I like Geddy's songwriting on Headache better. The full album in on YT. Les Claypool plays bass & most tracks are instrumentals. My fave track is probably "Mr. X", probably also the heaviest on either record

I'd see them when they came to do 'real' shows also. Check out the track, Brass Licks. Alain Caron is such a killer bass player. Thank you for this. As a Canadian, I know so little about Canadian prog, though I know there is much of it out there. I enjoyed this very much. I know Harmonium an October, Klaatu Saga and Mystery featuring David Benoit (of Yes for one great album) and such but you brought many new ones onto my radar. I always feel Canadians are considered second rate on the world stage, but we do have some inspired artists here. Thanks again for the shout out.

I don't really get how Klaatu is prog, especially since it was played on radio like every 5 minutes when that first record came out (at least here in the US) & that just about never happens with prog (except for Yes, and if you want to call Kansas prog). A great record though. They followed that up with lesser albums like Hope & Magentalane which I guess you could argue are more in the prog realm. A very interesting band

Bass solo artist/legend Michael Manring is a big time Zon bass user. His signature bass is a "Hyperbass": Four "detuner" equipped strings on a 3 octave fretless neck. Kind of a one-man bass solo fusion band!

He actually had a hand in developing that model (unlike some other players who have signature instrument models). The one he actually plays might be further customized though. Great show. GY!BE are one of my absolute faves, and are very hard to categorize. They aren't for everyone, though. Happy to see them get a mention. I won't lie - it's pretty enjoyable when someone on the panel brings up Magma; when this happens, I *know* I'll get a good laugh out of the deal. 😂😂😂

@@mvancha No doubt about it. They are heavily influenced by Styx. While Styx enjoyed multiplatinum success, Zon flew completely under the radar. Another victim of major label neglect here in the US. There are several examples of this happening to signed bands. Get signed and get forgotten. I'm glad when anyone acknowledges the underdog. Thanks.

Awesome stuff guys! Love how Sean picked modern post rock and bands like godspeed that are though amazing they are sort of frowned upon in several circles really cool! Quite a few bands to check out. I was always more familiar with the Canadian metal bands especially the Quebec extreme metal scene but would love to check out some of these. Top 5 Voivod-angel rat (Love this band so much although I was never a fan of the thrash stuff. From nothingface to the outer limits is where I go back to. Angel rat is not even a metal album it sounds a bit like the best blue Oyster cult album they never made but ofcourse with a touch of voivod) Gorguts-obscura (one of my favorite extreme metal albums of all time period. This takes several listens to get into since on the first it's very strange and avantgarde. Nobody sounded like them and though bands try lately they still don't exactly sound like the kings) Beyond creation-the algorythm (extremely unique band. They are a bit like opeth but they also mix it with the technical death metal stuff. The bass is almost a lead instrument. If you guys think gojira is the best band in terms of using tapping parts as riffs you should listen to these guys. This is definitely their most jazz influenced and introspective album doesn't have as much technical death metal as the previous stuff) Chthe'leist-la dernier crepuscule (another extreme metal band from Quebec. The drummer from beyond creation plays for them now. They are also a very difficult band to get into initially because of the vocals but once they grow on you, the feeling is just elation. They just have this one album and it sounds quite a lot like the Finnish cult death metal demilich. However I love these guys a lot more since they are more jazz influenced, the stuff is tighter, better produced and has some excellent solos. One of my favorite albums from the last decade) Quo vadis-day into night (arguably my favorite band from the tech death/prog death genre. These guys are extremely melodic and very classic sounding. This album has a lot of Megadeth and carcass influences as well. Its just complex riffing with a lot of dynamics and very cool melodic lines)

FM's Direct-to-Disc from 1978 is a wonderful album, it's by far their most spacy and least commercial album. This album was recorded in one take, as is all the albums in the Direct-to-Disc series. This is the album Ben Mink came in to replace Nash the Slash. Surveillance from 1979 is also very good but with City of Fear they went for a more commercial approach. It's their 1985 album Con-Test and 1987's Tonight that are supposedly dreadful and to be avoided. I don't own those due to that reputation.

Thanks you guys! I’m a big Saga fan - I agree with Pete that their first several records are quite good. I’ve got to listen to Devin Townsend - no relation to Pete apparently as I noticed the H is missing! I’m going to try and find a copy of Night Winds - wish me luck! Never heard of FM Black Noise but will check it out as well as the Spaced Out. This is a fantastic show, so many Canadian prog nuggets - great idea to subtract Rush as it’s everyone’s obvious choice and we already talk about them plenty, not that they don’t deserve it, my #1 Canadian prog/rock just like everybody else!

One of the kind of surprising things about Harmonium is that their classic live album was recorded in 1977 in Vancouver, when the Quebec secession movement was quite strong, and the crowd seemed to not be by bothered it. I think they are the greatest Canadian prog band other than Rush, despite their limited catalogue, and I love their first album, too, which many don’t consider to be prog at all but I see it as fitting squarely in the prog folk movement. In fact, I probably listen to it the most among all their studio albums.

Tea Party - Edges of Twilight is a masterpiece that I would think Pete would love. Also, it is one of Martin Popoff’s favourite albums of all time. Pete, you should give it a listen. Yea SAGA is great. Always good for what they put out. It's real sad that american radio only covered On The Loose and Wind Me Up off Worlds Apart and forgot to go any deeper into their music and catalogue. Maybe college radio played some more but I never heard it. So in the periods these days I find and love more of their music. A nice single album live called In Transit is good with 9 songs. 2 being On The Loose and Wind Me Up. And as Pete said of just 100 people at a SAGA show , well yea look how many missed out on a show that was good who were there. And anyone that got into Genesis and such that didn't know of them, get into more then you have. Discover these bands they speak of they are good. I discover stuff I missed coming up and well it's always good to broaden one's musical horizons. I see that the chat board is well aware of a lot of good Canada prog.

Thnaks guys, loads more to discover. I have the first 2 Zon albums, both excellent - they were championed by Geoff Barton in Sounds magazine back in the late 70's though I cuoldnt get hold of any of their albums until Escape released the 2 on 1 of their first two back in 2003, I laos managed to find a copy of their live album thathas a cover of Hocus POcus. Sadly guitarist Brian Miller passed in 2015, and according t Discogs Howard Hekm, their keyboardist, worked with thelikes of Iced Earth, Kamelot, Demons and Wizards, Jon Oliva. Saga were another band championed by Geoff Barton - theywere reported as being huge in PUerto Rico in the late 70's. I was able to get to see them in Bournemouth for the princely sum of £1 (approx 1.4 $) in Feb 81 having previously bought Images at Twilight and Silent Knight. Been a fan ever since, got to see them again in March 2003, still great. Symphonic Slam were of course the band/project form which Ritchie Blackmore plucked David Stone to play keys with Rainbow. Managed to get hold of some Harmonium after Pete recommended them in the show he did on Mellotron Albums last year. Glad Sean mentioned Mystery. Have that FM live at earfest with the DVD- very nice.
