Sea-Money Fishing

Күн бұрын

Had this spot in mind for awhile and finally went and checked it out on one of those warm March days... Navionics said everything in this cove was shallow but I figured there was a chance the Navionics was wrong.. nope. Shallow, dirty... dead... did beat the skunk, found one small patch of fish and caught a few before getting blown away from the fish and decided Id just leave and hope to find more. The day ended with a low tide struggle and finding a dead dolphin. Currently 36 degrees and raining in RI, may god have mercy on our souls

There are actually some fish that spawn in Canadian waters in late spring early summer. I'm trying to plan a trip up there to try it this year

There’s an increasingly larger and larger percentage of striped bass spawning in Canada (St. John area) and I’ve heard the theory that over the last decade the stripers being forced to spawn further north had made stops in other river systems between the Hudson and Canadian waters and successfully spawned in some of them. I can confirm the theory from having caught fingerling to palm sized stripers while shad fishing in CT and RI early in the season. I think it’s safe to say that can only be explained by a current spawn happening in close by river systems.

Smaller jerkbaits like that X-Rap really do the job for holdovers and early spring stripers in RI and neighboring CT. They love to hit on the pause while the jerkbait is drifting or slowly sinking.

Stripers are spawning in the CT River as well as the Housatonic. Wouldnt shock me if they started spawning in RI.

Also they now have more predators after them when their juveniles. 3 invasive species have been hammering baby bass for a while. Blue catfish, flathead catfish and snakeheads all deplete the young of the year. Plus way more guys fishing today than just 5 years ago. Just go to any known fishing spot and the crowds have tripled and most don't even know the plight of the bass or even care.

I live down in Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay and know the report you were talking about. I won't go into all the politics that are going on down here but I do wonder if there is actually a rise in the average water temperatures if the fish that used to stay in the Chesapeake will move and stay further north.
@ChrisMcIntee

Even if the Bay has warmed slightly over the decades, the fish are still programmed to return to the same waters they were hatched, the adult fish are certainly there and spawning, we are just not getting the returns of juveniles we should be getting, Just have to hope its a cycle of unfavorable climate thats causing the eggs and fry to die, like warmer and dryer weather than usual. We have to hope it corrects itself naturally with temperatures and flows closer to average (which average flows in spring should be pretty high). Hopefully not a bigger issue like pollutants in the water that are killing off the lowest levels of life like algeas and planktons, which would be be killing off the life further up the pyramid, ie juvenille bass. I kind of fear its the latter though, as theres a ton of runoff from development and farming, plus millions of tons of toxic sludge built up above conowingo, combine that with any warmer water than usual and you see dead zones develop, algea blooms... all to say, the Chesapeake isnt in great shape.

all that said, anything is possible, perhaps the fish will realize the chesapeake is no longer hospitable and theyll just stick to the waters of NJ and NY where the bunker arent exploited for industrial profit and where the waters are cooler.

@@ChrisMcIntee agree with you about it most likely being the latter with pollutants, although other political concerns about over fishing and the killing of our bait by Omega in our waters down here are being looked at. In Maryland they shut down fishing for Stripers for a couple of weeks in the warmer months due to the mortality rate of catch and release in the warmer waters which I fully support. We have other fish to target down here especially the invasive like blue cats and the great tasting snakeheads. If you ever come down this way let me know.

@@melvinthiess7629 some people are saying that as well, especially since this winter was great for catch and releasing those huge stripers.

You gotta be careful when fishing that bay almost got stranded out there with my dad , best time to fish it is when during the fall run, plenty of bunker around and you can see strippers hammering them constantly, caught plenty of small schoolies and ended up getting 2 keepers by the bridge in November, white perch are in there too but just got to find them ,big ones too, my best bet was on the other side where it opens up by those nice houses, caught just about all of them on homemade swim baits . Oh that’s not the first time a dolphins gone up there, had one in there years ago.

I personally think bass spawn in most rivers throughout the striper coast, just not in numbers historically noticeable as the hudson or chesapeake. That would explain why there seems to fish everywhere, despite data pointing to horrible spawns in these areas. They also could just move past areas like the Chesapeake with subpar water parameters and opt to spawn in other locations. I feel as though we tend to think of bass as salmon, returning to the same stretch of river they were born in, but that's not the case. There are reports of bass spawning in Maine and Nova Scotia
