"Baby I Love Your Way/Freebird," by Will to Power is truly nauseating, especially the "Freebird" part. I could never before imagine a Lynyrd Skynyrd anthem getting turned into a limp noodle, but whoomp, there it is. Also, not bothered at all by R.E.M.'s "Toys in the Attic," but Axl Rose's singing of Mccartney's lines on "Live and Let Die" is cringeworthy.

Disturbed’s version of “Sounds Of Silence” is number one for me. The “Toys In The Attic” cover by R.E.M. is great, actually, the b-sides and rarities album that song is on is cool, there is an excellent cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Pale Blue Eyes”. Dead Letter Office is the album. Didn’t know Pete didn’t like R.EM., I guess there isn’t enough Hammond organ in their music. 😂

I actually don’t mind Megadeth‘s covers of These Boots (and I Ain’t Superstitious, for that matter). At least they are quite far from the originals, which is always good. Can’t say the same about Anarchy In The UK though. That one sounds too much like the Pistols version, just not nearly as good. By the way, Belle & Sebastian did a good cover of The Boys Are Back In Town. Haven’t heard the Happy Mondays version yet.

5 worst examples I can think of: - Nelly Furtado covering Rush's "Time Stand Still" (I actually thought she was one of the better pop stars of the 2000s, but that cover was trash) - Arch Enemy covering Iron Maiden's "Aces High" - Art of Noise featuring Tom Jones covering Prince's "Kiss" - Motley Crue covering Madonna's "Like A Virgin" - And this last example was done live, but when Dream Theater (well, specifically James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess) covered Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" a couple years ago in tribute to Chris Cornell; god, that was so bad and LaBrie sounded horrendous

Material for the next episode: 5) Machine Head - Message in a Bottle (It's one thing to go through an ill-conceived nu-metal phase. it's another thing to take The Police along with you) 4) Guns n Roses - Hair of the Dog (always sounded like an uninspired cash grab for Axl. Britny Foxx's cover that came out in the same time period tops it, easily. Of course the original is untouchable) 3) Will To Power - Baby I Love Your Way/Free Bird (ahead of its time because this was a mash-up of covers long before those were popular. And I can tolerate some 80's sap, sure, but doing that to Free Bird was just going too far) 2) Poison - Your Mama Don't Dance (Poison's brand of pop metal may have its detractors, but it had it's own place. But this was a quirky cover choice that got annoying real quick and ruined the flow of the whole Open Up and Say Aah! record. Always skipped it on CD.) 1) Toad the Wet Sprocket - Rock and Roll All Night (Let's take a 90's alt band and have them do a half-baked slow country-rock rendition of a KISS sing-along classic. Who thought this was a good idea?)

So early this morning I got George Michael - Careless Whisper stuck in my head. Well since I'd never properly listened to the song I only knew the Saxophone which kept repeating in my head. Came home and listened to Carless Whisper for about 2 hours straight. Now I am well aware that "Guilty feet have got no rhythm".

Bob Dylan - Knockin‘ on Heaven’s Door ****1/2 Guns N‘ Roses - Knockin‘ on Heaven’s Door *1/2 Bob Dylan‘s vocal performance on Blonde on Blonde is fantastic, by the way. When people say all Dylan covers are better than the originals they usually name All Along the Watchtower and Mr Tambourine Man as examples. It’s true for those two, but there are other Dylan covers that aren’t nearly as good as the originals, e.g. The Byrds - The Times They Are A-Changin, Adele - To Make You Feel My Love, The Rolling Stones - Like a Rolling Stone.
