I've returned to this location with one purpose, to search for the Unseen!
Welcome back to the Incredibly Unique Forest Hill Cemetery. I've filmed a few videos here in the past, but this time I'm focusing on the areas and things I haven't seen before. There's some off beaten paths, trails and areas of this cemetery that most people don't see and I want to find out what can possibly be out there waiting to be discovered. One thing I can say is that there's more here than just cemetery related items. Also joining me is ‪@RevengeOfTheApocalypse‬ who did a more traditional video of this cemetery.

Can't do that anymore, I don't have a vehicle 😞

As a kid, yes! It was always amazing what I would find. But now it's harder. I would explore more but am afraid of running into bears in the spring/summer/fall, and during the winter, the snow is just too deep for my short little legs lol! That's why I live vicariously through you, JP 🙂

Hi Jay, I found out why the chain link was on that stone: "The three-link chain is the main symbol of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and its presence on a cemetery tombstone, gravemarker or monument indicates that the deceased belonged to this fraternal organization. The three links represent friendship, love and truth." The woman's husband may have belonged to that organization.

@18:38: Looks like a zinc headstone. Back in the day, they were a less expensive substitute for a marble or granite headstone. They were actually quite common. They were precast, and the inserts (the anchor & rope; the cross & crown; etc...) were simply screwed on to meet the family's desire.

For some odd reason, I enjoy walking through old cemeteries. Those markers with just numbers on them could be from a mental hospital? When someone in a mental hospital died, they would bury them that way, with just a number, because no family member could be contacted (for whatever reason) or no one could/would claim the bodies for burial. Sad but happens. Love your videos and look forward to more. Thanks for sharing :)
@Chaotic-Demise77

Yes, mental hospitals' & prisons' only used numbers' to ID the body(s). However, they're usually buried on the premises, not in a common cemetery. I could be wrong.

Regarding the Jackson memorial at 17:31 in the video. That is a metal tombstone of the kind popular in the late 1800s and early 1900's . The symbols on it are Masonic. The crown and cross is from the Knights Templars and the anchor is from Scottish Rite.
@kaitlynobrien516

It seems that many of the present headstones have been catalogued on find a grave, I recommend anyone who visits places like this to use the site either to find info or even add to it like photos or GPS coordinates. The numbered markers tend to indicate plots with burials in which a headstone could not be afforded but can also mark plots that were for future use. Its possible to go in those areas and find the exact locations of the burials with ground penetrating radar (GPR) for any abnormalities and the original marker places could be estimated from this as well.

Awesome and yes absolutely enjoy taking the off beaten paths! I know I have said this before, but I really like the construction of the culverts, I think it's fascinating to think that so much talent and work was put into making them. I am really not sure why all those headstones or markers were just discarded like that, would be interesting to find out why. Hi Jay, I wonder if the numbers on those old stones is for the people who died in an asylum, they were given a number because the family wanted their loved one's name to be hidden, mainly because the families didn't want shame brought onto the family name. The crown with a cross through it can signify the rewards that await faithful believers in Heaven. The sphere you saw at 21:38 can mean a soul waiting for the resurrection. The 3 linked chain represents the Independent order of Oddfellows, they stand for Friendship, Love & Truth. My favourite one was the graves of the 2 Brothers with the airbrushed marker, that was so expertly made and so unique. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💞

Great video! If you're ever in the DC area you may want to visit Cedar Hill Cemetery on the border between SE Washington DC and Suitland Maryland. The 150-acre site contains a number of unique faux wood concrete sculptures by Mexican artist Dionicio Rodriguez (1891 - 1955) including benches, bridges, a hollow tree, and an “Annie Laurie Wishing Chair.” Despite being the final resting place of many historical figures there are rarely many visitors.

Don’t know the significance of the Sphere, but I can tell You a Ghost Story associated with one, there is a Cemetery about 15 minutes away in Ashland Ohio, the Ashland Cemetery which has a monument with a sphere on top that rotates so many inches a Year they have measuring strings crisscrossing it where they measure each rotation, I have seen this Sphere and was able to see the mark where it had originally sat against the monument and had rotated up.

I could spend days here. Beautiful and interesting cemetery. Not sure what to think about all of those headstones laying on that hill. They could be graves but I think you would see some sign of caskets. Could they be from other cemeteries in the area that were moved? Maybe when the people were dug and moved to here or other places a new headstone was made and the old one discarded. Best thing would be to talk to someone associated with the cemetery. Same with the numbered graves. The anchor usually means a sailor. The crown and cross means the reward in heaven (crown) after the trials and tribulations of living on earth (cross).

Well one thing is for sure Jay if you find a toy its definitely abandoned lol. You did spot a toy pick up truck Jay. The chapel is so beautiful and I bet its interesting down stairs in the catacombs. The grave stone at 20:53 of the shell and the child laying on its side is kinda like my tattoo I have on my right arm which commemorates our daughter who passed away at 17 weeks old. My tattoo depicts a small infant laying on her side wrapped in angel wings holding Scarlett Rose as that is what we named her, Scarlett Rose. It just reminded me of it is all. We lost her even though my antenatal visits were previously fine and on 9/11/09 the doctor told me she had passed away. Sorry I didn't mean to put a dampener on your video Jay it just stuck out to me. I love your videos when you are out exploring and I find them fascinating. Wonderful video! I have a few ancestors buried there. I haven't seen your other videos on Forest Hill (though I plan to watch them!), so perhaps you already know of this grave. Have you ever seen the grave of Barbara? She was a nun at the university that borders the cemetery. As you may know there is a cemetery on that university's campus where nuns are buried but Barbara was considered a 'sinner' and therefore she was not buried there. Her grave is in between the campus and Forest Hill, down a pretty steep incline. If accessing it from the university there is a set of stairs leading to it, but you can get to it from the cemetery as well.

Great explore Jay. Imagine what can be seen or discovered if some of the overgrowth were to be cleared away. I use to explore Mount Hope Cemetery and it's amazing how the gravestones style changed over years and the workmanship of the various structures. Some notable gravestones too, Susan B Anthony, Fredrick Douglas and others. Also, the dates of deaths on so many during the previous flu/influenza pandemics. So much history and demographics and beauty can be found in cemeteries. I find it interesting and peaceful at these places. People think that's weird,lol. 👍🤙

Jay, did you see the little hole in the ground (about 8-inch diameter) in the numbered section in the old corner at 18:49, far right on the screen? Maybe an animal den? Fascinating walk through with some beautiful old architecture on some of the old mausoleums and arches and stonework on some of the culverts. I liked the small obelisk with the little blue truck in front of it, and the royal navy headstone with the detailed anchor & crown was really interesting. The vandalism at one of the mausoleums was really sad, but the overall video was very well done. I really appreciate how respectful you are, combined with a great sense of curiosity that keeps everything going at a nice pace. Thanks for bringing us along!

That dead tree with the "growths" is calle burl and I will now be surprised if it is still standing since your video. If is worth $$$$ for the wood working society.

Maybe what looks like tossed grave markers at the large culvert was the result of flooding that took shallow markers along with the water. Great job on another interesting video!

Sad video, really. Too bad that their graves have been forgotten and neglected like that. The numbered gravestones are probably a potter’s field of some sort.

Maybe the markers with just numbers are people who died in the war and not knowing who they were, were just buried with a number instead of a name. It could be some of them are poor people who didn't have any family to bury them. I am just guessing, but this was a great video.

@6:34 From African American portion of the cemetery perhaps? I know of at least one cemetery where that the very same thing occurred back in the 1950s. Hope I’m wrong.

Those numbered markers are likely paupers graves, ie people that didn't have a next of kin to claim the bodies or whose family was too poor to give them a proper gravesite.

They are plot numbers. Probably no one hurried there just empty available plots at one time.

Surprised by the large number of rhododendrons in this area must have been planted by the builders of the cemetery. They are clearly older ones based just on how big they have gotten, do you know how old the place is?

Was there a mental hospital near there? Sometimes the mental hospitals would bury their dead with just a number, if they had no family.
