Clear Cree is def worth checking out. There’s a ton of trails you can explore once you’re in the gated area. I’d love to go back and check out some of the mines in foot.

As a San Benito native, it's surreal to see aerial drone footage of Idria. I'd always wanted to visit, despite the urban legends alleging that its few remaining residents were mercury-poisoned, "The Hills Have Eyes" types who'd shoot at you if you came too close to their property. (Although what _really_ kept me away was learning that there had been traces of hantavirus found in some of the run-down buildings.) As a kid I had always thought people were pulling my leg when they said the water there was orange, but it's a very real result of acidic mine runoff.

Be aware this whole area is hazardous. Asbestos was mined and so the area is usually closed in the warm months in an effort to keep the dust down. Idria is a superfund site for high mercury toxic levels. The mercury is in the water, ground, and air.

@OverlandTrailGuides

The only area where you might run into issues is the loop theat goes into clear creek-- but you can skip that. But if you drive straight through Clear Creek from the west gate to the east gate, a high clearance 2wd vehicle like a tacoma should be fine. AWD vehicles should be fine as well.

How many gate codes did you need, overall? I applied for the permit and received one gate code, but in your description you mention "gate codes", plural. Also, what's your take on the relative danger of entering the area? Seems like you're not too worried about it. I've been researching online and many OHV groups are emphatic that the risk stated by the EPA and BLM are overblown. I'm just not sure whether it's worth risking it with my 2 year old son, though.

Hey thank you guys for all the replies! Just to follow up, for anyone else, looking to visit the old ghost town via Clear Creek I guess that gate is chain locked right now and they're not letting anyone back there because of damage to the road due to the storms. But a couple of the locals in the area did tell me that it's accessible through the other side of the valley. Hopefully I'll check it out sometime later this month. Thank you guys!!

The BLM has grossly exaggerated the public risk at Clear Creek Management Area (CCMA). There was a protest in 2008 when they did this. Now, they have gated, locked and charge for permits to travel Clear Creek Rd, which is a county road, not a federal road. So that is literally highway robbery. One can only guess as to why the testing results they used to justify closing Clear Creek were altered to remove "zero to no risk" so they could close it. Budget issues maybe? In any case, it was extremely unethical and probably illegal. But as is usual with government misbehavior, it takes funds and years of legal challenges, so the wrongs persist. There is more serpentine in the air in downtown San Jose, than in Clear Creek. Serpentine is so everpresent in California, it's the state rock (or used to be at least). Dirt bikers and OHV fans recreated in the area for 40+ years. There are no known cases of mesotheloma or lung cancer caused by the asbestos to off road recreation in CCMA. But for some reason, after decades, it was deemed a HUGE, MASSIVE risk. Tests were performed not in typical conditions, but highly elevated conditions designed to inflate the results (like following a bull dozer). The serpentine found there was short fiber, not the more dangerous long fiber. So that reduced the concern even further. But comments along those lines that were in the draft report mysterious are not present in the final report.

Totally hear you in regards to large swaths of OHVs shut out from Clear Creek. However, the permits are very cheap for folks who want to visit the Serpentine area (best place to explore!) with street legal vehicles. $5 for vehicle access, and then an additional free permit to gain access to the ACEC Serpentine Area.

@@OverlandTrailGuides For parts off the county road, they can charge whatever they want, although the aforementioned issues re/the closure apply. But they have no right to gate and charge for access to the county road which leads from the mine up and over the ridge and through Clear Creek to Coalinga Rd. AFAIK, the county has not handed over that road to the BLM, but unfortunately, lacks the backbone to fight for it. It is a remote area. It's not like it's a key access road to a town. Money is scarce. Nice videos btw. Don't let my frustration with bureacratic bs give the impression I didn't like your video - on the contrary!
