Probably rather overlooked, but still gave the songs and albums more energy: Barriemore Barlow (drummer in Jethro Tull from This As A Brick up to Stormwatch). Great dynamic drumming! By the way: Awesome channel, Pete. Really enjoy watching your videos! Cheers from a German 'KZfaq colleague'! :)

Billy Cobham is my #1 - consistently defies what should be possible for a human being. As a big fusion fan, I have to make a case for Pierre Moerlen, whose work on the Gong albums of the late ‘70s is magnificent. And if the role of a drummer is to achieve symbiosis with the bass in the rhythm section, Alan White must be mentioned: his playing (as one with Chris Squire) on Relayer (Yes’ contribution to fusion) is his very best work - only one of the jazz fusion greats, or perhaps one of the batch of supremely gifted younger technical magicians, could have rivaled Alan on Gates of Delirium and Soundchaser.

Cozy all the way! No one cooler ever sat down at or even got near a drum kit. A few years ago on the anniversary of Powell's death, I had a couple glasses of wine and e-mailed one of the top classic rock DJ's in New York and asked for a tribute block to be played. Suggested Stargazer, Kill The King, Gates of Babylon, Lost In Hollywood, Slow an' Easy, etc. He e-mailed me back saying that none of his listeners ever heard of Cozy Powell or any of the songs I mentioned. I responded with, "that's because you never play them!!" Anyway, radio is a lost cause, so thank GOD for people like Pete to discuss music too good for the masses and keep alive the legacy of legends like Cozy Powell. Thanks Pete, great channel and video!

I really enjoyed your take on these drummers. Very insightful on Bonham - I tend to dissect the music and analyze what each band member is playing and then how it all comes together as a unit. Another thing I always loved about Bonham (though my personal favorite has to be Neil P), Bonham had an incredible sense of knowing where NOT to play. He drops in and out of Zep tunes all the time and at all the right places. It’s amazing that not playing showcases the stuff that he does play and “serves the music” at the group level. Thanks for the excellent videos!

Two drummers who don't often get a mention. 1. Michael Shrieve (ex. Santana) - driving power both at Woodstock and on the band's first seven albums 2.Paul Hammond (Atomic Rooster) - severely underrated drummer. He underpinned arguably the best work by Atomic Rooster (e.g. 'Death Walks Behind You' & 'In Hearing Of' albums)

I was totally psyched back then when I heard those Cozy Powell rumors......there were also rumors of a combination of Zeppelin and YES members....YYZ.....there was no greater let down in rock and roll history than Led Zeppelin not only not continuing....but the unbelievable talent of Page and Plant completely disappearing overnight....the spell had been broken....it became painfully obvious of how it was over forever after we were subjected to absolutely hideous solo Plant...where he apparently had no voice....and the super lame and pathetic Firm....where apparently Page forgot how to play guitar....nothing they ever did even came close....Live Aid....No Quarter....further reminders....

One Cozy Powell album that rarely is mentioned are "Emerson Lake And Powell" from 1986. It doesn't really sound like classic Emerson, Lake and Palmer and is very 80's but also very catchy and powerful. I don't own the album but wouldn't hesitate a second to buy it if I did find it!

I love this list! I agree with all your choices. There are a couple of newer names you've mentioned that I haven't heard yet, but I can't wait to check them out. I'm so glad you have Cozy on the list, he's sadly overlooked, I think he and Aynslet Dunbar are two important drummers in rock history that people don't realize did so much for the groups they were with. Myself, I would also have Ringo, Charlie Watts, Jim Keltner and Levon Helm. They may not be very flashy or technical, but the thing these four guys have in common is that they have an understated quality to their playing yet what they do perfectly fits every song and to me, in my mind, that's as much of a talent as being a technical virtuoso; sometimes what you need is somebody who has a perfect sense of timing who can reliably come up with a rhythm that suits the song and it's a blessing to do that. Also, I really appreciated your nods to a couple of erstwhile King Crimson drummers. If I may, I'd like to suggest checking out Michael Giles, the original drummer from King Crimson: besides Crim, 21st Century Schizoid Band, McDonald & Giles and a couple of solo records he hasn't done very much else, tends to stay low on the radar and just come out and play whenever it's suitable on his terms. But this guy has quite a groove, his technical chops are beyond compare and his drumming, especially on In the Court of the Crimson King, McD&G and The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp, his drumming is absolutely precise
