Happy Tackle Tip Thursday!
Penn Fishing Tackle's pro-staffer, Steve Carson, focuses on a successful method when targeting bluefin tuna, especially those at a particular depth. He has three ways to rig up a sinker outfit and outlines the ways to employ each.

When using the drop shot rig do you still hook the sardine through the cartilage of the nose? The way the hook is oriented it would seem the bait would be 90 degrees off the way it should be presented...

Instead of the usual "crosswise", instead hook the sardine "vertically". With a good lively bait, it would work just fine either way.

@@tunanorth When you hook the sardine vertically, are you capturing the "lower chin" in the hook?

I’ve been experimenting with just the nose hooking and hooking from the bottom chin to shutting their mouth. Both works but if you are fast dropping I’d hook through chin and shut sardines mouth.

Steve, Do you ever paint the sinkers black? I have heard that BFT sometimes eat the sinker.

I don't paint the sinkers, but yes, bluefin do occasionally bite them. The popular lure called "Eddie Bomb" is just a sinker with hooks on it!

@@MetalDEmpire The "Eddie Bomb" is not especially new; its been around for several years, and pier anglers have been using a smller version for several decades. Just be sure you are using a sinker with "wire through" construction. The majority of sinkers just have an eye that a tuna can easily pull right out of the lead.

What knot is good for bluefin to connect leaders. Braid to floro/ floro to Mano. Would uni to uni be good

Favored knot for braid to fluoro is the RP Knot. Favored knot for mono to fluoro is the 4-turn Surgeon's Knot.

I still use uni to uni for connection. Have got 80lbers on 30# fluoro

Can't they feel the weight and spit it out? On the drop shot. Do you level it in free spool ? Or lock it , at the right depths? Thank you Grate fishing from Utah

The rig is usually fished with the reel in freespool. The fish are feeding aggressively, the sinker does not bother them.
