San Diego’s Seaport Village opened in 1980 with a celebration featuring entertainment and fanfare. Promoters called it the first big tourist attraction to come to the city in 10 years boasting 50 shops at the time. Architects designed the area to look like an early California port. Thousands of people turned out for the opening of the $14-million project which the city hoped would draw locals and visitors downtown. www.cbs8.com/article/news/loc...

Sad that it has now become dated and a shadow of its former self. 4 years ago many of the original specialty shops (which I patronized when I visited SD annually) lost their leases, so now only the very touristy shops remain. It is still a beautifully landscaped area to walk through. I hope the new redevelopment plans provide for some landscaping & green spaces for visitors and residents to enjoy. The plans released in March 2022 had hotels, restaurants & retail, plus a beach area. I don't think new retail is needed given the demise of Horton Plaza. Also the modern Headquarters at the Seaport is nearby. One new hotel, restaurants and green spaces (yes to the beach) would be an improvement.

I am sad to see seaport village soon to be demolished and replaced with a wannabe Dubai. Seaport village is so charming with their cute little shops meant to invoke a leisurely, slower paced era. It is HUMAN scale. what will replace it is going to be yet another glitzy, modern lifeless carbon copy of every other new development out there. Nothing unique. Seaport village could have easily been updated in many ways yet still retain its original character. They could’ve given it fresh landscaping such as coastal stage scrub and beach grasses. The buildings could’ve easily been renovated and freshened up. The bumpy walkways could have been replaced with modern, permeable pavers or decomposed granite. But of course every city is competing with the world now and everybody has to have the biggest baddest projects to show off. We can never keep anything we love. It’s just so upsetting.
