Great video. I just bought a snowflake. For me it is the special watch to have right now. I agree a 100% with the lugs of the old speedmaster version. This is exactly why I bought a speedmaster reduced instead last year 👍

I agree with you on the weight aspect of the GS. It just doesn’t have that luxury weight to it. Another option can be the “SkyFlake” steel case and you can add a steel bracelet.

I got the Speedy, which I defnitely love. The Snowflake is also on my Radar. For a good price I will add it to my collection.

I have them both and I prefer the GS. I love the dial and finishing on the GS more. I love the history of the speedy and I can appreciate the weight issue making it feel more substantial. However, I’m also a race car guy and I know that Titanium is so much cooler than steel (though I sort of prefer the color of steel on a watch case or bracelet) so my brain digs the lightness of the Snowflake. I also like it better on a hot day. Also, the Spring Drive tech is so cool. My Speedy is about +3-4 seconds a day… and that’s fine by me. I don’t really need a watch to tell time. The mechanical coolness of the Speedy is also pretty rad. But I will admit that the smooth sweep of second hand on the Snowflake is very satisfying and the fact that it keeps time like a quartz watch is super cool. Mine runs at +0.2 (or a bit better!) per day. I dig that! Anyway, either one is great. You literally can’t go wrong. Have fun with whichever you choose.

I find the stopwatch features of the Speedy make the look and wearing busy and since I rarely use a stop watch I would rather like I do own the Snowflake. I got the Golden Snowflake with gold hands. I have a Rolex GMT master II so my next watch should be maybe a diver spring drive. Seiko just came out with one with 120 hour reserve but it was a limited edition. It was also much thinner which I like

I was down to the same two and went Speedy with it. A bit more versatile in my mind, which is what I was looking for. The snowflake doesn’t look quite right in a very casual setting but the Speedy can be worn with sport shorts and a tee shirt and look just as good as it does in the board room!

I'm going through the same dilemma. Your commenters are very knowledgeable. I'm looking at the red dial for both watches. With your video and their input, I think I'm going with the Omega Speedmaster... or perhaps the Grand Seiko. Whichever the wife prefers.

Snowflake - Cleaner, Brighter, Single crown and the swords are to die for!

I have an Omega and a Grand Seiko, both are fine watches. I have an Omega Seamaster Diver300m as my daily wear and a GS Blue snowflake as my special occasion watch. I love both of them for different reasons. The Seamaster is built like a tank, shock resistant, insanely anti magnetic, obviously very waterproof and the case just shrugs of anything that could blemish it. I don’t baby it in any way but there’s not a mark on it, it’s probably the ultimate 1 watch collection watch, it looks equally good at the bottom of the sea on a divers wrist as it does under the cuff of a tux at a black tie event. The Blue snowflake is just a thing of beauty, highly polished case and hand set, exquisite blue snowflake dial and the spring drive movement with its mesmerising smooth sweeping second hand. I will admit to babying it quite a bit, I’m still in the honeymoon period and I don’t wear it when theres even a slight chance of marking that Zaratsu polishing. I’ve never been so aware of door handles when walking though doors in my life.

I sold my Speedmaster Pro and I regret it on a weekly basis. Even though spending a ton of money for a watch I’ve already owned isn’t very exciting it’s nevertheless what I’m saving up for at the moment.

I would change snowflake. The only thing I do not like, in otherwise clean outlook, are those polished middle links in the bracelet - too blingy/flashy effect.

Everybody fixates on the Snowflake when they look at GS. There are many other intricate dial GS that probably out do the snowflake but don’t get the hype, unfortunately GS has Omegas disease of limited editions🙄🙄 so these dials sell out quickly. The snowflake gets the hype partly because you can at least buy one.

I have a Sinn U1 fully tegemented, it weighs right about one half pound and I don’t notice it on the wrist. I don’t see how people don’t like the weight of a titanium watch as you won’t feel it while wearing it either. Weird.

I am a big fan of Grand Seiko (and Seiko for that matter and I have purchased several), and you can’t go wrong in my opinion. However, between these two, get the Moon watch. That is absolutely beautiful and built to such a high standard. There are few watches that come even close for the money, end of commentary.

Have you seen the SBGE249 GMT limited edition? aka the Silver Blizzard. It's in stainless steel & bulkier measuring 41 x 14 but a great sporty alternative to the Snowflake & wears very well. Just ordered a 3861 Haselite. There are so many people with smaller wrists that can now wear a Speedy...and I'm one of them!

How does the Speedmaster compare to the GS? I doubt I can go for a watch that wears bigger than the snowflake that I own. It's just within the limit. Anyone tried them both? Does the speedmaster feel bigger or smaller than the GS? Would love to buy one but need to travel a while to be able to test it.

I have the new speedmaster racing in black dial and orange accents. I take it everywhere and do everything with it. mountain biking, gym. ok so I dont swim with it but it hasn't missed a second in over 6 months. can definitely attest to its ruggedness. actually my friend if you wanna buy mine for a good price let me know. only reason I would want to sell is to buy the seamaster chronograph. same movement but I can swim with it.. let me know cheers.

My friend has the Omega. It really does feel like 100%. I cannot understand the price, though, for s timepiece that needs winding every 55 hours or so. Look what year it is. Are you going to fly to the Moon with it?

Love them both but if I had to choose I would go with the snowflake.

Have both watches (1861 speedy) Both great pieces, if you’re concern about titanium, I think it’s a better material and will forever immune to corrosion. The moonwatch is classic, the Springdrive Snowflake is horological masterpiece, if you can get both they are very fine duo.

This is an easy decision, of course, the Moon-watch! Since you are comparing with the Spring Drive, however, if the Speedmaster is against the Caliber 9SA5 Hi-Beat 36000, Hmmm... this will be a really difficult decision, I will probably go for both ;-)

Are you at Feldmar? I miss Feldmar (I left LA 8 years ago, and only get back about once a year). I always passed on the Speedy because I knew that Omega will be making them until the day they shut the place down. On the flip side, when I saw the Snowflake, my concern, same as you, was that they would stop making them "tomorrow" and I'd be SOL. So I got the Snowflake. In 2012. That watch isn't going ANYWHERE. I'd say that if you were only going to get one right now, get the Snowflake. Even though it's probably the most common Grand Seiko, it's still a very rare piece. Omega probably makes more sapphire sandwiches in a year than GS makes ALL watches. Oh, and if/when you get the Speedy, get the hesalite version!

Interesting that I had to make the very same decision myself too during my own “grail watch tournament” :) Let me make it easy for you. You can have only one watch today and the world will end tomorrow, which one is it going to be? It was pretty obvious that it had to be the Speedy for me. Actually, the final round between the hesalite and sapphire versions was whole lot more torturing. Besides, the Snowflake is more of a dress watch whereas the Speedy can be more versatile in plenty other occasions, especially with numerous strap options.

The weight of the snowflake is supposed to be light to illustrate how light an actual snowflake is.

I have 2 Rolexes, but my daily driver is the Snowflake. They are both great watches. You will probably be able to wait on the Speedy and get a good deal.

I went with the snowflake because GS is soaring upmarket in pricing. Never know if and when the snowflake's price will change or if GS will replace it with a more expensive version. Speedy is on my radar for sure but I know a few years down the line, I could get a better deal on it

Love Grand Seiko for their finish but their bracelets are rubbish IMHO. I went with the previous version of the Speedmaster in Hesalite with the leather strap and deployment buckle. Can't go wrong with a classic.

I don't understand why the weight is a problem. Why would light be a bad thing? Quite the opposite or not?

This is a no brainer for me, it would be the speedmaster. Any titanium watch for me is a no go.

IMO as someone with both (previous speedy, though): Not only does the snowflake need to be seen in person, it needs to be worn for an extended period of time. I bought mine a little over a year ago, and I feel that my enjoyment still hasn't peaked. What you consider cheap and flimsy about the titanium today, is just going to feel super comfortable after about a week of wear. It's a double-edged sword for a collector, though, as it makes steel and gold bracelet watches feel comparatively sharp and uncomfortable. It has already caused me to sell my OP39, and my speedy is almost pushed out of my rotation.

Just as an outsider looking in, I feel that everyone and their mom has a Speedmaster. Same can’t be said for Grand Seiko. And as far as I know, only real watch enthusiasts are willing to splurge on a Grand Seiko. I’ve always wanted a Speedmaster and I will buy one someday but I’m not missing out on the birch. Speedmaster will always be there. I’m saving my pennies as we speak.

Comparison between an ICON vs an ordinary watch in horology doesn't make sense my friend! Although i adore and love Japanese craftsmanship and reliablity, we're talking about Omega Speedmaster here... Come on guys!

Omega’s frequency and subsecond marker MISMATCH is FRAUD. They use 6 and 8 Vibr/Second movements combined with 1/5th sec markers on the dial. The chronograph hand misses all sub-second markers on all of these speedmasters, cannot be stoppoed on any of these markers, for almost 60 years, and no one talks about it. DESIGN FRAUD for profit - well done.
